Reviews for Jumby Bay Island

They're working on it....

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Just returned from a four-night visit to Jumby. Really hard to rate this property, as they were beyond stellar in some areas, and not quite up to snuff in others. I am planning to go back, though. Read on for pros and cons. PROS: This property is GORGEOUS! We have traveled all over the world and and Jumby more than holds its own. The decor is perfect: luxe yet understated. I'm a decorating fanatic and couldn't find a single quibble with anything in the looks department. Staff were very sweet, friendly and fun, although they need more training (see cons, below). Very peaceful and quiet place. Even on a busy beach day, we never heard any noise, and it was SO tranquil at night. That's a big plus for us, but those hankering for nightlife and bustle may get antsy. Dinner at the Estate House was delicious, in a stunning setting with excellent, low-key service. The sweet and talented chef also did a bespoke private dinner for my 60th birthday, which was outstanding. Jumby meets you at the gate when you get off your plane, then whisks you through customs and immigration, so no long (long, long) waits in line. We didn't realize this and went to another property first. Ouch! They did whisk us through on our return, though. Was fun to be chauffeured in a black limo (or SUV), and the boat ride over (5 minutes, tops) was smooth aboard a luxe catamaran straight out of a Bond movie. CONS: This hurts to write, as I loved the property, but they're having issues with food and service. Some of this may have been the fact that it was Easter week, so there were lots of multi-generational family groups. It's hard to keep the kiddos and romantic couples happy at the same time! As the romantic couple, we got forgotten one evening at dinner, waiting so long for food that I got a migraine. I had to go back to the room and the food was cold and inedible by the time in reached us. I spoke up, to say the least, and every effort was (successfully) made to correct the problem going forward. I also felt for this level of property that the food overall was lacking, except at the Estate House. Limited and not very good wine list, reliance on buffets, and very small portions. I'm a size 2 and not a big eater, but was hungry on more than one occasion. Service needs work. Everyone was SO nice, but it seemed no one was in charge. Requests were forgotten, we had to chase things down, and having multiple wait staff during meals made the service worse, not better. Fewer staff who are responsible, accountable and empowered may solve that problem. I know they're working on it. My husband, who is an activities freak, was a bit restive. There is lots to do, but because of Easter week, several things got canceled or weren't available. I was happy lolling on the beach, but those who want to be constantly on the go should make an effort to pin down activities in advance. My husband loved the spa, but I had a bad experience. Due to migraines, I can't have strong fragrances, and unfortunately, I got hit with aromatherapy before I knew what was happening. I had to leave 20 minutes into a 60-minute massage. No charge and lots of apologies, but those types of errors should not happen. When someone says, "No fragrance," believe them! Overall, despite wobbles, Jumby is a special property with a stunning beach. I hope the talented staff and management get food and service in hand, as at this level, there is no room for error.

Beautiful holiday vacation

We were very happy with our stay at Jumby Bay. Everything from our room to public spaces is perfectly pristine. Service/transfers to and from the airport are exceptional. A few people really stood out during our stay: Elvira, Roan, Quincy and Samantha were all very kind and helpful. Thank you for providing such a tranquil experience for us!

Laid back and casual elegance and incredible food, beaches and service!! 5-Star all the way!

From the moment you are met at your gate and whisked through Customs and taken to a very nice Catamaran ferry, until you leave and are whisked through customs again, it was the perfect vacation with every detail thought of! The hotel or villas are spacious, beautiful and have outdoor showers, in room fully stocked refrigerator and anything you could want. The staff are genuinely interested in you having a great experience! This is a place to go for relaxing and having great food, drinks and enjoying the most beautiful beaches anywhere! It is like a small private club as there about only about 60 private houses and about the same number of guest suites. You are treated like a member of the club with some great amenities. Sailing on the Hobie Cats, boating or skiing, biking and beach chairs with great food and drink. The food is fabulous! We had a great variety from the higher end Estate House to the Pool Grill, which had some of our favorite dishes. Pool House Grill: gazpacho verde (avocado based), prawns, grouper were all amazing. Veranda: breakfast had house made croissants, great yogurt, omelettes, fresh juices, cappuccinos, hash browns, eggs Benedict and so much more! Beach service had great fish tacos and shrimp tostadas. Estate House Fine Dining: soufflés, tuna appetizer, scallops, lamb, risotto, cheese plate for dessert and lemon tart This is not a place to go to play golf, shop, sightsee or night life. It is a very relaxing place and 5 days is a perfect amount of time.

