My wife and I joined my sister and my brother-in-law at the recommendation of my daughter who spent her honeymoon there. We each stayed in a Jr. suite with an ocean view for a week. The accommodations were spacious, comfortable and equal to the beautiful view. There were a multiplicity of on site activities available so you had a choice whether you wished to stay put or go on off site excursions. Kayaks and small sailing craft were available for use. The beach was routinely groomed as was the premises. The ocean was refreshing but basically sterile if one wanted to snorkel proximal to the resort. Off site excursions were available for snorkeling or scuba which were not part of the all inclusive program. Several shallow pools were available if one preferred not going into the ocean. There are an abundance of restaurants to choose from ranging from Italian, Mexican, French and Hibachi/Japanese style in the main building. A steak and seafood restaurant was also available near the pool area as well. In all fairness we did not eat at the steak house or Japanese restaurants so I have no critic. The Mexican and seafood restaurants were our unanimous favorites and offered the most consistent quality of food. We actually ate at the seafood restaurant for lunch almost daily. The octopus and shrimp ceviche was out of this world. If you're lucky have Alberto be your waiter. The Italian restaurant was disappointing with only 1/3 of the dishes enjoyed. Thumbs down on the chicken parmesan. The French restaurant was good with only a few disappointing dishes. The escargot was delicious. Other food was available such as a taco grill and pizza grill in the daytime and a very large breakfast buffet with many choices. The omelette lady (sorry I don't remember her name) made custom orders which were great and she was an artist to watch. I guarantee there is PLENTY of food available and the booze/cervezas were constantly flowing. Daytime entertainment such as a morning bicycle ride (not taxing at all) as well as evening entertainment such as an homage to the Beatles were available each evening in the theater. I was hoarse by the time it was over from singing along. They also did a Cirque de soleil type performance which was very enjoyable. These performers were terrific, very graceful, powerful and incredibly energetic. This brings me to the staff. The staff would get 10 stars if i could give it to them. They were ever present and bent over backwards to fulfill any needs they perceived or were requested. Everything done with great courtesy and a smile. Standouts include as I mentioned before Alberto at the seafood restaurant Carlos also at there, the food Captain Alejandro, Zacnicte the hostess at the Mexican restaurant, Jesus the bartender in the main lobby, Edgar and Tony at the preferred lobby (if you can get in) and concierges Rolergio and Alejandra also get kudos. Tips are greatly appreciated. I don't think they get much remuneration otherwise. The reasons for giving only 4 stars include a lot of wasted time especially when you 1st arrive in a protocol focused on attempting you to buy into or upgrade an existing timeshare. They set up an appointment ostensibly to orchestrate arrangements for your return to the airport, however, the real agenda has to do with the time share. Food and coupons for spa treatments are offered to help ply the "audience" The sterile ocean contiguous to the resort was a real letdown in that I brought my own snorkeling gear because of how much I enjoy the endeavour. We ended up snorkeling through Cancun Adventures in an area teeming with life. Unfortunately it took almost 1 1/2 hours to get there. Some caveats. It was extremely hot and humid so if your health is compromised or susceptible to those conditions be aware. Another important fact is the areas was loaded with mosquitos. The resort does all it can do and supplies repellant but this area is adjacent to a jungle so when there is no breeze you're going to get eaten. This is ground zero for young couples and honeymooners and the World Health Organization has listed this area as potentially problematic for the Zika virus.

