⭐ 1 Star — Five Stars on the Sign, One Star in Reality Our recent stay at Secrets Maroma Resort was an unforgettable experience — unfortunately, not for any of the reasons a luxury resort would want. We arrived expecting a five-star resort and left with one overwhelming thought: “How quickly can we get out of here?” Apparently, at Secrets Maroma, “luxury” has been redefined. Let’s start with the public bathrooms. For a resort of this size, finding a public restroom can feel like participating in a scavenger hunt. There appear to be only a few public restroom facilities for the entire property. Perhaps the management believes that making guests desperately search for a bathroom adds an element of adventure to the vacation. Then there is the food. The selection was limited, and much of what we encountered was far below what we would expect from a five-star resort. Apparently, if you want the good food, there is a solution: pay extra for a membership. Otherwise, you can stand nearby and watch other guests enjoy it. Nothing says “luxury all-inclusive vacation” quite like watching someone else eat the food you apparently weren’t important enough to receive. Most of the staff were polite and pleasant, and we genuinely appreciated that. Unfortunately, one server managed to provide a memorable exception. During our previous visit, when bringing coffee to our table at the buffet, he literally slammed/threw the cup onto the table with an attitude. Perhaps this is the resort’s new interpretation of personalized five-star service. Our room was another highlight — if by “highlight” you mean something you would rather not turn the lights on to inspect too closely. It looked tired, dated, and far from fresh. The dark bedding did absolutely nothing to create a feeling of cleanliness or luxury. Instead, it gave the room an unfortunate feeling of “please don’t look too closely.” And then, of course, there is the beach. To be fair, the seaweed is not the resort’s fault. Nature is nature. But here’s the problem: we didn’t pay nature directly — we paid the resort. And what we received was a beautiful Caribbean view that was essentially impossible to enjoy because the beach and water were overwhelmed by seaweed. So congratulations: we paid premium five-star prices for the privilege of looking at the ocean instead of swimming in it. At some point, you have to ask: what exactly are the owners and management counting when they call this a five-star resort? Five stars for the marketing? Five stars for the price? Five stars for convincing guests that this is luxury? Because the actual experience certainly didn’t earn them. The most ironic part is that this property carries the name Secrets, because after staying here, I think I finally understand the secret: how a resort can maintain a five-star reputation while delivering an experience that often feels closer to one star. This was not simply disappointing. It was genuinely unpleasant and frustrating, especially considering the price and expectations associated with the property. I honestly cannot understand why people return here. Perhaps they know a different Secrets Maroma than the one we experienced. For us, the biggest “secret” is why anyone would willingly come back. If this is what Secrets considers five-star luxury, I would strongly recommend keeping your money and your expectations somewhere else.

This is our 16th visit to this location. Every September we return to Secrets Maroma and are always impressed by the staff, grounds and more. We love to see improvements when we visit, sometimes as simple as a fresh coat of paint, other times it's major construction which will benefit the guest in the long-run. The staff and food is great, we love seeing familiar faces and are pleased to know that Secrets Maroma is taking good care of their employees, as they have longevity.

Secrets Maroma is our favorite home away from home! All of the team is exceptional and welcomes you every step of the way. Our beach waiter Alberto absolutely made the trip. This is our third time here and we’ll for sure be back!

We came back after an excellent year in 2025 to find that it was as good in 2026 and will be back in 2027. We had a great experience from the moment we checked in to moving from our first room with help from Angel to our sea view room in block 25. Our concierge, Marcelo was brilliant and to be honest, everyone was fantastic from Domingo in the French Restaurant, to Caroline cooking our omelets to perfection at breakfast. I have recommended Secrets Maroma to many of my clients and will continue to do so.
