A thirteenth century castle buried deep in a wooded parkland sounds like the setting for a fairy tale, but really it is home to the exclusive Ashford Castle. Standing impressively on the shores of Lough Corrib in County Mayo, Ireland, Ashford Castle is a monument to a fascinating and timeless history. Once the Guinness Family estate, the Castle has since opened its doors as an exclusive luxury hotel in 1939. Where else could one spend the morning learning how to fly a hawk at the School of Falconry, escape to the Walled Garden for a romantic picnic, and relax in the afternoon with a soothing massage at the spa? Filled with family heirlooms, rich furnishings and priceless objets dâ€(TM)art, Ashford presents the chance to enjoy the splendor of a bygone era in comfort and style.

To be fair this is a famous hotel in a great location but if you are not American be aware. We stayed for a few nights having been a number of times previously but doubt we will return. The food is ok but really not great. Bland and cold at best. George V very expensive. The dungeon is poor ambience ( and no heating) and Cullen’s we found amazingly condescending at best. Really surprised by this as not the same as before. We are lucky enough to have been to amazing hotels globally but have never experienced a lack of room make up by 3 pm in the afternoon !! When I called reception at 3.20 on I was advised we will try and get to you soon but we have a number of check ins to service. Really? That is appalling. Fires across the hotel are gas and therefore no atmosphere or welcoming. The bar is very small for the amount of rooms and the days we were there ( we are from England) full of very loud Americans who seemed to want to own the place. Awful. There are many hotels vastly superior in the area for value, experience, food and ambience. Please try Ballynahinch or Balllyfinn. Sadly this hotel is

My wife Sandy and I stayed at the Ashford Castle the second week in September 2025. It was an extraordinary hotel experience. The grounds are meticulously maintained and artfully laid out. The staff was obviously more than well trained in that were knowledgeable and always helpful and anxious to please. We did falconry with a wonderful guide using a Harris Hawk and the next day skeet shooting. Both were our first time experience. One day we did a boat ride into the huge surrounding lake. Our room was amazing as we were upgraded to the Ronald Reagan Suite. It was so magnificent I took at least a dozen photos to record how great the rooms were. It is a pricey place to stay but if you can afford to stay there then you are making a huge mistake not spending at least three or four nights at Ashford Castle. Paul Goldner

We Stayed at Ashford Castle for 3 nights in November to celebrate our Golden wedding anniversary. We were upgraded to the Kennedy Suite as it was a special occasion which was a wonderful experience! Our 3 days at Ashford were nothing short of magical, the lovely warm, welcoming atmosphere and the exceptional staff made us feel very special. Ashford is a very unique place and we cant wait to return. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so special. David & Angela Morrrow

We have stayed at the castle previously and have an afternoon tea at christmas every year. We go back because it has always been perfect. On our most recent visit this was not quite the case. On this visit it was for our afternoon tea. The staff on arrival were welcoming and polite. We were welcomed into the castle and to the room for afternoon tea. We were seated with 2 other tables. From this point onwards as lovely as the quality of the food tea etc was the service was very inattentive. Certainly not to the level of attention we have previously experienced at Ashford. Yes when the waiting staff served us they were very polite and knowlegable on the service, but as an example (we wont linger on further examples) we were waiting nearly 25mins from being seated to getting a drink whilst other tables arriving after us were served before us. We had to stop staff to ask for refills on our tea and drinks where as with other tables they were continually refreshing etc. It was very noticable to us. The only thing that arrived without asking was the bill just placed on our table before we had actually finished complete with a 25 euro service charge. Really disapointed on this visit, it was my wifes birthday and the visit was a present.

Excellent hospitality and the perfect "Irish castle" experience for anyone - great for couples, families, etc. We will definitely be back! Would highly recommend visitn during the fall. The grounds were absolutely stunning.

This is one of the finest properties we have ever visited. It is a beautiful castle, but it is also a world class hotel in the most beautiful setting you can imagine. The grounds are large and bikes are available for guests, the fishing on the river and the lake are first rate, and the service is unmatched. We have stayed twice and can't wait to go back again.
