Hermitage Bay in Saint Mary's, Antigua and Barbuda

An unpaved road on the southeast coast of Antigua leads to Hermitage Bay, a collection of 25 villas clustered around the brilliant blue Caribbean Sea that offers a place to relax, restore and reconnect to a deeper self. Suites are airy and soothing, constructed from purpleheart, greenheart and other woods from sustainably managed forests in Guyana. Daily meditation and yoga classes, along with the natural beauty of deserted beaches, bring a sense of balance nurtured by caring staff.

Match your breath to the breeze rustling through fragrant frangipiani and oleander. Go for a swim among coral fish and dine in a grove of almond trees on a salad from the kitchen’s own organic produce garden. Gaze out at the silhouettes of Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis on the horizon while sipping a glass of prosecco.

This was our second visit to Hermitage Bay and we enjoyed it as much as before, A lovely location on a safe sandy beach, with excellent food makes for the type of holiday we love. What makes Hermitage Bay special is the staff --their positive attitude and friendliness, made us feel welcome both to the hotel and to Antigua. We'll be back!

The airport in Antigua is new and good; the roads are not so, however after a short journey we arrived to the warm welcome. A golf buggy took us and our cases up to our room, nestled in the garden and looking down towards the beach. The room was excellent with our own pool and we were not overlooked if anyone's asking! Upon opening the shutters, the two of us could sit in the large bath, drink champagne and look out to sea which was lovely and the outside shower was fun! We plugged our iPad into the music system in the room which sounded good - there were speakers in the bathroom too. Wifi was better than I have at home. A walk down steps or the golf-buggy road or a golf buggy trip takes you down to the main part of the hotel - just dial 0 and a bellhop comes to get you. All the bellhops that drove the buggies were attentive and great fun. The food was always varied and excellent and you could eat outside or under cover. We enjoyed the demonstration by the head chef one afternoon and a tour of the organic garden where some of the vegetables come from. Never busy, the main pool is pleasant and warm as is the sea. On the beach, sunbeds and towels await and if you want a drink you raise a red flag. A member of staff arrives very promptly to get what you need. Jolly good. There was a little rain while we were there which was not a problem. I used the gym a couple of times in a vain attempt to rid myself of the pounds I was putting on; My Wife went to the spa! Evening music varied from slow to danceable reggae (isn't it always) and it was good to see the staff enjoying it too. Some joined in for a few minutes ... And beware of some of the knock-out cocktails! You can tell that we had a good relaxing time there. All the staff were attentive which makes such a huge difference to a holiday so a big thanks to them from Adam and Tracy. We'd love to come back!

Arrival at hotel was great, nice almond cold flannel and a drink. We were promised, the next morning, a run through of the hotel, what's what and everything else. That didn't happen. We waited for 30 minutes for staff to turn up and in the end had someone do it for their first time reading from cheat sheets. We missed so much information that we learnt late on into our honeymoon (that if you know will help make this a great stay )e.g. - The all inclusive use of the speed boat to go out on trips - That mosquitoes were under tables you eat at and the rooms had spray (no matter how much spray you use after being bitten, you're just a beacon for more bites) - The host of other beach sports equipment available to you (paddle boards, snorkels, peddle boats etc) - If you want a drink when on the beach, just put the red flag wooden sign up - If you want a bottle of champers, just ask the bar and you can take back to your room (or wine, etc) . It really is all inclusive Only on one occasion did we sit down for breakfast and wait for over 30 minutes for our food to arrive (with no service, drinks or anything else). Apart from that, the food was lovely (we would have liked to have known we could request other variations of the food on the menu as well, but didn't find out until the last day and the welcome overview did not cover this as per other comment e.g. Omelette) We booked a couple (yellow) treatment at the spa. Two things really spoiled it though, for what should have been a great experience. 1. The towel they put into your eyes with peppermint when you lay on your back was so strong that it burnt both mine and my wife's eyes.. It was really uncomfortable but we were too polite to say anything.. 2. When we had a full body scrub, we were asked to go into the back and shower off. The shower was freezing cold and as it was rainy/overcast, it was very cold standing out there trying to get a lot of this scrub off (that took ages). It meant that we were cold going back into our treatment which kind of ruined it. Finally, The bath in the room was HUGE and looked amazing. Sadly the hot water tap would not fill this to any degree of an acceptable bath. A real shame as it looked lovely and could have been heaven if being able to fill it properly. But, this place really is amazing. Staff were great. Food was fresh and beautiful every day. It's just a few small things that you need to know about to make sure your stay is a 5 * stay

Small, intimate resort but spacious enough to not feel crowded. The staff made sure you never wanted for anything whether on the beach or in the main building. The food was a outstanding, an amazing variety and perfect portions and presentation. When we were at other resorts we were used to leaving the property for dinner--did not do that even once. The grounds are beautiful-the buildings are exceptional in quality of the beautiful wood construction. Just an amazing place ! Also they maintain a huge garden that supplies all of the fruit and veggies--just too cool.
