About the Hotel

A thirteenth century castle buried deep in a wooded parkland sounds like the setting for a fairy tale, but really it is home to the exclusive Ashford Castle. Standing impressively on the shores of Lough Corrib in County Mayo, Ireland, Ashford Castle is a monument to a fascinating and timeless history. Once the Guinness Family estate, the Castle has since opened its doors as an exclusive luxury hotel in 1939. Where else could one spend the morning learning how to fly a hawk at the School of Falconry, escape to the Walled Garden for a romantic picnic, and relax in the afternoon with a soothing massage at the spa? Filled with family heirlooms, rich furnishings and priceless objets dâ€(TM)art, Ashford presents the chance to enjoy the splendor of a bygone era in comfort and style.

What a Great Way to top off a Two-Week visit to Ireland!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

We took our family of 8 here for several nights while touring around the Republic. Two grandparents, daughter & spouse, two teens, two 10-year olds. WOW!! Fantastic hotel and grounds, lots to do, great service, good food - it had it all. We picnic'd, experienced falconing, clay shooting, swimming, and overall relaxing. Staff easily knew how to handle guests of all ages. Typical Irish March weather (liquid sunshine) didn't stop us from doing anything. Yes, it's expensive, but we planned for it, and it topped off a great two week visit to the "Old Sod"!

Don't do it...

I would have given a 1 star rating but the hotel and grounds are so impressive I had to go with a 2 star. Sadly, the hotel itself and the grounds are the only impressive things. This hotel appears to cater to tour buses. Two of them were there during my one night stay (thank goodness I only stayed one night), full of rude, entitled, most likely getting a discount visitors. The staff is way too "in your face". I almost felt attacked just trying to get checked in and into my room and my wallet was severely lighter by the time I got there with all the tipping. After all that, at the end of the stay, they add an "optional" tip on as well. Like you're going to tell the young staff member to their face, "no, you suck and I'm cheap so I'm not going to throw in the extra 20 euros". I had dinner at Wilde's at the Lodge. The food wasn't even up to the word average. The monkfish was dry and bland, the steak was flavorful but also dry and oddly thin. So, imagine a very unimpressive meal, at a crazy high price, and a baby screaming at the table next to me. That was dinner. Breakfast the next morning at the George V was not impressive either but the food was better than the night before. For the insane amount of money they charge for a night, just don't do it, doesn't even remotely approach being worth it.

Best country hotel and estate in Ireland!

We had a great stay at Ashford Castle. The hotel and grounds are beautiful; rooms were clean and had all the amenities and the service was excellent. We had great meals and enjoyed spending the afternoon at The Drawing Room. All the staff was attentive and joyful at all times. We would love to return!

Nowhere better to stay in Ireland

Ashford Castle was definitely one of the highlights of our 7 weeks overseas. The castle itself is just beautiful, picturesque beyond words. The living areas are all beautifully appointed. The open fires add to an atmosphere of refined splendour.our room was delightful and spacious.

This is one of the finest properties we have ever visited. It is a beautiful castle, but it is also a world class hotel in the most beautiful setting you can imagine. The grounds are large and bikes are available for guests, the fishing on the river and the lake are first rate, and the service is unmatched. We have stayed twice and can't wait to go back again.
