Just returned from The Royal Playa Del Carmen. Couple things from the start that was too good to be true. As soon as we arrived our room was ready, it was 11:30 am, so we had no expectation that our room was ready, but it was. Check-in was the smoothest of any hotel I’ve been to. They have designated stations in front desk area to register and welcome you. We were greeted with open arms, a smile, wet towel, and Champaign. Though after a day of travel, the location of the bathroom was first in order. Ok, too much info. Right after check-in, we had lunch, then spent rest of day poolside. Things to really like about this hotel………. 1. WI-FI: Best Wi-Fi experience of any hotel I’ve been to in Mexico. It worked great in the lobby; pool area, and in our rooms. 2. Gym: I appreciate the gym had a Life Fitness elliptical machine to work-out on. 3. Housekeeping: Did a great job maintaining the cleanliness of our rooms, and keeping us stocked with towels and drinks. Also, a nice surprise by dressing up our bed with lettering, wishing my wife a happy birthday, and dropping off a small birthday cake, with Champaign. 4. Internet Access Station: They do have a separate room with computers. so, if you need to print your boarding passes 24 hours prior to departure, this is where you go. 5. Swimming Pools: Basically 3 pools, a. The quiet pool. It’s small pool area. You need a library card to sit and swim there. So it seems. This pool is by the Coffee House and the Mediterranean restaurant. b. Beachfront Pool: Where they play water volleyball and have the swim up bar. c. Olympic size Pool: Where most people hang-out and relax in the in-pool lounge chairs, cabana’s, and where entertainment activities take place, such as water aerobics, Zumba, and bingo. 6. Food: a. My favorite restaurant was Maria Marie’s. Loved their lamb chops b. Most days had breakfast and lunch at the Spice Restaurant. Best French toast at an all-inclusive I’ve had. They made it to order so you got it fresh. They could also make pancakes and crepes to order. c. Other restaurants certainly worth mentioning. Really enjoyed food at the Asiana and their Italian restaurant Pescatore’s, which is across the street from “The Royal”. d. Both Maria Marie’s and Pescatore’s requires reservations. 7. 5th Avenue: You’re only a block from 5th avenue. Think of it as an all-in-one shopping district and flea market. So, if you like to shop, you’re in heaven. And as you stroll along the street don’t be surprised if an amigo comes up and tells you they remember you from the hotel. They easily identify you from your hotel wristband. Just play along and have fun with it. 8. Beach Area: Very scenic and picturesque, let the paparazzi in you come out. If you like parasailing your just walking distance from signing up. During our stay, red flags were posted along the beach, meaning tides and currents were dangerous to swim in, we settled for walks along the beach. 9. Relaxation: We stayed at “The Royal” from May 6th – May 13th. The weather was perfect. ……………………As described and sung by the Zach Brown Band …………………….. I got my toes in the water, butt in the sand Not a worry in the world, a cold beer in my hand Life is good today, life is good today 10. DRINKS: For me, it was all about 3 types of drinks. Cervezas, Margaritas, and Mango Daiquiris. Them Mango Daiquiris were really good. Things I felt could be better…. 1. This is going to sound crazy, even loco’, but I could never find fresh tortilla chips at the resort. 2. The honeydew and cantaloupe were not sweet. Can’t blame resort. Can’t find sweet fruit back home. Finally; I would just say there are not many hotels I would consider visiting a second time, but “The Royal” Playa Del Carmen would be the exception.

We arrived for our yearly visit back home to The Royal and as usual we were treated like family. We were checked in quickly and efficiently in the Real Club area by by Yali and Alex helped me with making some reservations and with some arrangements for our friends who would be joining us in a few days. I had been in contact with Willemina before our trip regarding a few details and she had arranged everything perfectly. Marco Obbens arranged a special anniversary celebration treat to be delivered to our suite one day. I had barely mentioned during a previous conversation that we were celebrating our 30th anniversary this year and our friends at The Royal made it special! At Pelicanos we were always greeted by Chef Rudi who prepared many special dishes for us. The staff Manuel, Lucas, Rodolfo, Geronimo, Felipe, Martin, Edgar, Fernando, Arlaya, Eleno, Geovany all worked as a team to make sure we have whatever we need or want before we even know we need or want it! We love our dinners at Maria Marie. The lamb chops are so good! Our waiters Jesus Sanchez and Jorge Aguilar took the best care of us. Spice Restaurant was great for lunch or a quick dessert. Javier Pool always had a special place set just for us and had our white wine waiting. He along with his coworkers Edith, Osiris, Israel, Adan, Rey, Francis, Antonio, Jose Garcia and Laura were always so happy and fun to dine with. Asiana is a great place for lunch and dinner. Manuel is one of our favorite waiters at the resort and we were so happy to find him at Asiana! Jessinia's smiling greeting and getting to visit with Manuel made us return several times during our trip. Chef's Plate is a great experience for dinner. We chose to eat there on 2 different nights based on the menus. Head waiter-Jesus Rosales, Chef-Ruben, Host-Jose Luis. Our waiter was Felix both nights. He along with his fellow waiters Omar, Michel, Pedro, and Jorge all made our dinners there nights to remember. I am going to spend this year trying to make a copycat recipe for that asparagus soup! El Mediterraneo has a well kept secret - their steak! Truly one of the best steaks ever! We got to see Matt at the bar in the lobby again. He has been a friend over the years and he makes a great lemon drop martini. Maria Pech kept our suite spotless during our stay. We spent our days around the main pool. Raul at Tradewinds Bar took care of us every day and knew what I was going to have to drink before I even got to the bar. Mauro was at the Lobby Bar and the swim up bar during the time we were there. He is so fun and loves to dance. The sports and entertainment staff of the resort are so special to us. We have known Victor for many years and he always makes us feel like we are truly at home. It was great to see Israel again and then we got to meet and get to know the great new crew. Jazmin, Sergio, Daniel and sweet girl Carla. They are all great additions to the resort and we hope to see them for many more years to come. We love The Royal Playa del Carmen. We have been at least 12 times, honestly I have lost count! We will continue to go back because of the staff, the outstanding service and the overall 5 star resort.