I use Yelp CONSTANTLY, I appreciate hearing REAL people share their REAL opinions about hotels, restaurants and other services… with that said, I am BLOWN away, how anyone could possibly speak negatively about this place. Here’s my experience (and pictures) … My husband and I stayed here last weekend (Aug 11-14) in room 1104. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we experienced nothing but kind, clean, detailed, OVER THE TOP, first class service. FIRST OFF… The room. We were on the PH level in room 1104 and it was incredible!!!! I am very OCD when it comes to cleanliness, and this room passed with flying colors! We had a Honeymooners banner hung across our door and were welcomed with a bottle of champagne and a personal note and welcome! Room 5 stars, for sure. FOOD… as you may know they have 24 hour room service. The menu is pretty extensive and the food delivered is FAST and lovely. It’s definitely more on the simple and bland end… but you won't often be eating in your room anyway!! The breakfast and lunch buffets will BLOW YOUR MIND. Think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for adults… ENDLESS tables of EVERY kind of food your heart could desire. Italian, sushi, curry, vegan options, fresh fruit platters, vegetables, steak, chicken, salads, tostada bars, and DESSERTS!!! Endless DESSERTS. Make sure you check the hours of each buffet because it is FANTASTIC and the service at the buffet restaurant is also 5 stars! Friendly wait staff who all speak perfect english and are so happy to help you and make recommendations for your day! RESTAURANTS …. The three main restaurants are AMAZING, especially Himitsu (make sure you make reservations asap) BEACH… the beach is perfection. Every day they clean up the seaweed so you can enjoy endless amounts of white sand. Tons of comfy lounge chairs and eager staff members who want to find you the perfect spot and get you started with a drink! POOL… the pool is HUGE, the entire time we kept wondering where all the guests were… they built this pool to be so large that you always feel like the hotel is empty… more than enough loungers poolside, and again, plenty of friendly staff to serve you!! Along with the guys who walk around offering cold/scented towels, there was also a team walking around cleaning peoples sunglasses… DETAILS people… 5 stars for sure!! And lastly the activities… every day you are given a schedule in your room with all the activities they offer!! Anywhere from beach volleyball, kayaking, painting, bike tour thru the jungle, mexican bracelet making, dance lessons, spanish lessons, water polo… and they are a BLAST. All free, and all run by a super fun entertainment staff. Carlos was a stand out for sure. He truly made our vacation so much fun, he is witty, thoughtful and spoke perfect english. He began to feel like family and I will truly miss seeing him around! Christina was also super helpful during all the activities, a joy to be around and always making us laugh! O and I can't forget the spa… I have been to MANY fine spas in my life and this one tops them all. Hands down. YOU MUST GO! I honestly could write a novel about this place, please ignore the negative reviews. We had a truly magical holiday and cannot wait to go back… and yes we drank the water and ate ALL the food and never once got sick!!!! Some other standouts at the hotel were Nancy at the front desk and Rogelio who welcomed us on our way in. I also hate to admit this, but my husband had a bit too much to drink one night (I blame their amazing cocktails) and after a late night stroll on the beach, he lost his wallet… when we went back down (around 2am) to look for it, and two men on staff (who i believe were cleaning up or tearing down something) insisted on coming down to the beach with us, they pulled out flashlights and searched in the sand with us and all along the walkway and pool area, lifting chairs and trying their hardest to help us. I eventually found it closer to our room, thank God. All in all. This place is a dream and the people who work here, AMAZING. My husband and I are already planning when we can go back!!! THANK YOU SECRETS MAROMA!!!!

Hello all of you reading this! My wife and I recently stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach again!! We have lost count as to how many times we have been there. Do you count how many times you come home? That’s Secrets Maroma Beach, it’s just coming home. This stay was just as wonderful as any other! I do have to say that the staff seems to have gotten better. We saw many old friends and others new to SMB. As always, the new staff is the cream of the crop! Arriving at SMB is always such an experience. For those of us that are older, it's much like the guests arriving in the old t.v. Show Fantasy Island! We were greeted with smiles and “welcome home”. The service seemed even more attentive, which is hard to do at SMB. Being a member of UVC, we have access to the Preferred Club, and were whisked away to the Preferred Lounge for check in. Check in staff and bartender are so nice! Like always, the service and hospitality was excellent!! Bartender Andy was there, with a huge smile and hug waiting for my wife and I. If you decide to visit SMB, please introduce yourself to him, you will love him! Another thing we noticed at the Lounge is that they added an outdoor covered deck. We spent a night or two out there enjoying a drink. What a great addition. This year we decided to book a Preferred Room with patio tub. This was the first time we had booked on of these rooms and we loved it! It was a change from the swim out in that we had a bit more privacy. The room was perfect, maid and turndown service was wonderful! Room service was prompt and oh so good!! Our building concierge was Roberto. You may recognize his name from previous reviews. If i am not mistaken, he has been at SMB since the beginning. It was so nice to see him, he giving my wife and I big hugs. We were also greeted by Diana, who not too long ago was promoted from Entertainment Staff to concierge! Seeing long time friends here make our stay so much more