Tiamo Resort in South Andros Island, Bahamas

The journey to Tiamo is an adventure in itself: There’s a 15-minute plane ride from Nassau and a boat ride into a sheltered cove on an island with a rich culture and only 2,000 residents. The paradisiacal beach is perched on the world’s third-largest barrier reef, where the Tongue of the Ocean drops 6,000 feet into underwater landscapes that served as backdrops in James Bond movies. Explore the crystalline waters with the aid of Tiamo’s PADI dive center, or while staying dry in a transparent canoe.

Instead of gravitating to the beach, wander through the wild side of San Andros by stepping off your private terrace into a thicket of rainforest. Watch for rock iguanas and indigenous orchids in the underbrush. As you pass a family of mangrove trees on the coastline, follow the call of circling egrets into calm ocean waters and float. Sink into al fresco loveseats illuminated by candlelight for dinner, listening to seafood crackle on the grill.

We were treated like house guests, pampered with every need taking care of. We thoroughly enjoyed all our meals. The food was beyond our expectations. The spa treatments with Marie Felize was superb. We both enjoyed a long massage that was absolutely excellent. The water activities that we enjoyed, scuba diving, west boating tour of the island and snorkeling were well worth it and so well planned by August, the dive master. All of the staff were simply wonderful! With all this said, this luxury small resort is extremely well managed by Winfred and Nicolas, and all the bungalows are beautiful located on the beach with attention to every detail. This resort and beach is well worth the trip!

...and this is a Bahamas has taken the worse of its big american neighbour with so many ugly overpriced resorts with junk food for both human and sharks (shark feeding everywhere which is an absolute shame). If you are looking for a refined small lodge/bungalow hotel in the Bahamas, you've come to the right place. Something you would expect to find more in the Indian Ocean or in French Polynesia, but a couple hours away from Florida. Food is good (despite the fact that you would sometimes expect something more local with a plain good old grilled lobster...but is there any local food left appart from hamburgers and Coca ???). The small scuba center has very good equipment and a trainer available just for you. Of shark feeding...nature as it comes... You're never more than 3 to dive together. Bungalows are comfortable and very simple in their furniture and deco, which is often the best way to stay in tune with good taste and refinement...

As the south bites, where Tiamo is situated, water depth is low, actual swimming is limited, the pools are a great place to soak in the island in a leisurely fashion. Being only one of five couples at a resort is very special. The noseeums are an issue if you react, even covered up and well DEET lathered, I still came home looking like I had a minor case of small pox (the price I pay for going south of the Mason/Dixon Line). The wrap around screen porches are nice, but I believe the noseeums walk right through. The tours and diving are very special and should be experiences, as are the daily snorkel trips. The food is exceptional and utilization of local produce makes it even more enjoyable, nice portions for a low activity location (other than the gym, no real place to walk, run or hike (other than the nature tour). The staff are very friendly and are prepared to help in any way possible. On that front, I should have had someone do a beer run, as the bar costs are a little too high and, when the final bill is presented, tends to leave a bad taste in an otherwise lovely vacation.
