Bocanegra

Bocanegra

  • Zona Colonial, El Conde
  • Santo Domingo

A bar on a side street of the Colonial Zone, if you don't know where it is you will definitely not find it (just ask any local). It's dark and slightly alternative with walls filled with curious objects and signs. It's usually crowded if you drop by anytime after midnight, filled with the in-the-knows of Dominican society. There is a large general area in front of the bar, but the back is better for chats and laughs, with an open ceiling and plenty of seating. The drinks are fairly interesting, especially their boca negra shot: the tall glass is cooled with liquid nitrogen before being filled with their dangerously strong house concoction. Word of the wise: unless you want to end up underneath one of their tables, indulge in moderation. Good choice if you like going on the alternative track, you'll be in good company.

This is a bar that doubles as a lounge, but, there is plenty of merengue played here so be ready to enjoy good music and dance among the steamy crowd, while sipping drinks and laughing the night away. With decor reminiscent of Cheers, the similarities don't stop there. Go often enough and they actually will know your name. The bar manager is very friendly and more than capable of helping you pick your poison from their well-stocked bar. The house wine is pretty decent and the beer is just how it should be: ice cold. Just the place for you to waltz in and practice your new dance moves on the packed floor, with, if needed, plenty of liquid courage on offer.
