The No Fun Resort!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 14 hours ago

⭐⭐⭐☆☆ Overall: 3/5 My wife (31) and I stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach to celebrate my 34th birthday. The resort itself is beautiful, extremely clean, and very well maintained. The staff was friendly, and the service throughout our stay was excellent. However, while this is a great resort for relaxation, it wasn’t the experience we were looking for. If you’re looking for a peaceful vacation where you can relax by the pool, enjoy good food, and unwind, I think you’ll enjoy this resort. If you’re looking for nightlife, evening entertainment, and a more energetic atmosphere, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. Resort & Preferred Club – ⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5) The property is absolutely beautiful, and the landscaping is well maintained. We booked a Preferred Club King Swim-Out Suite, but I was disappointed with our room assignment. We were placed in Building 16, while the Preferred Lounge, Preferred Beach, and many of the Preferred amenities were located near Buildings 26 and 27. We paid extra for Preferred Club but had to make a fairly long walk every time we wanted to use those amenities. Another major disappointment was the construction. I wasn’t notified that construction would be taking place until several days after I booked the trip. Construction continued until around 10:00 PM each evening. If you’re assigned to Buildings 15 or 16, expect to hear constant banging, drilling, and heavy machinery throughout the day and into the evening. The noise carries into the rooms and definitely takes away from the peaceful atmosphere you’d expect from a luxury resort. Restaurants, Food & Drinks Food – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The food was very good. Every restaurant we were able to try served quality meals, and I enjoyed everything we ordered. Drinks – ⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5) The drinks were disappointing. Most cocktails tasted watered down compared to other all-inclusive resorts I’ve visited. Restaurant Experience & Dress Code – ⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5) One thing I wish had been communicated before arrival was the dress code. I packed vacation clothes—shorts, tank tops, and sleeveless shirts—because that’s what I planned to wear at a beach resort. I didn’t realize sleeveless shirts weren’t permitted at many of the restaurants. I even had to borrow a button-down shirt from the resort just to eat at the buffet. Because of the dress code, I missed out on several restaurants I had planned to visit. I completely understand requiring nicer attire at fine dining restaurants, but I didn’t expect to need a collared shirt just to enjoy tacos or eat at the buffet. Entertainment & Nightlife – ⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5) This was easily the biggest disappointment of our stay. The daytime activities included pool basketball, pool volleyball, yoga, stretching, and a few other organized events. While some guests may enjoy these activities, we were hoping for a wider variety of entertainment. The nightlife was almost nonexistent. The nightclub didn’t open until 10:30 PM and closed at 12:00 AM. There were only a handful of people inside each night, and the music was mostly instrumental or electronic/rave music. Although the DJ accepted requests, the atmosphere never became lively enough to keep people there. Pools, Beach & Evening Atmosphere – ⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5) The main pool closed at 8:00 PM, and even the private swim-out pools were closed at the same time. Considering we paid extra for a swim-out room, it was disappointing not being able to enjoy it in the evening. After dinner, there was very little to do around the resort. Most of the games and activities were put away by around 5:00 PM, leaving the resort extremely quiet at night. During our stay, the beach was also heavily affected by sargassum, with large piles along the shoreline. I understand this is a natural occurrence and outside of the resort’s control, but it did impact our beach experience. Overall – ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5) Secrets Maroma Beach is a beautiful luxury resort with excellent service, clean facilities, comfortable rooms, and good food. However, it caters much more toward travelers looking for peace and relaxation than those looking for entertainment and nightlife. As a couple in our early 30s celebrating a birthday, we felt like we were among the youngest guests at the resort. By around 8:00 PM, the resort became very quiet, and there simply wasn’t much to do after dinner. I wouldn’t call this a bad resort—it’s simply designed for a different type of vacation. If your ideal getaway is relaxing by the pool, enjoying quality service, and having a quiet evening, this is an excellent choice. If you’re planning a birthday celebration or want a resort with an active social scene and nightlife, I’d recommend choosing a different property.

Highly recommend vacation

Beautiful, relaxing, fun vacation. Karen, our concierge took excellent care of us. Alana, the Fit Bodies fitness professional ran great courses that kept me active while on vacation. Frankly the entire Secrets team did a great job of creating that balance between exclusive care and a quiet retreat. Would definitely recommend!

Amazing resort, "Brown Sugar", also known as Angel made our trip! He was engaging, stopped to chat with us daily and out on a great show when asked. Extremely knowledgeable about the resort and would definitely go back... to hopefully see him as a bartender!

Our 2nd Stay Did NOT Disappoint! (Building 27, Room 2721 with Brandon)

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 17 hours ago

Before booking our trip to Secrets Maroma Beach, I spent hours reading recent TripAdvisor reviews, hoping it would live up to the hype once again. This was actually our second time staying here—our first visit was for just 3 days right after our wedding at Dreams Jade, but 3 days was nowhere near enough, so we came back for a full 7-day honeymoon. I can honestly say it surpassed every expectation and did not disappoint! What truly sets Secrets Maroma apart is the unbelievable level of service. We stayed in Building 27, Room 2721, and the entire team in our building made our vacation extraordinary. A massive shout-out goes to our concierge, Brandon. Brandon was an absolute game-changer! He was warm, attentive, and genuinely cared about making sure every single detail of our day was smooth. Beyond Brandon, everyone working in Building 27 deserves major recognition. From the housekeeping team who kept our room absolutely spotless, to the restocking staff who kept our favorites stocked, to the prompt and friendly room service—everyone was fantastic. A few highlights from our 7-day stay: The Drinks: The bartenders here make the absolute best drinks! Some of our personal favorites were the blackberry margaritas, Grand Mimosas in the morning, Mexican Candy shots made with Don Julio, and the Grand Old Fashioned. The Food & Mornings: We loved getting in-room breakfast delivered in the morning to start our day slow, or heading over to the Preferred breakfast at Oceana. The Activities: There is so much fun happening around the property. You have to play the giant basketball Connect Four off the side of the pool! We also loved the silent party, aqua aerobics, and playing oversized chess on the water at night. To cap off the night, heading to Desires Nightclub where they hosted the silent party and karaoke was always a blast! The Gym: The fitness center isn't super fancy, but it has a great variety of cardio and strength equipment to get a solid workout in. A couple of real-talk notes for future travelers: There is currently some construction happening as they work on adding a brand-new premium pool! They’ve put up a nicely painted wall, so you really can't see much, and it honestly doesn't take away from the experience at all. We actually can't wait to come back in the future to check out the new pool and updates once it's finished! As for the beach, we didn't spend a ton of time right on the sand—the staff works their absolute tails off doing their best to keep it clean, but with the seaweed right now, it’s a bit of a losing battle. You can't help nature, and the beach is still beautiful to look at, but we spent most of our time enjoying the incredible pool scene anyway. If you are on the fence about booking Secrets Maroma, just do it. If you get Brandon as your concierge in Building 27, you are in for an unbelievable trip. We are already counting down the days until stay #3!
