Tough to Recommend

An absolutely beautiful setting that was clouded with outdated facilities and terrible service. Very difficult to recommend.

Not worth the trip.

Room service took over 1.5 hours if it even came! It took forever to get a table when we tried to go out to dinner. Food serve ran as long as 3 hours. Restaurants posted said they were open but they were closed. The bars in the morning were not stocked with rum or beer. We also had cockroaches in our room.

Not what it used to be...

It breaks my heart to write this review but I felt that I must to share this with others who are considering staying here. I have stayed at multiple Secrets over the years (Maroma Beach, SilverSands, Royal Beach, Cap Cana, Los Cabos, and both Jamaica ones - St. James and Wild Orchid) and it has become my preferred chain to go to. I haven't been on a vacation since Covid so wanted to go somewhere where I knew I would have a great time. I've stayed at both Wild Orchid and St. James previously (in 2015 and 2017) and had great experiences previously so I thought this would be a safe bet but was very disappointed. First, the prices went up which was shocking especially since it was off season but after talking to my travel agent and understanding how the industry is still recovering from the pandemic, I accepted the prices since other resorts and locations were even more expensive. I don't mind paying higher prices as long as I get the value for what I paid for. Where to start? First, I booked a preferred club room because I usually do given the perks that come with it and I was shocked and disappointed to see that the extra price that I paid for a preferred club really had no benefits. In the past, Secrets used to enforce where regular versus preferred club members could go but there was absolutely no enforcement of this at all. Regular guests were in our lounge and at our preferred club beach (not to member that Breathless guests also were in preferred club at Secrets). The quality of the food and beverages in the preferred club lounge have degraded significantly which was very disappointing. Long story short, the extra price of the preferred club was not worth it. Second, the quality of the food and drinks have dropped. One of the things that I really liked about Secrets is that I always count on good food and high end alcohol but that wasn't fully present on this visit. There was only one good restaurant, Bordeaux, and all of the others were below average. The other extremely disappointing thing is that one restaurant (Seaside Grill) was closed due to construction and given one less option, you would think all others would be open and that was not true. Oceana (seafood) was ONLY open for lunch, never for dinner and all of the other restaurants were not open 7 days a week so you need to plan out where to eat if you want to try all of the restaurants. Secrets used to offer high alcohol everywhere but now Sky Vodka is their high end at most bars (you can find Grey Goose in the preferred club lounge only). The preferred club room was extremely outdated. You could tell it needed a massive remodel. My room didn't have a soap dish and about 1/3 of the floor panels had gaps in it. The secret box (where the food dishes and room service is delivered) smelled awful. My other friend who stayed in a standard room had a nicer room than mine in preferred club (their room didn't seem so run down). The entire resorts needs a massive upgrade. The Spa was probably the best part of the vacation. The staff at the spa center were all extremely friendly and I enjoyed my experience there. The spa center does need an upgrade though. You can tell it is falling apart. The wood flooring is rotting and in certain places where you step, the wood literally bends and it is waiting to break. The second steam room was not being utilized and two showers were not working. The last major difference that I noticed is the general happiness of the staff. One of the reasons why I decided to go back to Jamaica is that my last two experiences were very memorable due to the people. The people were friendly and created a great experience previously. This time around, it felt like half of the staff hated their jobs and didn't want to be there. They just weren't as friendly as what I remembered from my last two trips. I am not sure why this experience was so terrible comparable to my previous two visits (granted my last visit was a long time ago). I did hear some rambling that this Secrets has been going downhill since Hyatt took over so I am not sure if all of this is just due to Hyatt taking over and doing whatever they want (i.e. trying to lower costs everywhere (labor, food, beverage, maintenance , etc.) and just focus on profits or not, but it feels like the customer is not at the center at this particular Secrets location anymore. I am torn on whether or not to book another vacation at a Secrets resorts after this experience. I used to love Secrets and recommended it to everyone but can't say that I will do that after this trip.

We stayed in the Wild Orchid Preferred Club for 8 night while celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. The resort, pools and beach were gorgeous plus the entertainment was so fun! The staff was very friendly, responsive and accommodating. I wish I had made mental note of each staff member's name who made our stay amazing but special shout out to KerriAnn for treating us like old friends and making the best drinks 💗, Kenton for going the extra mile for us by setting up a special spot on the beach for our anniversary, Roger for helping us hold sea urchins & teaching us how to coexist with the moon jellies while snorkeling and finally the Matthew who helped us with our luggage and gave helpful reminders when we checked out. His positive attitude helped saying goodbye feel not quite so sad. 😊 PS, if you are considering Preferred Club, do it. All the perks are worth it and you don't want to miss out on Breathless!

First love Jamaica and beautiful water, weather. Check in and check out where nightmare. Arrived at 1:30pm was allowed to check in, just had to wait to get room at 3 pm. Front desk said just come back at 3 will have room ready. Checked back on room not ready, said come back in 15 minutes, come back still not ready, so we play this game until 4pm. I see 3 other guest that have came in after us and all get room. So I ask again every time they say something different. Finally I put foot down and ask for a exact time, Finally in room at 430pm with a dirty bedspread makeup on it. Ask to have clean bedspread, get it next day. Servers where nice, hostess friendly. Front desk and bartender where not happy and didn't smile. We had the miss fortune of having cruise ship guests purchase day passes to eat ,swim and drink at the bar for 150.00 piece so we got to wait to get served at swim up bar 30 minutes at time, ran out of beer took over hour to change 1 keg(pony keg) ran completely out of beer on Sunday at 230pm, how can that happen when resort is at 50% if lucky. Food even at made to order restaurants was over cooked fish and chicken. Breakfast buffet lits of empty dishes never getting refilled, not the quality you would expect from Secrets. I don't go out of the country to eat burgers, pizza and fried chicken I can get that at home. I would have expected great fish, shrimp taco, Resort needs up grade and more than one unhappy bartender. We always tip with each round and all meals. We never got showed property lay out We will return to Jamaica again next year but not Secrets.
