We have traveled to Playa del Carmen for over a decade. Tres Rios by far has provided the worst experience of all of our stays. The reception staff was rude as well as slow and inefficient. Check in took over an hour and we were the 1st in line! We had booked directly with the hotel and 1. They could not find our reservations and told us no rooms were available. 2. After showing them a copy of our reservations AND an email from the hotel confirming those reservations, dated just two days prior to our arrival, they "found" our reservations. BUT, we owed more money! Again, showed printed receipt that we were paid in full. By this time a line was forming behind us and Jorge, the manager???, is telling his staff to get rid of us, so we are finally given a room key card & pointed toward our rooms. No porter to take our bags, no map of the resort, no information on restaurants, just go. We find our rooms, they are standard rooms when we had booked and paid for two bedroom suites. And, of the three rooms our party was shown to, only one appeared clean. The other two had dirty dishes on the dresser, towels on the floor and unmade beds. Back to reception. More arguments about our reservations. We demanded that they call Sunset Resorts and get the problem straightened out. We arrived at the resort at 4 p.m. We finally got the rooms/suites we paid for after 7 p.m.! Had we been smart, we would have left before we got our rooms! The buffet is very limited and definitely the smallest we've seen. Very slow in replenishing selections when they run out. The ala carte restaurants are average and have small menus. Quality of food was okay. There is no beach. Where ever they took the pictures of the beach they show on the website, it wasn't here. What "beach" there is is eroded and full of rotting seaweed. Smells so bad you can't stand it. For both pools, there is one small restroom facility located behind the grill. Be prepared to hike back to your room or the lobby if you need to use the toilet. There is one small bar (usually with only one bartender) for both pools. They do have bars at the two restaurants, the grill & pizza place, at the adult pool, but the host or hostess at each of these restaurants will direct you away and steer you back to the pool bar or the lobby unless you are going to eat at the restaurant. Do not recommend the hamburger or hot dog served at the pool. Two words to describe these items, "mystery meat"! Housekeeping does not come every day nor do you get clean towels daily. Ants seem to be a problem. This is most likely because the staff doesn't clean daily and the rooms are a good food source. We were approached daily by persons wanting us to sit in a presentation to buy a membership. This got to be very annoying. One member of our party was bit by a raccoon when she went to deposit trash in the trash can by the pool at night. Turns out that racoons scavage in these containers on a nightly basis as they are not emptied regularly. Overall, the resort is just poorly managed. From check in to housekeeping to food service. No oversight on quality or efficiency. As I said at the start, there are many choices for resorts across a wide range of cost and size in this area that give better service and quality than this resort. Choose someplace else!

My wife and I spent five days at this hotel and it simply wasn't enough time. If you are looking for a place to have a nice, quiet and relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle. this it the perfect place. Coupled with the scenic nature setting, it is a nature lover's dream. The staff was always very polite and helpful and the food was delicious. The rooms are well laid out and spacious. There are a lot of adventurous activities available for both young and old. I would definitely recommend Hacienda for a unique vacation experience. Melissa & Aaron.

I would have given 5 stars if I was just rating the great service provided by a few of the staff members. Alejandro gave a fantastic Segway tour and is so knowledgeable about the resort and the history. Oscar and Armando provided great tours kayaking and snorkeling down the beautiful cenote and river. We spent a wonderful morning at the spa with Rosie and Josephina which allowed us to relax and enjoy the services they provided. Enrique was so diligent and made sure that all our needs were taken care of. Lastly, Miguel in the Italian restaurant (he also was at the grill before they closed it for the week) remembered every detail and brought us our drinks knowing exactly what we wanted. We have been down to this resort a few times, but never during slow season. There was a lot of remodeling going on and miscommunication between the staff and what events were going on each day. The food in the buffet was okay, they could use more variety and a few more staff members. We will go down again as the AMAZING service can outweigh some of the bad.

We had the best time. The staff took such good care of us, we wanted for nothing. We loved all the staff by the pool. Leonard made sure we always had drink at all times. The entertainment was none stop so much fun. Never a dull moment. Those who wanted to relax at the pool could and those of us who wanted to go on adventures did. Floating down river, kayak, bikes, segway, volleyball, soccer, and so much food!

I'll elaborate more later I just needed to warn people while I'm here. Don't come here if you want to relax. It's LOUD everywhere you go, there's music blasting that can be heard both in the pools and stinky beach side. Service is weak. A few diamonds in the rough people that are awesome, but the exception. Save your money.
