Cocobay Resort in Saint Mary's, Antigua and Barbuda
There is no dividing line between the paradise inside the cottages of Cocobay Resort and the paradise outside – fling open the patio door and let a breeze flow from the aquamarine Caribbean waters over the rustic wood floors and through the crisp white linens of your sleeping quarters. Adirondack chairs anchor a permanent sunbathing spot on the terrace of this waterfront all-inclusive that is equally secluded and connected to life in town.
Slip your toes into floury white sand and let the sun melt away any tension in your shoulders. Float in crystalline waters. Return to dry land for a guided nature walk through the lush hillside with a local medicine man, learning about the healing properties of plants and herbs. Dine on rock shrimp and toast the sunset as waves crash on the rocks below.

Reviews for Cocobay Resort
We spent a week at Cocobay for some winter relaxation - it was just perfect for us. Other reviewers have summarised the hotel as 'rustic chic' - I think this is spot on. There are so many plus points and very little negatives but I will try and present a balanced view. Firstly location is amazing, the bar and restaurant are slightly elevated with beaches on both sides and mainly west facing so this equals stunning views and amazing sunsets. The rooms are all standalone cottages in lush tropical planting and I reckon almost all have sea views. Some people did not like the fact that some rooms face north over Valley Church beach and so don't get balcony sun. I think the rooms with the private mini-pools might be like this. We faced west so had afternoon sun, but with such lovely beaches and surroundings, why sit on the balcony for too long? Also quick to get to from VC Bird, just 30 min and $30US. This is the quieter end of the island so great for relaxing. Ffryes beach is stunning and pretty quiet. Walk to the end to get to big Ffryes, even nicer beach for me but some days there are a few cruise ship visitors but the beach is very long so not an issue. Buy a beer from Larry, nice guy. You can get to Valley Church by walking out the hotel drive and turning left down the track, just 5 min, worth a walk, but you can't walk to Jolly beach as Cocos in in the way. I would also say that there isn't much else around here so if you are looking for lots of bars and restaurants, it's a bit limited, there is Sheer rocks (expensive) in the hotel and Dennis at the end of the beach, we didn't eat there but it looks very nice, more local cuisine and a great setting over the beach. You can taxi to Jolly Harbour for $3US and there are a few more places there. Now the food, we loved it! Beautiful fresh fish available at lunch and dinner every day, great salads and evening 4 course a la carte menu was very well executed to a good restaurant standard. Maybe if you like lots of food and things like chips and pizzas you might not like it, but we like healthier food so it was perfect for us. We didn't feel the need to eat anywhere else and the restaurant view is just stunning. The wines on AI where very good Chilean, choice of 2 reds & whites + rose + bubbly. I like my wine and I didn't feel the need to order any special wine. The staff are impeccable! Just the right amount of friendly banter, relaxed atmosphere and with excellent service. O'Neal runs a really good setup here. If I was picky, I might mention that the pools are probably a bit below the standard of everything else in the hotel but still good. It is a struggle to find any negatives and I would thoroughly recommend Cocobay. We met people that have been there 7 times and everyone we spoke to loved it. Highly recommended.
After reading (and reading and reading) reviews and finding Nicole Merigelli Travel online from many reading reviews, we decided on Cocobay. We visited Cocobay Resort in mid-November for our 20th anniversary. This was our first trip to Antigua. There were all ages (and accents) staying there. I had been concerned it would be all young newlyweds (sorry to show bias against those that have been married 1 day...) but there were just as many "young at heart" couples celebrating. It was a good mix. We reserved the Chattel House cottage level and were placed in Oleander (Bougainvillea and Oleander are the two cottages in that category). Our unobstructed view was stunning. The visit was so great that I'm not sure where to begin! I really could write a novel, but I'll start with our cottage: I would describe it as beach rustic, but there's everything you need so it's not rustic as in lacking. One of the reasons we chose Cocobay was for the private plunge pools, however our water was pretty cold so we didn't use it much -- our pool pointed north, so it was only in full sun for a short duration each day (which explained the water temp to us). We did use the day bed on our porch a lot -- it was great. And to look at the stars at night while hearing the music from the bar located behind the cottage made it nicer. The spa is adjacent to Oleander so there's not full privacy as we expected, but honestly the spa was not super busy so it wasn't a big deal. We just mentioned that it might disappoint those expecting 100% privacy on their day bed and plunge pool. The inside bed was SO comfortable and the a/c unit in the room kept us plenty cool. The shower area is separated from the bed area by a louvered door, and it wasn't very large so we had to get ready one at a time. On our last evening one of the employees delivered rum punch and snacks with a note from the manager as a farewell...totally unexpected and so sweet. The mini fridge stayed stocked and everything was top shelf. I'll briefly mention the food, but overall it was wonderful. It was no problem to sign up each morning for a dinner time. The menu was delicious and we had 0 complaints about the measl. Being a mom, I thoroughly enjoyed the omelette made just for me each morning...that lady is precious. Any drink you can think of can be made for you and when you run out of ideas, they'll create something delicious for you! The staff is super friendly and my only wish was that the cups were a little larger to reduce trips...but that probably helped to keep me out of trouble somewhat. Some reviews were negative about the island businesses stopping them at the entrance to the beach. We were approached, but it wasn't bothersome. We booked 2 jet skis one morning near the end of our stay and that was SO fun. The remaining time on the beach we just enjoyed the beach chairs and calm water! I was talking to a staff member at the bar about the other resort we considered (farther north on the island and closer to St. John's) and she made an excellent point that the water is much rougher in that area due to all the huge cruise ships docking at St. John's. So I was very relieved we chose the calm Fffyes Bay/ Coco Beach area after learning that nugget of local info. We would return to Cocobay Resort in a heartbeat. It was exactly what we were looking for in a Caribbean vacation!

