We just returned from our fourth visit to the The Royal in Playa del Carmen. We stayed May 17th thru the 24th and it was another awesome vacation. Below are a few thoughts we had about our recent visit. Pros: The rooms are large and spacious. The air conditioning kept the room very comfortable and the rain shower in the bathroom was wonderful. The balconies are nice size and perfect for early morning coffee and late afternoon relaxing or reading. One of my favorite places was the Royal Coffee House. You could go there any time of the day after 6am, and choose from a wide selection of coffees, pastries, cookies and sandwiches. The El Mediterraneo was my favorite breakfast spot, although the food there is also excellent for lunch and dinner. Jessena was there to greet & seat us while Jose made sure were had everything we wanted for a great breakfast experience. We loved the Omelet station and took advantage of it each morning. We especially like the Asiana Restaurant. We were fortunate enough to have lunch there one day and dinner twice. Winston was our waiter at both evening meals and Rudy at lunch. Both provided great service and paid close attention to refills, timing and such. More often than not, it was Pelicano’s for lunch. I loved the Washington Corn Cream Soup and Edgar & the chef made sure I got my hot wings & ranch, even when they weren’t on the buffet. You Rock, Edgar!! We did try the Spice and Marie Marie and both had very good food. There are several bars around this resort and all of them have excellent drinks and service. I especially wanted to give a shout out to Raul & and Luis at the Trade Winds Pool bars. Raul spoiled me with fabulous Coco Loco’s and Luis with excellent Bloody Marys. At the Lobby Bar I enjoyed the best Lemon Drop Martini’s I’ve ever had, period! Also, let me give a shout out to my all-time favorite server at the beach & pool, Prude. We have been friends since we started going to the Royal back in 2010. This resort is lucky to have her as an employee. In our opinion, one of the best thing about this resort, is the staff. Everyone is friendly and willing to do whatever it takes to make your trip memorable. Special thanks to Abel at the Front desk for making sure we got the “upgraded” room we paid for. Also, a special thanks to Marco who generously offered to help me get our boarding passes & get checked in with the airlines, when there were computer issues in the Business room. The pools were also very nice. There were plenty of loungers for everyone, however, you have to get out early in the morning to snag a covered lounger or cabana. What keeps us coming back to the Royal is the location. You have the beach out the back door and 5th Avenue with great shopping & food out the front. If you are considering this resort, don’t hesitate, you will not be disappointed. Cons: I don’t remember there being much seaweed on the beach on our prior visits, but this time there was a lot. The staff, however, did an excellent job of raking and burying the seaweed each morning. Despite the seaweed, the ocean was still warm and inviting.

The lady that would do our evening turn down service was beyond accommodating. Her name was Yolanda Lumbrano and she would make towel animals and leave Hershey kisses for us nightly. She was understanding when we had a family emergency and she offered help and that meant a lot to us.

I'll try to sum up our experience in a short paragraph. 10 of us got together to celebrate a 40th plus a honeymoon. Selected the Royal because of their swim up suite, ocean view option which I so recommend. On the first day we met Mari Cocom (our poolside waitress) and completely fell in love even more. She is the hardest working waitress I have ever seen. So knowledgeable about the hotel and had great drink recommendations. 10 people, 10 drink orders in Yeti's mind you and not once did she deliver the wrong drink. Incredible to say the least. Give Mari a week off would ya. The Royal was outstanding and could not have traveled with a better group of people. Looking forward to round two....

My wife and our best friends stayed at The Royal Apr 29-May 4th and we had an exceptional time. Here is my (way too long) review: Check in was fine. We were not greeted with the cold towel and champagne that others have described here, but a gentlemen did run and get us drinks while we waited, which was nice. The lobby is beautiful. The bellmen watched our bags as our room was not ready right away, and we were allowed to begin using the hotel amenities right away. The room is awesome. We were in a swim up suit, which is the the only way to go. The rooms are huge by other resorts' standards. The beds are very comfortable. The 2 persons jacuzzi was also nice to have (although give yourself 20 minutes to fill it because it is enormous). The swim up suite pool is the best part of this resort. It is semi-private, and we spent most of the day in it. You can listen to music, the staff comes by frequently to take drink orders, and you can always call room service if you need anything else. The mini-bar was excellent, and restocked daily. I cannot stress enough how great the swim up suites are!!!! The food was good, not great. Spice is fantastic for breakfast. The omelets are delicious. We enjoyed Maria Marie very much one evening. El Mediterraneo is excellent for dinner, but the lunch is a buffet and not as good. Pelicanos is right on the beach and the food is good (go to the taco bar for lunch). Although this was the only place we had not so good service. Room service is quick and delicious. As I mentioned, we ordered a lot from our pool. The drinks are good, and the liquors are top shelf if you ask for it. We also went to the coffee bar every morning, and the coffee and fruit were fresh and delicious. The grounds are beautiful, and the beach is very nice. I do wish there were more beach cabanas. Most were reserved when we wanted to go, and the sun was incredibly hot when we were there. Couldn't stay on the beach too long without shade. The service was impeccable for the most part, and we had an excellent time. We will definitely consider The Royal for another trip!

