This was our second time at Secrets Cozumel. We stayed February 18 – 25 2017. Transfer I followed the advice on this web site and did not book a transfer through Secrets / Amstar who wanted $125 for two round trip. We collected our bags and walked out into the lobby keeping our heads down. Head to the right and the taxi booth is right there. Tell them where you want to go. It was $32.50 for two of us in a Private taxi (mini-bus). We were on our way within minutes. On leaving the hotel we checked out and ordered a taxi at reception. They wait outside the hotel grounds so it arrived quickly. $29.00 for the two of us in the same Private taxi (mini-bus). People EVERYONE always had a smile on their face and wanted to be helpful. Check-in was easy and friendly. All the hostesses at all the restaurants were great and would always try to seat you where you wanted. Waiters would be running around quoting “more mimosa, more mimosa” or “happy vacation” etc… They certainly tried to please. Hey this is Mexico and you cannot expect USA 5 star service here. You are on vacation in Mexico, relax and expect the food or drink to get to you when it does. Rooms We had a regular room. It was fine, nothing too fancy. It was always cleaned well and every day, towels replaced etc… AC worked well and was not too noisy. We were towards the back of the resort and never heard noise from anyone / anything. Pools We liked the pool by the lobby as it is normally quiet. Unfortunately a couple of days a group of 8 or 10 also hung out there. There was a battle for loungers around all the pools and on the beach. People were reserving chairs for their future use and not coming back for ages. Maybe worse when people get up to leave but don’t remove their towels so the next people don’t know if it is really in use or not – come on people, put your dirty laundry away. Other pools looked to be very busy with chairs hard to come by. Food The food was pretty good, but certainly not gourmet but defiantly not bad. We did the buffet several times for breakfast and lunch but never dinner. Selection was not bad, sometimes hard to get service. We never had a problem getting seated at any restaurant. We used the French restaurant the most but did try them all and we were not disappointed. Beach / Ocean Like many have said before – you really need some kind of water shoe either for just walking on the beach or entry to the ocean. Beach was raked clean every day and was well maintained. I snorkeled a bit this time but did not find too much of interest. I do remember I found better spots last time – perhaps I didn’t look hard enough this time. Grounds We were amazed by how well the grounds were kept up and there was always something being worked on, but never seemed to disrupt. From raking the flower beds to trimming the palm trees something was always going on. Sky bar This is the most updated (changed) area in the resort since our last visit. There used to be just a couple of wonky tables and chairs. Now it is a lavish patio scene plus the addition of the sushi restaurant up there. I am not a big sushi fan but I did enjoy a few dishes as an appetizer while watching the sun go down. Boy, is the sunset there fantastic. Diving I did two, 2 tank dives with Scuba Tony, see separate review. They are great and worth looking up. I think #1 on Trip Advisor for a reason. Being at Secrets is a big bonus as it cuts out 20 minute boat ride from the marina.

++ Fantastic restaurants & wait staff! Loved not having to make reservations. ++ Grounds & pools were well maintained. Loved the lazy river feature & swim up bar. ++ Loved the resort dock for private charter pick up. Use Chichi Charters for fishing and/or snorkeling - don't book through the resort. ++ Get an ocean view - you can't hear the waves at night in the cheaper Jr. Suite pool view rooms. ++ Order chips, guacamole, quesadillas from the beach waitress and stay all day. -- Certain areas of the resort had a horrible sewage stench, especially near the lobby. -- We were "upgraded" upon check-in to what we found out later to be a smaller room (WTH?) -- Rooms need some TLC, some maintenance issues. -- Don't pay extra for "Preferred" status. Just ask for an upgrade and tip the check-in staff. We were asked to show our "Preferred" card only once, and used all of the amenities. -- More umbrellas are needed on the beach and at the pools.