special! The restaurants were once again spot on and delicious! They changed up the menus slightly which was a nice change. We used the poolside concierge to help us book a special dinner. We worked with Janet to book it, she was so helpful and friendly! She found us that night to make sure we were happy with our dinner, once again a special individual that only SMB hires! We always look forward to dining at Portifino. Oscar and Pablo were kind, attentive and made our experience there that much more special. We also had a Chef's Special Dinner at El Patio, wow!!! It was a seven course meal prepared to our liking. Chef Hugo did an excellent job, creating works of art with each dish. Our waiter Salvador was very pleasant and his customer service was excellent! Luis the manager ensured that we were well taken care of. The dinner we had there was by far the best we have ever had at El Patio! Himatsu is another must do restaurant . Monica was the hostess. We saw her earlier that day in training as a concierge, then at Himatsu that evening both times with a happy sire about her shows just how well SMB takes care of their people. And last but surely not lease breakfast at World Cafe! There is no better way starting your day than a breakfast out on the patio at World Cafe. The staff and food are excellent! Tania and Freddy made our mornings perfecto! The Spa at SMB is very special. We booked a couples massage, arriving early to take advantage of the hydro-therapy area. It’s never been crowded, making it a perfect retreat for us! The staff at the spa is outstanding. They pick those perfect for the calm, soothing feel that is found within the walls of the spa. Our massages were again top notch, enjoying every second of it. The Spa is pretty much mandatory here at SMB. We booked a day at the beachbeds and they were again wonderful! It’s so relaxing. I can't explain just how nice it is, you need to book one to truly understand! Alajandro was our concierge. He was outstanding! He was yet another testament to the high quality people they hire at SMB. I hope this review helps out. If you have read my other reviews, you will no doubt get the theme……..Secrets Maroma Beach has and always delivers top notch service, food, entertainment and long term friendships! We can’t wait to go back home!

Went here 7/19-26 for our 10 year anniversary and stayed in the preferred swim-out room 1610 which I would highly recommend as we used it more than half of our stay. Check-in - We were greeted with champagne and cool towels and taken to the preferred check in - no golf cart service :( - which was quite fast. Since I booked through Expedia we were given several free perks which was nice. The bar in there was decent as were the snacks, unfortunately we did not go back in there until we were checking out. As for the time share, send them an e-mail ahead of time telling them you are not interested and it will not be mentioned. We arrived to the hotel at 9am and were told that the room would not be ready until 3pm, which was fine as hubby headed straight to the beach/pool and I went to the spa which was beautiful. Beach - Not the hotels fault but oh the freaking seaweed!!! They tried cleaning it but there was so much. We ended up walking the beach and about a mile to the right (if you're facing the ocean) there is an isolated and very clean beach, hardly any seaweed and no people. We swam there for an hour until boats docked and people showed up :) If you walk to the left past the abandoned hotel there are some tide pools but beware there is a lot of trash. Pool - was nice but since it was 100* out I found it odd that the water was so warm, expected it to be cooler. Was always easy to find a chair and the wait staff was prompt with drinks, every time I turned around I was being handed another one. Food - the restaurants at the pool had good whole grilled fish, shrimp and other grilled items. The restaurants were all decent except the Italian joint had the worst chicken parm I have ever had. But the risotto and hubby's meal were delish. AND they were out of cannoli's! The Japanese was fun and hubby is still talking about the salmon, it don't like salmon and I will admit it was delish. Never made it to the buffet. Drinks - i am not a heavy drinker but yes, the drinks were watered down. I should NOT be able to drink 9 mojitos and still be able to stand. Not even a slight buzz. But the drinks at the lobby bar were stronger which I thought was odd. Hubby has a theory that the alcohol at the bars is manufactured weaker to keep people drinking all day in the sun... Shows - I have seen real Cirque and their version actually made me laugh but it was entertaining none the less. Room - big and clean. Beware slippery floors coming out of the swim out. And as MANY other reviewers have noted, the toilet is not private, it needs a real door. Overall a good time and I would go back after the renovations are done.

This place was fantastic, we were there with 6 people and had a wonderful time. You first walk in and they meet you with smiles and a nice cool face towel. Check in was so easy and simple, the lobby is huge and there was no pressure at tall to do any talking to anyone about time share deals. The place is big and beautiful. Two main pools are awesome and our room was fantastic, we had a swim out room and that was just the best. We mostly hung out at the pool and there was always something going on. The foam party was so much fun. There is also a quite pool area and the beach was very very nice and clean. The beverages were flowing all the time and name brand liquor was available. Beer, was Bud Light, Corona Light, Modelo and Pacifica. All can beer. Then breakfast buffet was wonderful, lots of choices. Had Dinner at the Italian restaurant which was our favorite, did the Mexican buffet at pool area one night. There were also several shows in the theater, Beatles Fest and then the next day Rock Show. I would highly recommend this resort and will return. Only complaint is my room could have been a little cooler, was not hot by no means, but I like my room cold to sleep at night.
