Reviews for Dreams Dominicus La Romana

Started well, but ended very badly due to poor guest service and beach security issues

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 16 hours ago

Our stay at Secrets La Romana Resort & Spa started positively. We were first given a spacious room with a nice view, but from the first night we noticed it was extremely noisy. We could hear everything from the room next door and had to sleep with earplugs. We requested a room change, and the new room was clearly worse: poorer layout, no pleasant view, noise from the neighboring family hotel, and even a bathroom leak. When we complained, one staff member basically told us the first room had been an upgrade due to availability and that the new room was what we were supposed to have. Nobody had explained that at check-in or warned us that changing rooms because of the noise would mean a downgrade. The situation was handled with little empathy, although a manager, I believe named Luz, eventually helped us move to a better room. The most serious issue happened on our last day. We went to the beach around 6:30 a.m. and were actively using chairs under a palapa. Around 8:00 a.m., we left the palapa temporarily for about 20 minutes to go to the room and get coffee. When we came back, all our belongings were gone. Other guests told us hotel security had taken them to the concierge. They also told the security staff that we had been there since around 6:30 a.m., but the guards dismissed that information and took our belongings anyway. We understand the hotel wants to prevent people from reserving chairs for hours, but that was not our case. We had been using the chairs since early morning and only stepped away briefly. Guests should be able to go to the bathroom, get coffee, or swim without their personal belongings being removed. This happened to other guests too, including some girls who were actually swimming in the sea; if one of them had not rushed out, security would have taken their belongings as well. What made it worse was the staff’s attitude. Instead of apologizing or investigating properly, they blamed us for “reserving” the chairs and refused to clearly identify the security staff involved. This felt very inappropriate and unsafe for a resort of this category. There were some positive aspects, including some restaurants and helpful staff members, but these incidents completely ruined our overall impression. For a resort marketed as adults only and high-end, we expected much better service, communication, and respect for guests’ personal belongings. I would not recommend this hotel if you are looking for a truly relaxing adults-only experience.

We had a great experience at Secrets La Romana. The infinity pool is right by the beach and the entertainment are great at getting everyone involved each day. Miguel did lots of activities like water boxing and pool yoga and was friendly and encouraging. The Secrets restaurants and great, Chinola, Noor and Sakura (the dreams ones are good especially the Coastal grill but the Secrets are better). Can’t fault location, room or service. the pool staff/waiters are so attentive and the entertainment team particularly Miguel are fab. The coffee bar is also great!

Amazing experience! Stafe was excellent and the chose for food and drink was very good with over 7 restaurants for dinner and bars open form 10 am and the pool open b from 8 so the relaxing can start early. The decor was very nice and atmosphere was amazing with just the birds in the trees making noice when walking to pool or dinner as well small speaker playing relaxing music.

Good and not so good

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We have just returned from an amazing 3weeks holiday. The resort is beautiful, most staff are so friendly and go out of there way to help and constantly smiling but a few are so miserable and look like they don't want to be there. The grounds are kept immaculate but the beach area need lots of attention. Each day there was rubbish on the beach under the loungers and the same rubbish was there daily, this eventually stopped us using the beach. The staff at the buffet caboa were amazing, don't have there names, but always smiling at breakfast time. Food was always good, we did not have a bad meal but costal grill stood out for us as you could add sides to your meals which other restaurants done have and should be considered as sometimes all you want is a little potato or vegetables to go with your meat. Service was always good, the prefered pool drink service was excellent but tended to stop at around 3pm which was disappointing, yes you can go to the bar but they focused on pool side so it was hard to get a drink without going in the pool. Also service at costal grill is hit and miss, so was excellent, especially Eric, that man needs a medal, he was so good, very attentative, some of the other servers need to follow what he does as some were down right rude. Our last meal was an utter shambles as we had ordered 3 courses which all arrived, after an hour, at the same time, final straw was when the main arrived and I asked for it to be taken back as we still had starter and soup to eat,not acceptable. All other restaurants service was good. Food at both of the beach grills was nice and a change instead of going to a restaurant. Rooms were cleaned daily and kept spotless and turn down with fresh towels at evenings. We stayed prefered, im not sure I would pay the extra money again, as for me, I didn't think the extras were worth the cost, like having Heineken, I could do without it or having the prefered lounge, we hardly used it as it was too cold and no atmosphere at all. The prefered pool was an advantage but the prefered beaches are in the worst areas of the beach and need to be reconsidered and moved to areas where there is direct access to the ocean and far too much shade. We hardly used costal grill or mare for breakfast or lunch as there were too many other options and the coffee shop was nice to grab a sandwich and fruit for lunch. I feel prefered should mean exactly that and that you should be looked after like a king, in some areas this happened and in others it didn't. The towel man at prefered does an amazing job, didn't get his name, but he was always there early putting towels out, moving umberellas for people and keeping the pool area spotless and he always had a smile, he deserves a bonus. Overall I would return without a doubt but would I pay for prevered, if changes were made, yes, if not, no and that is the only reason I have given a review of 4. It has to be the best resort I have stayed at for food quality and hygiene The waterpark was so much fun and far superior towels and longers.
