Church of Sant' Antonio

Church of Sant' Antonio

Located next to the historic convent of San Francesco, now the Hotel Luna Convento, the Church of Sant' Antonio da Padova was founded in 1220 as a church dedicated to San Francesco. Tucked into a small spot in a quiet residential area in Amalfi, this church is the center of a popular celebration each year on June 13th, the feast day for St. Anthony of Padua. A statue of the saint is carried in one of the most elaborate processions on the Amalfi Coast, which leads down a narrow staircase from the church to the neighboring town of Atrani where the religious procession with the statue (and marching band!) get on boats. The boat procession continues down the coastline to the town of Conca dei Marini to salute the Church of Sant' Antonio from the sea before returning to Amalfi, where the procession continues on foot through Piazza Duomo before finishing. The interior of the Church of Sant' Antonio features one nave decorated in the Baroque style with paintings depicting Sant' Antonio and San Francesco.