Let me start my review with 3 overall statements - First, we stayed at Gran Porto in November of 2016, which is their sister resort right next door and had an EXCELLENT experience - which led us to believe that the Royal, which was more expensive and has the slogan - EXPECT THE EXCEPTIONAL - would be better - we were wrong. Second, I want to be clear that this review is not about the wedding planning. Our wedding planner, Anat, was SPECTACULAR - and our wedding was amazing. This review is purely about the experience at the resort, apart from the wedding. Third, the resort itself is beautiful - the pools, the room, the ground are all very nice - this review is again purely about the experience - focusing on the staff and policies. Day 1 - When we checked in, we informed the staff that we were planning to stay one extra day. As they were unable to make this change ahead of time to our reservation, I had booked another day. They told us that we would need to switch rooms for the last day (note that we stayed 8 days) because we were given an upgrade due to our wedding. This seemed ridiculous to me, and it was only after talking to our wedding coordinator that this was somewhat rectified. Day 2 - We went to have lunch at Pelicano's at 3PM and were told my wife needed a cover for her swimsuit - fair enough. We went back to our room and got the cover and came back to the restaurant and talked to the same guy who we had talked to 20 minutes before who told us they were closed. Note that they close at 4PM, but they chose to do whatever they wanted. You will see the same experience for breakfast in the following days... Day 3 - We tried to have breakfast at Pelicano's. We arrived at 10:15 and were told it was closed. Again, I pointed out the time, and was told we could go to Spice instead. As some of our guests have children, they stayed at Gran Porto as The Royal is Adults Only - no problem. So, we went to go visit the wedding party at Gran Porto. One of the bridesmaids was staying at a nearby resort and we wanted to meet with her. She was given exactly 20 minutes and then watched by a security guard the whole time and really made to feel like an outcast. Day 4 - Another day, another failed attempt to have breakfast at Pelicano's - this time we arrived at 10:10. Our parents and brother were there and we asked if we could join them - we were again told they were closed. We wanted to have dinner with some of our family and friends, but of course - those staying at the Gran Porto were not allowed to have dinner with us at The Royal, so we elected to have dinner at Gran Porto - Maria's. They were very rude about having to accommodate a party of 15 and said we should have arranged this ahead of time - so we made a note that for our rehearsal dinner the next evening we should do so... Day 5 - We went to the concierge at The Royal to make a reservation for dinner at Pelicano's for our rehearsal dinner. They told us they could not make the reservation and we would have to go to the restaurant and make the reservation there. When we went to the restaurant, they told us we would need to go to the concierge... I said no, we were just there and they told us to go here. After about 20 minutes of phone calls between the restaurant and the concierge, a lady came from the concierge office to try to fix things. She told us we could have our dinner at Spice - OK, fine. Then she said, wait, there are people from Gran Porto? Yes. OK, then you will have to go there instead. Great. So, we went to Gran Porto and asked the same thing of their concierge. The only restaurant that could accommodate us was their buffet restaurant - Albatros - at 6PM. Fine. We talked with the manager who reluctantly agreed. We also confirmed that the bridesmaid who was staying at another resort could join - no problem. When we arrived for dinner with our group there was a different manager who was not informed and was very upset about having to accommodate our group. Furthermore, they first asked for $95 and after talking with the hotel manager, went down to $50 to allow our bridesmaid to attend who we had previously been told could attend at no additional cost. Day 6 - Our wedding day. My bride and my mother-in-law had an appointment to get their nails done at 11. My wife arrived about 5 minutes late and was asked to reschedule to the next day! Sorry, but our wedding is today and this needs to be done today. After much back and forth, they reluctantly agreed to squeeze her in. I arrived 10 minutes late with my mother in law and had to go through the same thing. It seems the resort has no problem with not allowing the guests to arrive 15 minutes before something closes, but will not allow any flexibility when it comes to their time - unacceptable. Day 7 - My children stayed at Gran Porto. And my daughter had a friend stay with her the first night, but they charged for 3 nights of double occupancy. She informed them on check in that he would only stay the first night but they still charged for double occupancy for all 3 nights at check out.