I recently visited Cocobay with my sister-in-law for a quick “escape the winter cold” trip. I couldn’t have imagined a more picturesque location for such a getaway. What we loved: Everyone on staff was super sweet, friendly and helpful. The resort and surrounding beach are gorgeous and very well maintained. The pools and beach are spread out in a way that it never felt like you were there with a ton of people. For sure, there were plenty of guests there at the same time, but it never felt crowded. Tea time every day, with tea, coffee and assorted cookies, sandwiches and cakes. Tiny ice cream cones scooped and served by the pool closest to the beach. I’m not sure if that happens every afternoon or if we just happened to catch it one day, but if you happen to catch it, it’s the best thing ever. The meals in general were all very good. As a vegetarian, I was happy with all the options we had. What we wish we would have known (but know for next time!): Antigua is one hour ahead of New York City. When we landed, they did not say “welcome to Antigua, where the local time is....” And we didn’t research it, so that was on us. When we arrived at Cocobay, we thought we had arrived early enough to enjoy the 4:00 pm tea time. With the time change, we had just missed it, but made it our mission to not miss it the following days. They will sign you up for a dinner reservation on your first night, but for subsequent dinners, make sure you sign up for a reservation at the front desk each day – the earlier in the day the better to secure your preferred time. Also, if you have any dietary restrictions, tell the folks at the front desk when you are checking in so they can let the kitchen staff know. We're already talking about going back in 2019 with our other sister-in-law who couldn't come with us.

Spent ten days at Cocoa Bay in February, celebrating anniversary. The tone is rustic chic. Accommodations are excellent, the pools and beach are wonderful, and the food is good--not five star but just fine with good choices: Breakfast and lunch are buffet style and dinner is served at table with a good menu. The staff are friendly, helpful, and actually a lot of fun. We particularly liked Denise, Joy, Marrique, Tiffany, Sonia, and "Mr. G." We took a boat tour around the island and a car tour. We took the car tour on a Sunday so some things were closed.

This was our 7th stay at this resort so they must be doing something right. I won't describe the hotel as others have done so in detail but everything was as good as expected, the food was wonderful with so many unexpected flavours in the dinner menu, the staff were all brilliant again, helpful, cheerful and friendly. It's like having family who live along way away and you only see once a year. I liked the new touches, water in the rooms and free wi-fi - I know we are supposed to be on holiday but we need to be in touch with family back home. Even the guests were good this year!! The only people acting a little out of order turned out to be patrons of Sheer Rocks - and I do agree with a previous review that their music can be intrusive at times. The whole point of Cocobay is the peace and relaxation - would-be clubbers look elsewhere. Thank you to all the staff for making this a wonderful holiday again - Mr G, Kathleen, Denise, Saskia, Sonia, Kerry, Davern, Jermaine and his silly hat, Jay, Vincia, Cheryl, the Beach Boys - all of them - and especially Nasasha who was so helpful in getting us moved from a perfectly acceptable and large room to one which my husband preferred with its view over Valley Church Beach - I do hope the view will still be there next year when we hope to visit again.