Paradise found

Stunning stay at a spectacular resort. From the moment we arrived in style on the Jumby Bay launch the staff were fabulous. The General Manager Will leads by example with complete customer focus and attention to detail to ensure a perfect stay. The suite we had was opulent and practical with quality furniture and accessories throughout. From the magnificent accommodation manager Ashley to all the housekeeping staff, beach and restaurant crews nothing was too much trouble . It is clear they value their positions and are happy to be part of the Jumby team. All this and a fantastic beach to complete the paradise location. We stayed at another excellent resort on Antigua the week before our Jumby experience but nothing can surpass this. Thank you one and all.

Nothing about it supports the price tag.

I have stayed at a lot of places all over the world. This was one of the more expensive stays. Price is not everything, but when you pay a premium, you expect things to be a little better than average. I am not an overly picky guy, but I do notice almost everything regardless of the topic. Here's what I liked- Upon arrival we were met by a jumby bay rep, and accompanied through the airport, and brought to a waiting car. It made you feel taken care of, but the airport is small, and not crowded so it would have been a breeze to navigate without help. The ferry over was nice, and only had a few guests on it. The people welcoming you and explaining your stay were very friendly, in fact we did not meet anyone that worked at JBI that was not friendly and accommodating. our room was beautiful, the outdoor tub and shower were a great feature, and although we were a little further away than most it was still only a 10 minute walk to breakfast, etc.. Our bed was extremely comfortable and clean drinks were good, easy to get, no lines etc. Genny's bar was a great location to order lunch, or have a drink. White night was very nice, and felt kind of special for us. well done and the food was better than most other nights. What we didn't care for- We are there for 7 nights, and there are essentially two places for dinner, and one (the estate house) is only open a few days a week so many nights it is just the veranda. The veranda menu is marginal at best. It has FOUR meals listed under Entree. If you don't care for or perhaps can't eat something, good luck. For this kind of money, I want a MENU with choices, or a menu that changes a night or two a week. Very limited, and honestly the food was just ok. There was NO LOBSTER. Lobster season is closed. They told us many guests don't come when lobster season is closed because they enjoy the food so much more. We would be those guests, but there was no information on the JBI website stating the season was closed, only menus with various entrees including many with lobster, which we were excited to try. My wife even had her first nights meal planned. yes we love food, and this should be disclosed. It mattered to us, and according to JBI, others as well. Wait staff takes your order and doesn't write anything down..That is GREAT- IF you get the order correct. At almost every meal we had an issue with the orders being correct, and many times the staff had come back two or MORE times to ask again what we wanted. I am not talking about anything difficult we are not picky eaters, and in fact never sent anything back, we just ate what they brought. When you're hungry you want to eat, and not watch your spouse eat their food while you wait another 20 minutes for your order to be corrected.. I am talking about ordering an omelette with three ingredients and getting two wrong, after you ask three times. There is no reason or excuse here. Write it down and get it right, or don't, IF you can remember. The gift shop should be closed. It is an egregious attempt to sell products at ridiculous prices (women's bathing suits for $500, mens t shirts for $300). It made me feel like because we could afford to pay to stay here it was ok to try to get every guest for whatever they could. Honestly the feeling I got in the "gift" shop made me sick about JBI. We had a visit from a nurse because my wife hurt her back. The nurse was very friendly, but called me and said she had to "outsource a heating pad if she could locate one it would be $180+. I agreed because I believed we needed it. It showed up in about 10 minutes, so again, are you outsourcing, or did you have it and just want us to pay 15x what it is worth? My wife was very upset and made me return it. Paths are not well lit for bicycle riding after dark, and the transitions from walkway to lawn/gravel are high in some places which could present a problem for older folks, or bike riding. Circumnavigation was not something I would do again, it was essentially a boat ride around JBI, where we were told the name of every house, most of which you can't see much of. the pools are some of the worst I have been to at a resort of this caliber. One pool is at the pool grille, and in a week I never saw anyone in it. It would be like swimming in the middle of a restaurant, so I get it, but they need a pool guests can use comfortably, that is nice, and has a bar. Also, there is not a jacuzzi on the property. Farm dinner was decent, but I let there actually starving. portions are tiny, and I'm not a big guy. The estate house bar was beautiful but the food was served in very small portions, and again, the menu is very limited. We were scheduled for a 10:45 ferry to go home for a 1:45 flight. The ferry and ride took us exactly 15 minutes and we sat in the airport for 2 1/2 hours plus. Again, a small airport, not crowded and easy to navigate. We could have gone an hour later - but when I requested a later ferry I was told I could pay $100/pp to go later. Again, it felt insincere, and greedy. We paid enough already IMO. I wanted to sit at Genny's barr and enjoy our last hour or so talking about our trip. Lastly, I have been home three days, and still have not received an email with my final charges from Jumby. They did email me to tell me it is coming, but still no bill. It should be a part of the check out process. They email you an itinerary every morning so it would seem to be very easy to email out a final invoice the night before you leave, but I received nothing. For me, one hundred percent, this place is over rated.
