Reviews for Il Borro Relais & Chateaux
A very unique (at least for us) experience at an old and cozy small property. If you are looking for the true Tuscany experience (in a historical way) then you are definitely in the right place. But please watch out - the buildings/rooms are very old and comes with the caveats of everything "old" - things squeaks, doors won't close properly, stairways are not really meant for you to climb up and down ... etc. Nevertheless, it is cute. Their restaurant is expensive though (especially when compared with the ones in the town of Cortona).

I'm going to begin by saying that I would have LOVED to give this property a 5 star rating. The entire property is amazing. The rooms, restaurants, Vin Cafe, Horseback Riding, Golf area, and pools are to die for. The entrance is a bit complicated, especially if you are driving but we were quickly told by someone on an intercom how to get to the front gate. Once you enter, it's also hard to recognize the reception. Especially since a lady from the staff kept telling us to keep driving and enter the property without even asking what we were looking for. My husband asked for the front desk and she apologized, she had confused us with another group, and directed us for the front desk. We get to the front desk where a very unwelcoming lady named Mariana handed us a piece of paper that had a map. "Hello, passports please. here is where you are, here is where your rooms are and here is where the restaurants are. Breakfast is from (bla blabla).... And we are fully booked for dinner tonight so you will have to find a place to eat outside of our property." We were so angry. It was my father's birthday and we would have been happy to make a reservation for dinner ahead of time, had we received an email letting us know we had to. Once we were about to explode (since we had a long drive, and were welcomed so roughly, Valetina arrived. Another, much nicer concierge, she immediately apologized for the inconvenience, said that she had found us a table by the fireplace for our dinner at the main restaurant, and offered to help us in any way possible. THANK GOD for manners, and better service. The experience was lovely. Our rooms were beautiful. I suggest upgrading to a Prestigue Suite. It's definitely a difference in the modern amenities (closets etc.) My parents had a two bedroom suite which doesn't classify as a Prestige Suite, and the decor was a bit more "modest" and had a less fancy set-up. Our Prestige Suite had in room speakers that played our own music throughout our room (which honestly felt like an apartment since it was so big.) Our dinner wasn't that impressive. The dinner menu at the all-day restaurant is basic, and bland. The salads were good, and a few of us ordered the gnocchi pasta plate. Which was 5 little potato pasta balls in a few spoonfuls of cream. Nothing to write home about. However: Breakfast there is delicious, and more than full. And dinner at their upscale restaurant is DELICIOUS. I would recommend booking dinner at the more upscale one on the second floor. I initially thought it would be a more complicated/elaborate tasting menu only kind of place. But it's delicious, a la carte, and the service is fantastic. i was sad we weren't recommended to book that night's dinner there, since it was such a special occasion. My sisters and mother tried the Horseback riding, and had a wonderful time. I enjoyed the afternoon at the Vin Cafe and wandered over to the Spa. I wanted to book the one hour spa experiecen (hydrotherapy etc) and asked to see the amenities. It's probably the ONLY thing that this hotels needs to upgrade. The area is small, dark, and very basic. It looks more like a regular shower and steam room with a small dark jacuzzi area. So I preferred to take a walk around the property and enjoy other parts of the hotel. Absolutely take the Wine Tour. It's a unique experience and one of the most well-kept facilities I've seen around Italy (I've have had the blessing to visit quite a few). The only negative about the wine tour is Francesca, the girl who gave it. Mostly because of her attitude, and unfriendly tone when asked questions or dealing with tourists. She talked back to one of the people on the tour and asked them to "wait because she wasn't done" with what she was saying. Her physical appearance was sloppy and her attitude was that of annoyance and zero patience for anyone. She is also the person who tends to the gift shop, and when my parents were there trying to buy some jackets, she rolled her eyes and told them she was about to leave and close up, "but she will help them make the purchase" as if it was a favor. Once we left the wine tour, we were left at the front desk where I wanted to book a separate Horseback riding experience for myself. Mariana once again, was rude and told me there was no space. I took the initiative to go to the stables, and ask the instructor if she had time. The lovely British instructor told me there was a spot at 5 pm with another person and that i could confirm my presence a bit later with Valentina. Valentina our concierge was more than helpful. She was amazing at making reservations outside of Il Borro in the surrounding towns, and giving us tips on where to eat, and what to visit. We were happy to have her around the corner from our rooms. The property is gorgeous and the majority of the staff is helpful. Being in the industry, we know it's hard to find well-trained individuals everywhere, but we expected a bit more service-wise from the staff. Especially when we arrived. I would definitely recommend staying here. It's an experience that deserves a minimum of a 3 night stay. One day to stay there and enjoy what the property has to offer, and another two to enjoy the surrounding towns and areas.
Il Borro was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. The property is magnificent, beautifully maintained, elegant and peaceful. Accommodations: Our gorgeous two story apartment was delightful and spacious. Very comfy bed, huge bathroom with all the amenities, including sumptuous Ferragamo vanity soaps and lotions made exclusively (I think) for Il Borro! Opening up the windows in the morning to the sounds of the Italian birds felt right out of a movie! Lovely artwork, fine moldings, furnishings and fixtures. The cool location: Our room was in the midevil village...and you really do get the feeling of what it might have been like for people living so long ago. Love that! (Love all the modern amenities too.) Cobblestones, trails, hidden pools, artisans and "Peoples" the resident outdoor cat! Lots of stairs! To do: My husband and I loved exploring the property. Plenty to do and see. We bought a pound of carrots (in a nearby village grocery) and fed the Il Borro horses on a couple of mornings; gorgeous animals. We meandered through the kitchen gardens, and hiked around. I took a wonderful cooking class with Chef Luca while my hubby relaxed by the pool with a glass of vino. We then enjoyed our meal in the restaurant. Delish! Have breakfast: Another special treat at Il Borro is the breakfast! Beautiful location with the morning sun, so many choices including a fresh bowl of burrata every day! Oh my. Homemade jams, breads, pastries and of course the fresh veggies from the garden. Service: Exceptional service. Every single person on staff is a delight. They are gracious and genuine! Il Borro feels magical. Could it be a real place where everyone feels happy and special? If judging from the expressions on all the other guests faces, perhaps it is. Don't miss this gem! We'll be back!

