Disappointed by the Gap Between Promise and Reality

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

We stayed at this resort for two weeks, drawn by its reputation for “world-class service” and “unlimited luxury.” The glowing reviews convinced us it was worth the considerable cost but sadly, our experience fell well short of those claims. What went well: • The staff were consistently warm, friendly, and hardworking. • The food was excellent, on par with what we’ve enjoyed at Grand Paradiso (now Joia). • Our room was spotless and everything functioned as it should. What let it down: • Construction noise at night: We were warned about ongoing work but assured it wouldn’t impact our stay. It did. • Long restaurant waits: Evening dining involved waits of 25 minutes to over an hour, with no option to pre-book. This felt poorly managed. • Noisy poolside atmosphere: The main pool area was more party scene than peaceful retreat, loud, crowded, and not relaxing. • Limited access to water: By afternoon, loungers were gone, the infinity pool had an unpleasant odour, and sea access was blocked by seaweed. Cooling off became a challenge. • Upselling culture: Despite being all-inclusive, we were frequently asked to pay extra, for bug spray, spa pool access, and more. Even the promised daily coconuts only appeared 3 times in 14 days. • Insect issues: Mosquitoes and sand fleas were a constant nuisance. • Invisible management: While frontline staff did their best, senior management were notably absent. When issues arose, difficult messages were passed down through junior staff rather than addressed directly. There was no sense of accountability or leadership presence to uphold the standards the resort claims to offer. • Value for money: We paid a premium expecting a truly luxurious experience. Given the shortcomings, it felt more like a mid-range resort with a high-end price tag. Maybe this is just a short 3-5 day location, certainly not a 14 day one. If your idea of a great holiday is spending hours at the swim-up bar, enjoying a loud, party centric vibe, and waiting up to an hour for dinner, this might suit you. But if you’re looking for peace, elegance, and seamless service, this resort may disappoint. We won’t be returning. To the hotel: Please don’t respond with a standard “thank you for choosing us” comment. Instead, take this feedback seriously and use it to improve the experience for future guests.

Fantastic employees making Paradise all that it can be!

Hubby and I spent 2 glorious weeks at Secrets Maroma after a 6-year travel hiatus. This was our 9th trip to this resort and we plan to go again in March '26. When you see reviews indicating that the staff is Top Notch and that they do all that they can to make every detail perfect, Believe It! It's truly the perfect combination of Extraordinary staff, a beautiful beach, stylish accommodations, delicious food, tasty cocktails and talented entertainment. The memorable experience begins with the efficient team at the front door who say "Welcome Home" to the speedy check in process with a refreshing cold towel and welcome drink. Your bags arrive quickly while you are enjoying the beautiful view from your balcony. Next you jump into your play clothes and head to the beach (or pool, or lunch, or beach side bar). Each staff member that you encounter will give a smile and a greeting. It's amazing how many address you by name, kudos to the training program. Our building concierge was the super efficient and personable Bramdon! If you need anything during your stay, he is your man! We were fortunate to see many of the same staff from past vacations, who treat you like best friends. Paula made a special trip to see us at the Lobby bar, we remembered her from her first job many years ago and it was so nice to reminisce with her. We also ran into Roger/Rogelo who was our first building concierge back in 2012 and he remembered us and our names. What a gentleman! When we wanted loungers at the pool Manuel, Mauricio and Edy had the perfect spot ready for us in seconds. On our beach days Hugo and Luis were very efficient as well. All 5 of these gentlemen were so courteous and friendly, and we had some great conversations with them as well. We spent most of our days at the beach with the Best of the Best: Eder, Marco and Balbina! What great people that take such good care of you with cold drinks, fresh fruit, big smiles and a fun story or two. When you stop by the Barracuda pool bar, ask for Gonzalo, he's a great kid. Many days breakfast was something tasty from Coco Cafe where Isamar greeted us with a smile and addressed us by name. What a kind soul, beautiful inside and out. We also had a few late night snacks at Coco where Andres was always ready with a big smile and a fun story. If you hit the World Cafe for breakfast look for Freddy, what a sweetheart! Also Francesca is creating delicious Mexican Cravings for you at the entrance. Several days we enjoyed lunch with a freshly prepared and delicious pizza from pizzaiolo extraordinaire Luis at the outdoor oven. We enjoyed the Seaside 'temporary' lunch experience a few times as well. Service was very efficient and the food choices were plentiful and delicious. Don't miss the Tuna Snoring show and tasting on Thursdays at Noon, what a treat! My personal favorite dinner restaurant is Bordeaux where we enjoyed delicious duck, filet, soup and appetizers. The salad with figs was really great. If you plan ahead, ask for Domingo to be your waiter, he is fantastic. We also had a great experience with Sergio. The Asian menu choices at Himitsu are plentiful and the food is very good. Both Darwin and Francisco took great care of us during our multiple dinners there. We were so fortunate to enjoy the culinary mastery of Chef Juan M. to include grilled octopus, shrimp, salmon and nopales/prickly pear and the freshest guacamole ever; along with special order Chiles en Nogada at the El Patio restaurant, thanks to mgr. Veronica! We also enjoyed a wonderful dinner prepared by chef Armando at El Patio. Ask for Miguel or Pablo, they will make your evening memorable. Pre and post dinner cocktails were poured expertly by a fantastic team at the lobby bar. The place would get very busy, but the team works well together to get your order to you quickly. Thanks Arturo, Eduardo, Roger, Adrian, Rogelo, Jesica and Clary. Service with a smile! We also had a great conversation with F&B concierge Jessica T. who was a real gem. The Rock Show is as good as we remembered it. Boogie Nights was very fun. The Love/candle show in the lobby was beautiful and the other lobby musical acts were very good as well. We witnessed some some interactions between managers Monica and Johanna with their respective teams and it was so nice to see the mutual respect expressed (in both directions). Very refreshing! While it may seem like I have named every employee, I haven't--as each space is very well staffed. I've mentioned those that made a real impression on us. Take cash with you to tip these fine folks, they work VERY hard and need those tips to feed their families. Can't wait to return to our Home away from Home. My only constructive criticism relates to the evening service at the World Cafe (Seaside, Oceana and La Terraza). I don't understand why you can't order from the Mediterranean menu AND sit inside or why one person in your party can't order from the Oceana menu while the other orders from Seaside while sitting at the same table. Probably a kitchen logistics issue, but it was a dissatisfier for me. Lastly, if you visit in September/October TAKE PLENTY OF MOSQUITO REPELLANT! And of course, ample sunscreen. Bueno Dias!

Beautiful Property with Top-Notch Service

We just returned from a week at Maroma Beach. The property is beautiful with so many activities offered without ever having to leave the resort. The service was spectacular from everyone, but we were especially spoiled by Alonso, Bldg 24 Concierge.

Fantastic resort

This place was amazing! The staff go above and beyond for you. Our UVC concierge Zayda was fantastic in getting dinner reservations for us and our building concierge Miguel was always greeting us and was available for whatever we needed. I would say the staff here were exceptional, we never wanted for anything.
