I stayed here with my husband and family. While the hotel is nice, one of the entertainment staff members, Marcos was extremely threatening and rude. He made threats to my husband that were out of line. Marcos stated he was upset because he did not receive a tip from us the day before when he came to put one of the games away and we asked if we could finish the round. He then became irate and made demeaning comments to my sister in law. When we complained to the front staff, no one seemed to want to help or provide any assurance that he would not bother us again. Given the threats he made we felt very uncomfortable the rest of our stay. The hotel is not concerned with how it's guests are treated or for their safety. I would think twice before coming here. No one should be treated the way we were treated there.

Well, we are 'Excellence Hotels' lovers and just HAD to check out SMB for ourselves as they're always compared on travel forums. We have been to EPM, ERC, Beloved, and EEC and loved all of them. We've also visited SPM and SPLC (see reviews) and I will say the Secrets brand is very consistent. We wanted to go somewhere exceptionally nice to celebrate our 5-year anniversary so we chose this 5-diamond hotel. It is gosh darn perfect! We stayed in a newly renovated swim-up room in building 24... the renovated rooms are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. Building 24 is in the middle of the resort, so it's an easy walk to anywhere. I read a lot about privacy concerns in the previous rooms... they've addressed this with the renovations. Now there are shuttered 'doors' that can enclose the entire bathroom and the toilet room is completely frosted glass with no 'peep hole' handle. Speaking of renovations, they were working on a building while we were there and you would have never known. They block off the area really well and actually place speakers playing really loud nature sounds and it surprisingly works to drown out construction noise! Our room was right across from the elevator/concierge desk, so it was not very quiet. And being on the first floor, we had neighbors above us who had lead feet, so for a week we heard a lot of stomping at all hours. We thought it'd get better after a day or two and it didn't but by then we just sucked it up and didn't feel like going through the hassle of packing up all our stuff again and moving rooms. This was the worst part about our stay but somewhat self-inflicted since we didn't bother asking to relocate. The room was well-appointed and we found housekeeping and turn down service to be on point every day! We also did an excursion and got muddy doing ATV jungle driving so we had some clothes laundered and they came back perfect and pristine! There was also a handheld steamer that worked like a charm to get suitcase wrinkles out of our evening clothes. We had emailed the hotel a couple days before and specifically requested a swim-out room in building 24, so it was nice that they honored our request. They had also decorated the door with an anniversary banner and we had fresh fruit and sparkling wine chilled and waiting. We requested that we not be given the vacation club presentation, as we've done it before in Cabo and they also honored that request. The check-in process was EASY! And we didn't do Preferred. They gave us the welcome champagne and cool towel and we were headed to our room within 15 minutes. Even though we had a swim-up room, we didn't use it once, so that was a bit of a waste. We just didn't have the time during the day because we were at the main pool and beach and then in the early evening it was too cold with no sun. It was unusually chilly the week we were there and I was cold in both the main pool and at the beach with the high winds. The beach is BREATHTAKING. And gosh darn perfect. Not an iota of seaweed. Sand that feels like silk. Icy turquoise blue water and plenty of palapas/loungers. The beach wait service was great and we wanted for nothing! The hotel's food and beverages are best of the best. Anyone who says the food is 'OK' or the food is bad... what do you normally eat??? Or what did you order?? EVERY dish from appetizers to soups to salads to main courses to desserts was absolutely delicious. The presentation was on point too. Heck, even the room service was outstanding! Hot and fresh upon arrival and very tastyâ€¦ even at 2am!! At first we went with what everyone else recommended and did French and Italian - incredible! We did the sit-down Asian and it was also phenomenal. We were going to skip out on the Mexican but decided on it for our last night and were so glad we did. We met Gabriel and he was one of the staff members who stood out to us. He found out we were celebrating our anniversary and put together something really special for us with a couple off-the-menu appetizers and a beautiful dessert at the end with well wishes written in chocolate. THANK