A thirteenth century castle buried deep in a wooded parkland sounds like the setting for a fairy tale, but really it is home to the exclusive Ashford Castle. Standing impressively on the shores of Lough Corrib in County Mayo, Ireland, Ashford Castle is a monument to a fascinating and timeless history. Once the Guinness Family estate, the Castle has since opened its doors as an exclusive luxury hotel in 1939. Where else could one spend the morning learning how to fly a hawk at the School of Falconry, escape to the Walled Garden for a romantic picnic, and relax in the afternoon with a soothing massage at the spa? Filled with family heirlooms, rich furnishings and priceless objets dâ€(TM)art, Ashford presents the chance to enjoy the splendor of a bygone era in comfort and style.

My husband and I just returned from a stay at Ashford Castle in Ireland. It was the most wonderful time with everyone associated with the castle so very friendly and also so helpful. It is an extraordinary property only surpassed by the level of service provided by the staff. I highly recommend staying at this remarkable property.

Check-in took nearly an hour and delayed our golf tee time: no one at the gate, the Bridgman helped tourists while we waited to cross, inside 20 minute wait near the fireplace for the checkin agent. The checkin agent took forever to find our room because she was pouring us a drink and chatting about the recipe. Dinner was over 3-hours with extremely inattentive slow service. Example the tea service was served over 25 minutes: first the two cups arrived followed 10 minutes later by the sugar and creamer and followed 15 minutes later by the tea. At that point we were exhausted and could not sit any longer. Shooting clay pigeons was amazing because of Gunman John’s skills. He taught us with patience and a great steadiness expected around a loaded shotgun. When we were done John provided suggestions for our afternoon including the town of Cong. This was the only personalized service we received at Ashford castle.

This was our highlight of our trip. Could only afford one night but it was just magical. It would be nice if everyone could just experience this just one day in their lives. The castle is amazing. A true fairytale. Not one pinch of dust. The staff are so attentive. They bring you things even before you know you want it. Their uniforms are spotless. The attention to detail is impressive in the rooms. There is nothing you could want whilst there. Sure it’s expensive but if you’re after something super special and magical then go. We wondered through the grounds in the afternoon, had afternoon tea and scones, did the falcon experience, went clay shooting, had lunch dinner and breakfast there and lazed around. Thank you to frank and tom at the entrances - enjoyed chatting to them.

We stayed for 5 nights. Seamless arrival. Bags were sorted, check in comfortable (room was not ready so we had lunch), room overlooking the lake was comfortable. The grounds are lovely. We were fortunate to have sun almost every day. The breakfasts, lunches and dinners were uniformly excellent. Bar was excellent. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. They are trained to take great care of guests, and it shows. Only issue was a concierge who seemed a bit confused by what room were in, but he was very apologetic and it wasn’t a problem. Did falconry, skeet shooting, and a boat tour of the lake. Village of Cong is sweet, as is the abandoned monastery. Easy trip to Cliffs of Moher and Kylemore Abbey. Will definitely return to this unique hotel and recommend to our friends. Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing stay.

We stayed at Ashford Castle as part of a group tour. There is so much to see and do here that there isn’t enough space to write about it all. The rooms are a tad smaller than Lough Eske, but very plush and comfortable. The hotel staff is warm and welcoming. They strive to meet every need. The grounds are immense and impeccable. Activities abound, though they are pricey. If you like dogs, make sure to walk with the deerhounds in the morning. It’s free and a fun activity. I highly recommend the Castle if you’re looking for a special treat.

This is one of the finest properties we have ever visited. It is a beautiful castle, but it is also a world class hotel in the most beautiful setting you can imagine. The grounds are large and bikes are available for guests, the fishing on the river and the lake are first rate, and the service is unmatched. We have stayed twice and can't wait to go back again.
