For 900 years, Amberley Castle has enjoyed a quiet existence near the picturesque village of Amberley in Englandâ€(TM)s West Sussex countryside. Today, it remains a prime example of medieval architectureâ€"complete with moatâ€"while serving as a lavish small hotel. This member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux collection boasts just 19 bedrooms and suites, each individually transformed to complement the architecture. Every day here is a keepsake, ending with the spectacle of the awesome, two-ton oak portcullis being lowered for the night.

I’ve been to Amberley Castle quite a few times but haven’t been for a while. We had afternoon tea for my birthday. I had emailed them before hand asking about the croquet lawn and whether we could book it but didn’t receive a reply which I thought was poor. Upon booking I had asked if we could sit outside all being well with the weather. When we arrived they didn’t seem to know anything about this and it was by chance that they had a table left outside. Tables weren’t laid so it didn’t feel special to be honest. We had afternoon tea which was good but not exceptional. But nobody at anytime came back to us to ask if we wanted a top up of tea or sparkling wine. I had to ask in the end and then it was forgotten so I asked again and finally got another pot of tea. One member of staff was lively and smiley but the others that served us just didn’t look like they wanted to be there and didn’t feel up to the task at hand. I had to wait at the desk to pay whilst they were sorting out an issue with a bill on the computer. The things I’ve said may seem trivial but when you’re paying £150 for afternoon tea you want to go somewhere and feel special and we both didn’t feel this. Evrything needs to feel sleek and it wasn’t. There was scaffolding up in quite a few places and everywhere felt a bit tired. It was a shame because I remember it being a lot more sparkly and special. We go out a lot and always recommend places that we like and always revisit places we like. We have no problem paying higher prices for things that are good but I’m sorry to say we won’t be recommending Amberley Castle and won’t be back.

This was truly a magical stay! The afternoon tea was so special and such a highlight from our trip. The staff is exceptional and attentive. We truly felt like we were staying like royalty. I cannot recommend this castle stay higher.

We booked Amberley castle for our 15th wedding anniversary. When you arrive on a beautiful sunny day the entrance is impressive and beautiful but from there on it goes downhill fast. We paid over £600 for a dinner, bed and breakfast which was more or less daylight robbery. The room was very charming but had cobwebs and dust everywhere and the main window blind was broken and not possible to open. The bathroom didn’t have a door on it! We had some drinks in the garden on arrival from an uninterested waiter, two of the choices were available (a range of soft drinks they advertised and no lime cordial for a lime and soda). We took a walk around the grounds to find the putting green advertised which was like a meadow and absolutely not useable. The tennis court had a collapsed net, all in all everything looked totally neglected. We had the 5 x course taster menu which was actually very nice but on arriving in the restaurant we were sat down and not offered any drink or menu for more than 15 minutes (it wasn’t busy). After receiving the food menus we had to ask for an aperitif ! Basic service !! We had to ask for the wine menu and after selecting our second choice the wine arrived, A bottle of rose which was plonked on the table with no cooler or ice bucket, had to ask for that as well. The next day we received our drinks bill under our room door and it was more than £300 which had afternoon teas and various other items, none of which we’d had. Reception had to correct everything and blamed incorrect posting by one of the waiters. In summary a truly disappointing and grossly overpriced experience. Avoid at all costs!!

Very disappointing in view of the cost. Staff were unhelpful, unfriendly and ill-informed. We arrived in torrential rain. No-one offered to help with our luggage. Staff member looked cross when we asked to sit in the lounge and wait for our party. We chose the taster menu for dinner which was served with no explanation to each course and plonked down from unfriendly staff. Although breakfast was nice, it was served by staff who had no idea as to how to wait on tables. Our hot breakfast arrived before we’d finished our first course and we were asked to move our unfinished plates to make room. Dirty plates were not collected at any point. Very disappointed with the whole experience. It was a birthday to remember for all the wrong reasons.

Worth two stars for the view as you enter the driveway and the castle itself. The rest has unfortunately no star value The dinner menu was pretentious and fairly average fare. The service was non existent. Twenty minutes to get a menu and order. Over an hour before our pre dinner drinks arrived and a further 15 minutes before we saw any food. Sat for breakfast for 15 minutes with another couple in an empty room. Went to reception who advised that breakfast was being served on the lawn. So again almost an hour before we saw some food after we turned up. We paid for a room upgrade but were given a pokey garrett in the attic. Dangerous 45% beams were about 3 feet from the ground next to the bed. Hottest day ever in May and it was like a furnace. They even had the towel rail on at full blast. Definitely not a superior room. I gave all this feedback to reception when I checked out, who promised to relay to management. Not a dicky bird from them. Looks like the disdainful levels of service start at management and trickle their way down.