Planning for our honeymoon I looked at hundreds of properties and wineries all over Tuscany. After watching their video "welcome to IL BORRO " I knew must go here. IL Borro's film instantly takes you to their gates showing the unappalled beauty and tranquility of the this very special place.. Unfortunately we didn't have too much time to spend in Tuscany because of our trips around Italy so we just booked one night. After being on property for about 20 minutes we called and canceled our hotel in Florence for the next night to stay a second night at IL Borro. This was worth every penny! WINE TASTING We had reservations for the 3:00 p.m. wine tour and tasting. This is a must for a wine lover but would still be very entertaining for anyone. I found the price to be ridiculously cheap for what you got out of the tour and tasting. Two white wines and four red wines were served during the tasting, all were very good. After the tasting in the cellar you are then able to go to the wine store to buy whatever you would like or get shipped straight to your home. If you are going to buy some I do recommend that you do see what is available in your country. In the U.S. only 3 of their wines are available to you, so I would get what you are not able to at your home straight from their winery(Alessandro Dal Borro is a very special bottle) DINNER We made reservations for Osteria del borro (their premier restaurant) that night. We looked over the menu and everything looked good, I did know before coming to dinner they do offer chef prepared tasting menu's. We are not usually up for ordering a menu that you have no clue what is on it but.. we were only there for two nights and thought this would be a great way to taste a lot of different dishes. We did the chefs 8 plate tasting, all smaller plates that are perfectly thought out and in a wonderful sequence. You must do this if you are not going to be staying at the property for a long time. This was one of the most delicious dinners we have ever had but seemed to be taken to another level because of the experience that the chef and the staff delivers. All servers were amazing but ask to be sat in Leonardo's section. His wine expertise and attention to detail on a complete dinner service are second to none. BREAKFAST WAKE UP for breakfast!!! Not a huge breakfast person but the spread was ridiculous. Pretty much anything you could think of, Smoked swordfish was fantastic ! SPA After breakfast we both headed to get massages. The masseurs were great and we both really enjoyed the whole spa experience. POOLS The skinny pool at the top is the spa's pool, very beautiful but.... we loved the pool at the back of the property. This hidden pool has a stocked bar, wonderful place to just relax. EXPLORING/SPORTS We went for a hike and used the map given to us, had a lot of fun just walking around and exploring. Make sure to look at the shops, they were all very nice and had stuff for everyone. We didn't end up going to the golf course but I did look at it. It was very well maintained and definitely worth the small fees to play or hit balls. Horse riding and the other activities were not on our radar. VINCAFE Perfect place to get food or snacks during the day, we basically tried everything on the menu and you couldn't go wrong on any choice. Great wine selection and a wonderful view to enjoy. ROOM Our room was wonderful! It was classic but had every modern update you could need. The entire room had surround sound for speakers which were awesome! It did have wifi and I'm sure the room had a tv but we never even thought of one because of the countless things you could do here. SERVICE Working in the customer service industry I look at all aspects of service. I have not one complaint of our entire stay here. The staff is onboard with wanting to offer the highest level of customer service and it was wonderful to be treated so well. We had countless times were a staff member went above and beyond their job description to offer the highest level of service. Personal tour's of the houses wine cellar by Leonardo after dinner with recommendations of storing vintages for our wine cellar and hand delivered breakfast 5:30 a.m. for our early departure were just some of the moments that made this place even more memorable. Overall With high expectations, IL BORRO delivered! A castle to yourself ,world renowned wines with Michelin star quality food, and countless activities for all ages make IL Borro once in a life time experience for any guest. If you haven't booked yet and you need some motivation go watch "IL borro > Statue of David" on vimeo. Enjoy!!

We needed a quiet weekend. This restored medieval village certainly gave us peace and quiet. We caught the train to Arezzo from Firenze then after a look around Arezzo, took a taxi to il Borro. Check in was friendly and efficient. Our room was spacious and quiet with all amenities. We took a wine tour but we are not big wine drinkers, I had a great massage then on our way to dinner we visited the artisan workshops. Dinner in the Bistro was good quality and good service. The resort is quiet and we slept very comfortably in the beautiful bed. Great shower in the expansive bathroom. Breakfast was great with maximum choice to meet all needs. We set off for a long walk through San Augustino Valdarno before ordering a taxi at around 1pm to go back to Arezzo. Had lunch in town then took the train back to Florence well rested.