YOU, Gabriel!!! We also really love the dinner buffets on the lawn and did two of those - one was a BBQ theme and the other an International. The buffets at Secrets are about as good as buffets come. Yes, I will agree with some other reviewers that their food can be a bit on the salty side, but not so much that it detracts from the flavor of the dishes. Again, there is a lot of variety and options for everyone. We also wanted to give a shout out to the food and wine concierge - JANET! She was such a sweetheart!! We bought a bottle of wine each night for a private table at the front of the shows and thought it was worth every penny! Janet recommended some great wines and it really added to the overall experience. I read people complaining about this on here... just say 'no thank you' if you're not interested and move on. They don't hound you or hard sell you at all. Janet was extremely friendly and professional and we were grateful that she approached us at the pool the first day to offer this to us! As far as drinks, they had all the good stuff... Ketel One, Grey Goose, Makers, Jack, Crown, 1800, Don Julio, Herradura, etc... the best cocktails were made in the lobby bar and in the restaurants. Pool and beach drinks were good for what they were... they don't have time to put TLC into a perfectly hand-shaken margarita. The house wines were also fine so there's no need to spend extra on other bottles if you don't desire. Let's talk ACTIVITIES... this hotel had more activities than we've ever seen! SO much fun... putt putt, a trampoline, life-size pool table with kickballs, ping pong, tennis, corn hole, badminton, horseshoes, croquet, frisbee, volleyball, flag football, beach soccer, water basketball... I could go on and on... The Entertainment Staff was who made our trip. We LOVED these guys and gals so much and were really sad to say goodbye! Thank you to VICTOR, ALEJANDRA, JAIR, and RICARDO for their hospitality! They were SO MUCH FUN!!! And most of them are new... Secrets needs to keep these kids happy. They do an incredible job and work from 8:30am - 11:30pm... and always high energy, always smiling, always positive and upbeat. They really are an asset to the hotel and deserve bonuses! I also hit up the spa on our final day and it was heavenly! I talked to a spa concierge on the beach and he was able to get me in that same day at 6pm and I paid $160 for an 80 min massage... a great deal and money well spent. I did not do the hydrotherapy but everything else was spectacular! KARLA - thank you for the stress relief before my trip home! People talked about the mosquitoes and we did get bitten a little, but it wasn't too bad. I normally get eaten alive by mosquitoes and took bug spray to help alleviate. I just sprayed on my lower legs, feet, and arms before leaving for dinner in the evenings and was fine. Then one morning we go to the Coco Cafe (coffee house) and I got bit like 6 times sitting in there! Just bug spray at the beginning of your day and you'll be A-OK. So for our final assessment of EPM vs SMB... there really is no clear winner. Each has its pros and cons. The thing we love most about Excellence is that EVERY employee there is happy (down to the gardeners) and will make an effort to acknowledge you and get to know you. No one at SMB was unfriendly or rude, but it seemed like most were just doing a job and less interested in fraternizing with guests. We didn't really 'click' with anyone until our third day there and normally one of our favorite things to do is start getting to know the staff right away. Also, Excellence Hotels really does a great job making you feel special for being a returning guest. They always acknowledge and thank us for coming back, offer complimentary upgrades at check-in, keep record at the restaurants, etc... and there is none of that at Secrets. They don't know if it's your first or 20th time. I wonder if joining UVC gets any recognition? SMB by far has the better beach... food is spectacular at both... drinks are a little better at Excellence but not by much... sports bar/disco are way better at SMB... day-time activities are better at SMB. Night time entertainment is good at both, but a hair better at EPM in my opinion. SMB had a rock show (awesome), circus show (decent), burlesque show (meh), magic show (terrible), Beatles tribute (good), Motown tribute (ok). EPM has Broadway recreations with more dancing and theatre, while SMB has more singing and acrobatics. SMB has better buffets and EPM has a better pool with a 'lazy river' that goes around. SMB has better room service and food service at the beach and pool while EPM does not. SMB has a lot of 'extras' that you can pay for and EPM doesn't. EPM has a way better mini bar with snacks and multiple kinds of beers as well as full bottles of liquor in roomâ€¦ at SMB you have to be Preferred Club and still mini bar is lacking. Would we go back to SMB? In a heart beat!!