My husband and I went on this vacation with the knowledge we were going to do a "resort share" presentation. I will tell you about that shortly. Some of the other comments were that the place is outdated or worn out. This is slightly true. They are working on the property and I can see things being updated. I will say this is not their top tier resort. I think we had a few days of sewage smell but that went away a little bit towards the end of the trip. Something really needs to be done about this smell some sort of deodorizer or septic pellets, I really have no idea. The food is okay but I expect that at all-inclusive resorts. Make sure you bring at least one pair of slacks (men) the Bordeaux food quality is better then the other areas. The house wine was great in all restaurants except for the Italian restaurant GROSS is the only thing that comes to mind. Things to bring with you on any trip from now on is Straws - yes straws- they do not give you straws as this is an item they do away with because straws pollute the ocean. Awesome but something you need to know. We were lucky because we brought our insulated thermos with straws so we were golden. Bring your own inflatable floaty - they have some but they are first come first serve Bring Sunscreen since the cost here is your arm and leg - for real ha ha ha Note on Staff They are all awesome!! We had to say our trip was made perfect by all the employees. I think the over worked , potentially under paid, Entertainment team is PHENOMENAL!! Shout out to Hugo, Sari, and Hot Chocolate, there was newbie Dave..Dani..something like that, all of them did a GREAT JOB of entertaining everyone from 25-80 year old's. I was impressed. I cannot believe they work 6 days a week from 9 am-10 pm and are still so excited to talk with you. How they do it is beyond me. So high praise to them. Night Club Desires - FUN every night and the DJ Alex mixed the music each night and had different songs for each night and by night two knew our favorite songs. All adult age groups enjoyed their time on the floor. Luis the bartender at Desires night club or master of drink preparation was so nice and so fun to talk to. He is a great bartender so if nothing else get out of the heat and hang out there at 10 pm each night. We did two spa treatments and the hydrotherapy circuit was enjoyable. Our massages were okay. After getting out of the hydrotherapy circuit walk carefully as the floor is wet and slippery. Now for the UVClub presentation. We did cut some of the time out but you will be in there for 90 mins minimum. Do not think you are getting out of there sooner. But as explained to us we knew we were going to a presentation and to please honor their time as that is their job. We stayed and we bought in. Mind you we went to other Secrets and other chains and we still enjoyed our time at this resort even with it being the lower end of their typical brand. I stayed at other 4-5 stars and I was disappointed I was not with this Resort. Adday, Miguel and Peter were nice and kind and we were treated very nicely. Notes for you and staff Some how there needs to be maybe more shows to go to or different entertainment? Not sure how they will do that. If you scuba or snorkel then this is your place. Large groups of scuba enthusiast stay here and you will make instant friends with them. We will stay at the Preferred section from now on the rooms are 2 levels of quality above ours but you get premium alcohol and some air conditioned lounge areas.

Fantastic food and drink. However, there was a never ending septic smell around the resort. Especially strong on the back side of the Preferred section. Food was great and booze was good too. We went with another couple and had lots of fun. So many people expect someone else to make their fun. The foam party on St Patrick's day was a lot of fun on our 2nd to last day. Staff were great and wanted you to enjoy yourself. We are considering going back for a short stay in January if there is a deal on rooms.

First the good – the beach, it’s a great beach. The staff are also good overall, with some great and others not interested at all. Everything else is varying shades of OK, not so good, or bad. We stayed in the Preferred area, which is only good if you‘re there to smoke, drink, and listen to loud bad music on someone else’s boom-box. That’s a pretty accurate description of the pool in the preferred area. We wound up using other pools in the complex, which were much more laid back. The rooms in the preferred section are not much better than in other sections, at least ours wasn’t. We paid for the most expensive ocean front suite in the preferred section, and the interior was tired and breaking down. The shower drain had been attempted to be fixed by breaking floor tiles around it, and it still backed up every time it was used. The wall between the shower and the commode leaked, and so the water from the clogged drain ran under the wall into the commode area. Some of the electrical outlets and lights in the bedroom didn’t work, and the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine right over the bed. It cooled OK though. The food in the restaurants was mixed, with the two best ones being the Bordeaux (best by far) and the Patio next door at Sunscapes. Service at the restaurants was hit and miss, with those two places again coming in at 1st and 2nd. The service at The Market Café was OK, the service at Windows was not.
