Reviews for Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort

A pleasant time all around

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

We stayed with five other couples at the Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf and Spa resort from April 22-29, 2024. We spent most of our time at the resort. We were all preferred club members, which is a nice advantage to have at this resort. The pool concierge Jaime Lagunas works very hard on keeping guests happy and comfortable. We built a nice relationship with him that week. Also, one pool server in particular went above and beyond for our group. Her name is Asucena Hernandez. We were celebrating my sixtieth birthday and she brought a lovely tray of treats along with a sculpted pineapple drink! We had a lovely time. The only negatives I could provide is that getting pool lounges is a competition between guests. People get up around seven and throw a flip flop or sunscreen on groups of chairs to save them. This caused our group to get into competition. Some people didn’t show up to their chairs until after noon which is a bit unfair to other guests. Also, most in our party did not agree with one aspect of the men’s dress code. We feel like requiring men long pants in the hot weather is a bit overboard. Shorts and a polo shirt with closed toed shoes should suffice as a casual, yet suffice dress requirement. My husband and I would return to this resort!

Best resort ever! Shout out to Antonio!!!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 21 hours ago

This resort was honestly an amazing experience for my friend and me. The staff is really what distinguishes this resort from others. We were never left unattended and always had a drink in our hand when we were at the pool. Angelina, Maria, Mario, and Maria Jesus were some of the sweetest people we met and always made sure we had everything we needed. We never really got a chance to know any of the bartenders besides the one at Desires where Abraham always made the best drinks! The entertainment team did such an amazing job at getting people involved around the pool and during the shows at night. Since our first day, Antonio went out of his way to explain how things worked around the resort and answered every single of our questions that we had. Antonio's friendly energy and hospitality was the highlight of our trip. He shared lots of stories with us about Mexico and even helped us make some bracelets. Sexy Felix and Jose were hilarious people with great energy that always put a smile on our faces. Some other staff members that don't get enough credit are the golf cart drivers! We had great conversation with Andy and Samuel, who really showed us what Mexican hospitality is really like. As for the food, we never seemed to get bored with it and were always excited about what we would be eating next (Sometimes we had 4 meals a day). As for our room, we had a swim out room and my only complaint would be that they do not get a lot of sun, but only because of the way the trees are placed to provide some privacy. Finally, this resort is a little old but it definitely does not show with how well this resort is taken care of. Almost everyday I was in shock to see housekeeping staff washing the stone and floors. Truly an amazing place and I hope to come back.

Food poisoning at hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We booked this trip to celebrate a milestone birthday and having previously enjoyed a perfect stay at Secrets Akumal decided to stay with the brand. We chose this hotel based on the long beach as we enjoy walking and because less seaweed washes up in this area. We stayed in preferred club suite 2420 April 22-30 At first glance the hotel seems as perfect as their web photos but once you scratch beneath the surface there are many problems that I would not expect in a 5star hotel. The beach is beautiful and the gardens are very well maintained. However repairs and maintenance of the property itself are neglected. Perhaps this is because the property is closing in a few months for a year for refurbishment as explained to us by one of the managers. Taps in the bathroom above the basin were loose and coming away from the wall. Reported several times. Never actioned. We are aware that no bookings are taken for the restaurants however on one evening we were told that the wait would be over an hour. Broken umbrellas, stained beach towels and Bali bed roofs broken and flapping in the wind It is impossible to get a chair/umbrella in the shade at the pools. We took breakfast around 0730 and all chairs were already reserved at this point. Sometimes no guests appear for hours but the hotel does not enforce it’s policy of removing towels. We spoke to one of the supervisors at the pool and he said there is nothing he can do and that some people reserve chairs as early as 0500. Same problem at the preferred area on the beach. Taking a shower before dinner is not pleasant as the water is barely warm or on one occasion cold. I assume this is because so many guests are showering at the same time Reported to staff at the club reception who responded that we were the only guests experiencing this issue. They offered to send a plumber but we had to cancel due to the issue below. On day 3 of our 8 day holiday we ate at the buffet and Portofino before developing acute gastro-enteritis. We were unable to leave the room for 3 days as the symptoms were so painful and frankly we needed to be near a bathroom. The hotel sent a manager Paulina to visit us and she immediately offered to pay for a private doctor and said that the hotel would absorb all charges. I found her offer strange. We are insured and would have been happy to pay these charges ourselves. We told her that we had not left the hotel since arrival and believed that this was caused by something we had eaten or drunk at the hotel. She said that this could not be the case as nobody else in the hotel was ill. However I have to question why she was so quick to offer the free doctor services. The doctor came very quickly as she is resident at the hotel. I asked her if any other guests were unwell and she told us that she had been ill the day before and that she was treating a staff member with the same symptoms. The doctor visited each day and prescribed various medications. As there was no improvement she returned and prescribed antibiotics and said that we may have to go to hospital for rehydration. She has also provided us with medical reports. Paulina offered to book restaurants for us and arrange Bali beds at the pool but we were unable to take up this offer as we could not leave the room. We had to rely on room service to follow the diet recommended by the doctor (dry toast, chicken broth, fruit etc.) On day 6 we felt a little better and left the room to sit outside and eat something but as soon as we returned to normal eating the problem returned and with very bad stomach cramps. We also took Imodium as recommended by the doctor in order to stem the problem so that we could take a 9 hour flight home. Paulina checked on us daily and came to see us the day before departure. We chatted for about 10 minutes before she produced a form which she said we were required to sign as the hotel had offered assistance and paid our medical fees. It was therefore disappointing to read the form and find that this was not exactly true. The form was actually a disclaimer absolving the hotel of any responsibility or liability for the incident which ‘might’ have occurred and to state that we would not make any claims against the hotel. We did not sign the form. We checked out the following day. Luggage pick up from the room was booked for 1330 but nobody showed up and we carried our own bags to the lobby. We settled the bill and nobody asked us how we were. Quite frankly I believe that they were pleased we were leaving. The journey home was not great and we are still very ill. We contacted our doctor when we got home and on Friday she sent us to hospital. We described the symptoms to the hospital doctor who said without doubt this was definitely food poisoning because a) Antibiotics are only prescribed for bacterial food poisoning and do not work on infections caused by a virus b) We became ill at the same time c) Symptoms described We still cannot eat ‘normally’ and the doctor has advised us to take medication for colic and rehydration tablets. She has also said that it will take 4-6 weeks from onset of symptoms for a full recovery. I have never experienced a holiday like this. We have come home 7 and 8 pounds lighter respectively than on arrival and with cases of clean clothes. We have no photos of the holiday. We have flown for 10 hours to go nowhere and not left the hotel for the entire holiday. We had to cancel plans to visit Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza. We were confined to the room for 4 days of our stay and sick for 6 days and are still unwell. Our stay at this hotel was a complete nightmare

Beautiful Resort, Delicious Food, Chill Vibes

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We enjoyed our stay at Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort. The resort was absolutely beautiful and we enjoyed having the beach so close. We experienced delicious meals from most of the restaurants (even visited a few more than once- Oceana, Portofino, Himitsu). The service was great all around and the resort is very relaxing. If we could suggest one thing it would be to have more music playing around the resort. Desires, the "music" lounge, did not have any music playing almost every time we stopped in after dinner. You had to wait for the DJ to arrive, which I understand, but it seems like some sort of music should always be playing at a music lounge. The golf carts are convenient to get around the resort, but sometimes you may wait quite a while (the wait seems to be especially long when returning from the spa each time). Overall, I would recommend this resort and would visit again!
