We stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancún for 14 nights from 29 April to 13 May. We travelled from Gatwick in the UK via British Airways, and it was an amazing holiday from start to finish. It is a beautiful resort with stunning surroundings, great food and drink, plenty to do, and a real feeling of luxury without ever feeling stuffy. For us, what made it truly special was not just the setting, but the staff and all the little thoughtful touches that made every day feel effortless. We stayed in a swim-out room in Block 23, and it was perfect for us. The patio had the sun in the morning until around 1pm, which was ideal for a relaxed start to the day, before the pool became shaded later in the afternoon, around 4pm. The room was comfortable, well maintained and beautifully presented, and we loved having direct access to the swim-out pool. Even small details, such as the scented toilet paper and face cloths wrapped in ribbon in the bathroom, showed the care and attention that goes into the guest experience. We had daily house keeping and turn down services. The resort itself is stunning, with beautiful grounds, a gorgeous beach on the non-sargassum days, lovely pools and a calm, relaxing atmosphere. The staff were, without question, one of the biggest assets of the resort. Every member of staff we met was friendly, professional and genuinely seemed to want guests to have the best possible experience. Around the pool, the service was excellent. We loved the cold face towels brought round every morning and afternoon, the drinks service to our loungers, and the sunglasses cleaning throughout the day. The daily ice cream cart was another lovely touch and something we looked forward to. We also treated ourselves to a pool cabana with prosecco, which made for a perfect, relaxing day. We tried all the bars and restaurants during our stay, and they all offered something unique within the resort. The beach bar could do with some TLC, but with views like that, who is really looking at the bar? The lobby bar in the evenings was a great place to pause for a cocktail, aperitif or glass of wine. Our favourite drink across the resort was the Spicy Margarita on the rocks — not on the menu, but the kick of jalapeño was a refreshing change from the sweeter fruity cocktails. Our usual evening preference is a G&T, but we found the tonic a little less palatable and often over-poured, so we would suggest asking for the tonic “un poco, por favor.” For breakfast and lunch, we especially enjoyed World Café, where we made the most of the al fresco dining. Breakfast had the usual wide choice you would expect, with everything you could possibly want. Most mornings we preferred a healthier start with the chia seed pudding and yoghurts, which were excellent, although on a couple of days we happily indulged in Bloody Marys and tacos from the outdoor cart. The BBQ pop-ups were also a great lunchtime option. With a different theme each day, they were always popular and offered a good source of freshly cooked protein. There was also a small selection of salads and ceviche's in a cold cabinet, which kept things fresh, although the selection did feel quite similar each day regardless of the BBQ theme. Seaside Grill was great for lunch, whether we wanted a quick bite such as tacos and tostadas, or something more substantial like burgers or octopus. The mixed grill to share was particularly good, especially on days when we had skipped breakfast and had more of an appetite. They will also serve special lunches, such as fried fish or whole octopus, if you pre-order the day before. We had the fried fish and it was amazing. In the evenings, we enjoyed working our way through the different restaurants and dining experiences. Here are our honest observations. At El Patio, there were two menus available. Rather than choosing the more popular Tex-Mex style menu, we tried the tasting menu, which was regional, interesting and very good. The atmosphere in the restaurant was also lovely, and it felt like a more authentic Mexican dining experience. Bordeaux was our favourite evening restaurant — so much so that we visited three times during our stay. We loved the escargots, French onion soup and filet mignon, and every meal we had there was excellent. The staff were amazing here too and really added to the experience. At Portofino, we ate out on the patio, which had a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. My husband was wearing long trousers that evening, but it was still lovely to be seated outside. The food was good, but the portion sizes were surprisingly large — so much so that it slightly detracted from the elegance of the meal, and we felt bad leaving so much on the plate. At Himitsu, we chose not to do the hibachi table, as we have experienced that elsewhere before and felt it was not really for us. I can imagine the show is fun to watch, but we opted again for al fresco dining, which gave the meal a relaxed, almost street-food feel, with people walking past on their way to the other restaurants. The food was flavourful and well presented, although not anywhere near the heat of genuine Thai food. We visited Seaside Grill and Oceana once each in the evening. We had planned to go back, but there were so many other interesting dining options, and Seaside was also open for lunch, so we naturally ended up spreading our meals across the resort. The Mexican Night was buffet-style with outdoor seating and a show, but it felt much more elevated than a standard outdoor buffet. There were various street-food and taco stands, which made it feel fun and atmospheric. For Cinco de Mayo, we treated ourselves to a front-row table with tequila. The show was amazing and the appetiser courses were very good. The only disappointment was the lobster, which unfortunately was overcooked and very dry. That said, the overall evening still felt special and memorable. The activities programme was far better than we expected. There was always something fun or creative going on, but without it ever feeling forced. We loved the variety, including macramé, Hands in Sand, Painting Emotions, Spanish lessons, cooking classes, kitchen tours and even blackjack in the pool. We didn’t do the bike tours or kayaking, or many of the usual beach and pool activities such as volleyball and fitness sessions, but we did love the little golf course and a game of pool. One of the most unusual but memorable experiences was the tuna “snoring” demonstration. It sounds strange, but it was genuinely fascinating and captivating to watch — definitely one of those unexpected resort moments that stays with you. We did not use the spa during our stay, so cannot comment on that, but everything else we experienced was excellent. Overall, Secrets Maroma Beach delivered exactly what we hoped for: beautiful surroundings, excellent service, great food and drink, plenty to do, and a real sense of being looked after. After 14 nights, we still felt there was more we could have enjoyed, which says a lot. A huge thank you to the staff, who really made the resort what it is. Secrets Maroma Beach was not just a holiday for us — it was two weeks of feeling completely relaxed, cared for and spoiled. We would absolutely recommend this resort, and we are already actively looking at dates to return next year.
