Remota in Patagonia, Chile

Architect Germán del Sol took inspiration from the daily life of Patagonia and based the design of Remota on the buildings in which the sheep farm workers live. To minimize its footprint, Remota uses sustainable practices, locally sourced materials and available resources – light from the continuous vertical windowpanes provides both visibility and warmth, and also contributes to the design scheme. In support of the local community, Remota aims to train and employ only local people.

Arise in a sparse, light-filled room and breathe in the vast magnificence of Patagonia from your window. Fuel up with homemade baked goods before setting out on the day's adventure. Take advantage of being at the crossroads of Patagonia and hike unmarked trails through the peaks of Torres del Paine National Park to picnic alongside ice formations or trek through the wild horse habitats of the Sierra Baguales and hunt for fossils. Debrief at the Remota bar before a meal of Chilean flavors and organic ingredients. Enjoy a candle-lit massage and a dip in the outdoor whirlpool before a rest well earned.

This stunning lodge is located about 20 minutes' walk out of town. It has fabulous views and its design is amazing. We were supposed to be staying elsewhere but were relocated when the other hotel had burst water pipe issues. We loved the communal areas - there is a huge TV room and sitting rooms which were deserted as very few people were in residence. The staff were very friendly and helpful EXCEPT no one told us that the clocks had not changed, unlike the rest of Chile. This meant we were running late on the morning we had an excursion booked. The bar staff, especially Miguel, were terrific as were the restaurant staff. We had a mixed dining experience - our first night we chose the seafood chowder which was fab. The second night we each had a meat dish - my veal was not very warm and my husband reckoned the beef stew was tough. However, the cheese platter was incredible. We would definitely return.

I must highlight the Remota Patagonia Lodge with its vast views of Fiordo Ultima Esperanza -Last Hope fjord. An award winning hotel for its sustainable architecture that make you feel in the right place with their great staff. Excellent guides and excursions inside and outside the park. Food is just great and I love when waitress remembers what you drink!

We stayed here for three nights coming from El Calafate by bus, which is the only way to combine the two places. The bus ride however was better than we thought. The Remota is beautiful and the landscape is breathtaking. Staff is extremely friendly and very helpful. The food in the restaurant was great and the waiters and barkeepers also did a wonderful job. At breakfast one of the waiters even wrapped our sandwich to go and gave us some coffee for our trip. I wish all hotels were like this! We had a wonderful time and fell in love with Chile!

We wish we had known that this hotel is an hour and half from the entrance to the TDP park. We have young kids (11, 8, 5). We chose age appropriate daily activities, but the 3 hour round trip to/from the park was more than we bargained for. The actual hotel is quirky but excellent. The food is amazing. It's all buffet style and incredible. The food they prepare on the day trips is also mind blowing. Very impressive spreads at every meal. The pool/spa area isn't anything special but the pool is nice and warm. The massage rooms are right off the pool, so if there are a lot of kids in the pool, it's not a quiet massage. The rooms are modern, simple, extremely clean, and comfortable. I don't think they have connecting rooms, and we had 2 adjacent rooms. They have actual room keys (instead of key cards). The common lounge areas are lovely and they all have amazing views. The staff is very gracious and will bend over backwards to meet your every need.

Definitely a remote, spectacular and singular place to visit. The architecture is unique, modern, dared. The service is not Virtuoso at all, it lacks detailed attention overall (the shop is always closed, and if you need something from town they would not bring it). Food is good, spa is average. Good wine list.
