Hermitage Bay in Saint Mary, Antigua and Barbuda

An unpaved road on the southeast coast of Antigua leads to Hermitage Bay, a collection of 25 villas clustered around the brilliant blue Caribbean Sea that offers a place to relax, restore and reconnect to a deeper self. Suites are airy and soothing, constructed from purpleheart, greenheart and other woods from sustainably managed forests in Guyana. Daily meditation and yoga classes, along with the natural beauty of deserted beaches, bring a sense of balance nurtured by caring staff.

Match your breath to the breeze rustling through fragrant frangipiani and oleander. Go for a swim among coral fish and dine in a grove of almond trees on a salad from the kitchen’s own organic produce garden. Gaze out at the silhouettes of Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis on the horizon while sipping a glass of prosecco.

Hermitage Bay is an escape from the 'big box tourism hotel brands' to a true Caribbean holiday experience. The sparse, contemporary decor of the cottages, beautiful wood floors and window trim but with a no-fretwork minimalism, is a juxtaposition from the colonial style architecture of the cottages. Mine came with an outdoor shower, a bathtub large enough for 'entertaining' and a daybed on the verandah where I read myself to sleep. I began my second day with a visit to the spa for a relaxed hour then a trip to the beach to soak in the sea's salt water. Dining was always a treat. Great dining but without the over-the-top embellishments that work well in New York or London but overwhelm when transplanted to the tropics. I had a memorable visit.

Smaller, no kids, only villas. Fantastic staff, very pleasant/personable. Their strong point. Live local music at dinner. Food fantastic. Great little bay with beautiful blue water. Pretty close to airport, 25m. Villas comfortable. We spent most of time on beach villa patio using minibar and just saunter across sand into water. Perfect. Spa nice. Even a decent workout area which we used everyday.

Hermitage Bay is one of the most relaxing resorts we have visited. Have travelled to dozens of high end resorts all around the Caribbean and none is more relaxing than Hermitage Bay. The staff members are the most attentive and kindest people we have experienced. They make every effort to do anything you ask. The rooms are not fancy by many standards, but they are amazing in that the setting is so beautiful and they fit perfectly into the location. Plenty of comfort for anyone to get a much needed rest. Too many resorts have staff that do a great job, but then stand with their hands out for a tip. You never feel like any of them expect anything but a thank you. This adds plenty to the experience. Food was delicious, opportunities for staying busy with water sports and boating, fishing, snorkeling etc, but we just sat and soaked in the view and the relaxation. No children to deal with makes a big difference. We love kids, but not on our relaxation vacations. No loud music booming all over the resort. Plenty of friendly fellow vacationers, if you want to socialize. If you want to relax, this is the spot.

My husband and I visited about 3 1/2 years ago, and I have so wanted to return. We finally did, during the first week of April. I didn't think it could be better, but it was. What made it so great the first time was that it was a lovely, intimate resort with wonderful food, drinks, staff, location and effortless luxury/casualness. This was the case again. We ate so good, we drank what we wanted, and enjoyed each others' company on the beach and in our poolside suite. The afternoon sun next to our plunge pool was heaven. We were there for 6 days and never left the resort; we didn't want to! There are watersports there if you are so inclined. But if you feel you must go off the property, a helicpoter ride over Montserrat is recommended. We did that last time, and thought of going again to see how it has changed, but were just too happy where we were. I thought a second trip would get it out of my system, but no, it is too much like another home that our next trip won't be soon enough! I cannot convey how peaceful, blissful and relaxing this vacation was. So, yes it is a beautiful resort. It is well maintained (good job ground guys!) but the staff imbue such a great vibe to the place that we felt like friends and family, but certainly not in an intrusive way at all. Most of the staff were the same as our last trip, so that tells you something right there. A few even remembered us! We told some friends about the place and they are booked for next month. Y'all take good care of them too!

My wife and I traveled to Hermitage Bay to celebrate our 50th birthdays this year. It was perfection for us. From the moment we arrived, it was an experience of laid-back luxury. The first thing you notice is the wonderful setting and the bay - two miles across and not another soul in sight. The resort is completely secluded. We had a plunge pool bungalow up the hill. The tub was super-huge, the outdoor shower was great, and I appreciated the ease of use for the music system. Also, the in room bar was always stocked with what we needed and the A/C kept the room cool. The scheduled maid and turn down service was perfect. We spent most sunsets in the plunge pool, watching as the sun set behind the island of Nevis (I think) in the distance. Montserrat is also close by and easily visible and St. Kitts (I think) was visible some evenings in the distance. It was very cool. We went to the spa three times and the service was excellent and relaxing. Some minor hiccups with ambiance because of the proximity to spa office, but that was probably less than 1 minute of the 4 hours we spent there. The spa workers were great and both my wife and I enjoyed the relaxing treatments. We spent most of our time a the beach reading. There is no need to get up early to put your towel by a chair. There are at least 15 umbrella's with chairs scattered along the 200 yard beach and there was always one available near the main complex. The great beach attendants took care of towels, drinks, etc. The water was calm and the reef just offshore creates a nice in-the-water walking/swimming area just offshore. The beach is covered in shells in many areas, but once in the water the sand is very soft. One of the two highlights of the trip was the impromptu garden tour we got from Fabian. (The garden is at the far end of the beach, to the left of the guard building.) He showed us all the herbs that were grown and gave us samples. He also pointed out limes, corn, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, beats, etc. that he grew for the Chefs. It was very cool to see these things and taste the herbs picked just from the plants. The other highlight were the meals, particularly lunch and dinner. Each seemed like a 4 course, 5 star meal. My wife and I were stuffed, but couldn't resist not having each course as they were so tasty. Plan on spending 60-90 minutes at each meal, but it was definitely worth it. There was a band playing each night during dinner that we also enjoyed. Thank you to all!