We booked our stay with Brenda Jimenez Executive Services by GBS . She was so helpful and kind. She really cared about our trip and our stay. She calmed my nervous about ever issue. Thank you Brenda you did an outstanding job. Upon arriving we were swept away to preferred club to check in and greeted with welcome home and champagne and cold towels. After check in our amazing concierge Roberto brought us to our room filled with banners, balloons, champagne and cake. We stayed in Building 16 on the 3rd floor. It was perfect, as it overlooked the ocean and the pool. Your building concierge arranges almost everything you need from Hibachi grill to cabana rentals to confirming boarding passes. They are so valuable please use them and take care of them as they do so much. Rooms: Clean, cold, beds are comfortable. Please note that the shower door and bathroom stall door are frosted glass and when the lights on you can see outline of your other. My wife and I have been together for 14 years and we both rather not see each other in the bathroom stall so we draped a beach towel over the door for extra privacy. Just a quick tip. Turn down service was always a nice touch. Pool: no need to rush down at 8am like other places. pool was very nice and always has events going on. Pool swim up bar was always fun especially during happy hour as it closes at 6pm. Beach: The prize of this resort. The white sand was so soft, the water was perfect and you can see the fish swimming at your feet. Sun Fish and they do not bother you. You can rent a cabana for a fee everyday but you donâ€™t have to. We rented it on our last day and it was worth it, wish we would of done it a few more days. But see your concierge and book early in your trip for future days as they book up. Alejandro at the Cabana's along with Armando and Marco the waiters were unbelievable. They laughed and made us feel at home everyday. They made the beach even more special than it already was. Dining options: Room Service always an option, fast and food was hot. Spot on Breakfast: World Cafe was amazing. Endless options and always changing it up. Omelet station was amazing but we couldn't resist the Huarache station. (Tip get one and a over easy egg on top from the station next to it), If you can think of it for breakfast it is there. Lunch: Alot of options, they do alot of BBQ's either on the beach or pool side, along with the Pizza place and some days the world cafe will be open as well. Sea Side grill was great and we sat there on our first day, Note you can have the beach or pool waiters bring you food from this restaurant just ask for a menu Dinner: Italian, French, Mexican & Japanese all require long pants for men. No big deal Italian was very good but being from NY and Italian i am harder on this restaurant than any other. Portion sizes in all restaurants are small so order a few things. Pedro our waiter was spot on. Burrata was awesome and even the lasagna was good. Osso Bucco I wasn't to big of a fan of. French: Duck was like butter got pretty drunk on wine so i cant remember to much Mexican: Looking at the menu we were iffy, but we tried it out, It was out of our comfort zone and some ingredients we were hesitant about. But WOW were we so shocked and amazed, the food was out of this world. Give it a shot and take a chance. Japanese: Pad Thai was fantastic and a big portion and we did the Hibachi, food was good but Hibachi is Hibachi. Sushi was fresh and alot of options. Not many seats so sometimes there is a wait, but you have the lobby bar across from it which is awesome and usually someone singing there. Oceana: Long pants not required and it over looks the pool. GO here and ask to see with the best waiter in the whole entire secrets maroma Antonio. We called him Antonio Banderes. We was so warm and personable. He went out of his way to make us feel like we were stars and celebrities, Told us stories of his grandmother and her recipes. He truly was the star of our vacation as we sat with him 2x's and wish we would of done more. He is an amazing person and a star. Words cant describe how much respect we have for him. Thank you Antonio for making our nights so memorable. GO to the sports bar and see Edgar for a night cap, Great bartender and makes one heck of a drink. Always smiling, always laughing. He was our night cap spot and was awesome. Nightly shows and Desires club were great but buy that time we were exhausted. The resort and the grounds were perfect. The staff is so friendly and they love to smile and laugh with you. They take care of you like you are the highest VIP in the world. Enjoy the vacation and the resort its amazing and nothing short of spectacular. Thank you everyone there.