I gave this one a rating of three, but I would say 3.5 if I could. We have stayed at all-inclusive resorts (and also not all-inclusive) for years throughout the Caribbean & Mexico and stayed in many places beyond this area, so we are pretty seasoned travelers (aka old) and maybe a bit more cynical too. Listed below are the pros and cons in my opinion. I feel that any two people can have fairly different experiences, so take it all with a grain of salt and maybe a little tequila! Pros: Housekeeping was spectacular. Room was cleaned and turned down without fail. Extra pillows, towels, soap were always available. Top notch service! Landscaping was immaculate. I literally did not see a plant out of place or even a bug the whole time. A couple of ants and that was it. This feat was amazing considering where we were. Fitness center was brand new, tons of good equipment and looked to be in wonderful condition. I have to be honest, we never made the time to work out, but it sure looked good. Spa was nice and message from Enrique was very good. The attendant at the spa was a little too concerned with the sequence of how you used the services and hovered a bit too much for my liking, but it was pretty and quiet. Location was excellent as described. Plan to be harassed by all the guys with their lines as you walk down the street. Many claim to be waiters from the restaurant from the night before. Don't buy this line and ignore them all. Prices are high. Things have changed in these parts and most feel the need to gouge the prices. I bought a few things anyway from the vendors that seemed to be the most honest. Coffee shop was wonderful with Edison (sp?) as the barista. He was helpful and sweet and we really enjoyed his service. Lobby Bar service was good with very entertaining bartenders. Always a good place to socialize too. The drinks here seemed stronger than the ones by the pool. Food at Marie Maria was good. The flank steak was tasty as well as the lamb chops. We enjoyed pretty much everything we ate there on three nights. I will get to the service in the next section. Lunchtime tacos at Rincon Mexicano were good since we could add our own toppings. Watch out for the hot habanero sauce. It was really, really hot, but we loved it! Most could not, if you are not used to it, be careful! Pool was nice enough with pretty good drink service. Drinks were most definitely watered down. I guess this saves money for management, but disappointing. We did enjoy many conversations by the pool with interesting guests. That made the pool time a lot of fun. I do wish it was more beachfront with a negative edge pool would be nice. Hard to find a chair even to put bag on due to all the usual phantom chair hogs, but we managed. Cons: Inconsistent service, or overbearing service in some cases. For example, in Marie Maria we were asked our room number six times. We were dressed appropriately (many were not), wearing our bracelets and the last time I checked this was an all-inclusive restaurant. Why did they ask so many times? It would have been amusing if not so persistently annoying. Before our food was finished they wanted to pull the plate. The place was not overly busy. I also noticed not one female server to be found in the dinner restaurants, and only a few at breakfast. The only female to be found was a snarly hostess who seemed more interested in answering the phone than serving the people right in front of them. This employment prejudice seems to just be the way it is in this part of the world, but still not good to see. Check-in was much longer than it needed to be and our "concierge" had no desire to describe our room when asked. Sure enough he wanted to put us in a room on the street. We paid handsomely (near $300) to upgrade to a garden view room. Other guests we spoke to got an upgrade for nothing extra. I felt cheated the whole time due to this experience. We were tired and I just worried my spouse would not be able to sleep, and even after attempting to bargain paid the extra for this minor upgrade. Hopefully this was just a greedy concierge and not the norm. Beach-it has been described as seaweed covered and open to the public. This is no lie. It was not a good area to enjoy any beach time. I love the beach and this one was not good at all. Crowded, uncomfortable, not pretty. I have been to this area before and have learned this time that off the beaten path is definitely better. Being close to town is great, but if you really just want great beach, this is not the place for it. Asiana was not great. We thought is was fairly tasteless for the cooked meal and the soy sauce for the cold items was a light brown color without much taste-just odd. We did not like this one, but talked to others that did. We have had some darn good sushi, so we might be jaded on this one. All in all, we enjoyed our trip and this resort is very fun. Lots of activities and things to keep you entertained. Go, have a tequila and have a great time!

I stayed at The Royal for 7 nights. Positive points: The resort is really well clean, bedrooms, bath and common areas. The decor is beautiful and cozy. Amazing gardens. The staff is unbelievable kind and thoughtful, special thanks for Vicenta (waitress at the pool) One (waitress at the tequila bar) and both hostesses at the Pelican's restaurant and Spice (if I recall right Fernanda and Maria). They all speak English I am from Brazil and it was really easy to communicated with the staff. The bedroom is big and has a jacuzzi for two. Great king size bed and a lot of pillows. It was amazing how silent the room was even closed to the pool (my room was the 140) thick doors of the room and balcony. My favorites restaurants were: Marie Maria, Asiana and Il Pescatore (restaurant of the sister resort across the street). Food is not fantastic but for a resort this big, it actually has great presentation and taste good enough. Negative points: drinks are water down. Glasses in the pool not well clean (strongly recommend to buy a glass from the hotel shop) most guests do buy it. And one day we got a bit sick not much...don't know if it was the food or dirty glasses or ice. Not allowed to have snacks at the pool area. About the beach: not a private beach like in other resorts but not a problem. In my opinion, the sand and ocean at playacar area and Cancun area is more beautiful for my taste. The sand area is wilder and the ocean with less rocks.