We finally made it back to Secrets Maroma for our third visit. Our first visit was in 2009 almost a year after they opened and then again in 2011. This review is kind of long and detailed, but I didn't want to leave anything out. I emailed the resort after we booked our reservation to let them know that we would be celebrating our 9 year wedding anniversary, along with another couple that was traveling with us, and that we had an early flight into Cancun in hopes that we would be able to get into our room a little earlier than the check-in time of 3:00pm. Alfredo emailed me back within a day letting me know that they would do everything they could to get us into our room sooner and they noted in our reservation our celebration. We tried to check-in around 11:30am and our room was not yet available for us, so Mario handed us a pager and said that we were welcome to change into our suits and grab some lunch. There was a guy who tried to sell us on the vacation club, but we were very direct with him that we were not interested and it wasnâ€™t an issue. We promptly headed to Oceana where we were greeted by a smiling and friendly Geronimo. He gave us great service! I ordered the shrimp tacos and they were delicious! After lunch we headed to the beach to relax while the hotel prepared our room. Unfortunately, our pagers never went off, but the guys went to see if our rooms were ready, and they were (this was around 3:00pm). We were taken to building 24 where we had booked an ocean view room, so they put us on the fourth floor and the view was beautiful! We were given one of the newly renovated rooms and it was so nice! The bathtub was larger than we remembered from our previous visits and the furniture was different, it was perfect. We were near the construction, but honestly, it wasnâ€™t that noisy and did not in any way disturb our vacation. One bummer was that when we were escorted to our room, there was a â€śhoneymoonâ€ť banner on our door, when in fact it wasnâ€™t our honeymoon. So, our concierge Gerson told us that he would fix the banner to an anniversary banner and make sure that we received our anniversary package. Unfortunately for us, Gerson had the next day off (good for him!) and we didnâ€™t receive our package or corrected banner until our third day. We saw him downstairs by his desk and told him that the mistake had not been corrected yet and he was more than happy to correct it and he did it quickly too! He was fantastic and it seemed as if he genuinely cared about our stay. Next, we truly enjoyed the entertainment staff! They made our stay so much fun! We went on a bike tour with Jose (Pepe) and Gabi and we were the only ones on the tour. It was so enjoyable talking to them and they shared some fun legends with us about the trees and plants. Pretty interesting! My husband played beach volleyball every day that we were there and I played a bit toward the end of our trip. We had a blast! They had more beach games than we remembered from our previous stays. We played Bocce Ball and horseshoes. They have a bean bag toss too. Because we had rainy weather while we visited, we got involved in a couple of the rainy day activities in the lobby. We made bracelets and played Jenga with Pepe. We tried archery with Pepe one afternoon also. The hotel hosted a casino night with play money and our group really enjoyed that too! The shows were really good too! The main female singer was fantastic! That woman can sing! She was great in the Love Affair show and the male singer was great too! All the actors, band members etc were great, but those two singers were the highlight of the evening entertainment for me. For the food, we had some great meals! The salmon at Portofino was excellent, as were all of the desserts. We had amazing service with Bernardo at Bordeaux. He knew our food allergies as soon as we were seated and knew our names too. The brie was delicious as well as the bread and butter and I ordered the duck. The duck was delicious. Bernardo really went the extra mile for us by bringing us an anniversary dessert (creme brĂ»lĂ©e). We also went to Himitsu two nights while we were there. One night we dined in the restaurant and the food was good. We went back for the hibachi grill another night and had a couple of issues there. My husband is allergic to shellfish and the wait staff was aware of that. I believe there was a miscommunication because our hibachi chef cooked his meat on the same grill as all of the shrimp that was ordered. He used all the same utensils as well. My husband would have been so sick if he wouldâ€™ve eaten that, so we asked our other server to bring my husband his meal from the back kitchen cooked on a separate grill. He was more than happy to do it for us, but in the past, they have cooked the shrimp separately, so that was a bummer. However, the tempura ice cream is amazing! It was SO good that we had it 3 times while we were there! One of our favorite desserts. The room service was good as well. It does take about 35 minutes for delivery, but it wasnâ€™t a problem. The food was good and they set our food out on the balcony when we asked them to. It was great! The buffet was good too! We loved the omelet station! The ladies work so hard here!!! And our servers were great every day here too. The pizza station out by the pool was one of our favorite additions to the food menu. Your pizza is cooked to order in a brick oven by the pool. So tasty. We ate at Oceana about 3 times total during our stay because we wanted to sit down at a restaurant but, they also serve food by the beach or you can order your food from a server by the pool too. The poolside/beachside wait staff are outstanding. They checked on us constantly and we tipped them because they work so hard! In fact, we tipped everywhere because all of the employees truly work so hard. They were kind even if it they werenâ€™t tipped, but we chose to reward them for how great they are! The bartenders were great, a little heavy handed at times, but excellent overall. Anything you want, they will make it for you. I drank Grey Goose most of the trip and switched to Absolut at the end. If you want top shelf, just ask for it. Theyâ€™ll give it to you. The beach is so beautiful too. The staff works so hard to keep it clean from seaweed everyday. The water was warm and lovely! The pool water was a bit chilly for my taste and it was cooler weather down there when we visited. We got a lot of rain. One rainy day we went to the spa and my husband and I had a couples massage. I had Maria and my husband had Teria. These ladies seriously gave us the best massages of our lives. AMAZING! We were able to get a discount from a spa concierge by the pool, so I would recommend speaking with one of them poolside to save some money. The housekeeping was outstanding as well. We enjoyed the turn down service each night with fresh towels. Everyone at this resort made our stay memorable and we had such an amazing time! It was so relaxing and it lived up to (and possibly exceeded) our expectations from our previous visits! We would definitely return again in the future if we can!! We spent 3 days at Secrets Maroma the first week of November 2017. I don't normally write reviews, but since these were so helpful to me when I was planning our trip, I wanted to add my 2 cents worth! We were there for our 20th anniversary and stayed in building 15, with a first floor swim out. We only got in the pool there because we had paid for it and wanted to say we did. If you were staying in a hotter part of the year, it would be awesome, but since it was so nice on the beach, we spent ALL of our time on the beach. Highly, highly recommend Oceana and the grill next door for dinner. The ambiance and view were spectacular. For breakfast we ate the buffet everyday... it was delicious and VERY comprehensive with what it provided. The number of people in that space was overwhelming to me but the live music each morning kept me going back (one day sax, one day a harpist). We ate lunch at the beach beds, but there was a huge buffet by the pool every day that was quick and easy. If the fire show happens one a night when you are there... GO! It was fabulous and something you would easily pay $50 for tickets to go see at home. I do want to emphasize that you will be given a time share pitch at check -in. I was exhausted from traveling at that point and politely said no thanks (it's an invitation to a breakfast to get the full sales pitch) and got no push back, so it was fine. I did see numerous couples getting the tour in the mornings and I'm sure there was a benefit to doing it ( a free massage I think??). Besides that, it was the most relaxing and enjoyable 3 days of my life... and honestly 3 days wasn't long enough to decompress from the pressure of travel and get into the swing of the rhythm of relaxing (if that makes sense). The staff at the resort was second to none... so kind and helpful. We enjoyed every conversation or interaction we had. I commented to my husband that it was a real bummer to get back to the Atlanta airport with surly TSA after the positive and helpful attitudes at Secrets! There was definitely a mix of ages at the resort... honeymooners, young 20 somethings in groups, mid 30's and 40's couples like us, and then lots of groups of 50's and 60's age. I can't think of a single negative thing. Our concierge on our floor (Nati) was knowledgable and helpful, always called us by name when we saw her in the halls. Alejandro and Armando at the beach beds went above and beyond to provide excellent service and we truly enjoyed getting to know them. If you wanted to "do" something or get a little rowdy there was a place to do that or if you wanted to relax and stare at the ocean in peace and quiet you could do that. The grounds were beautiful and immaculate. There was construction going on, but it was camouflaged so well that neither saw or heard it. The sand on the beach is perfectly white and the beach is raked and kept clean ... it truly was a remarkable experience and I would highly recommend it!
