If you prefer to stay in a towering, elegant, modern old world style hotel with feather beds and a five star rating as well as five star service, check into the The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. Elegant rooms overlook a marina. Readers of Condé Nast Traveler contend it is one of the best places in the world to stay. That would make this hotel truly special. It features a huge, delightful, opulent spa which promises to provide the visitor with the "soothing, ever-present rhythm of the ocean." It includes treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and relaxation lounges. Located on 11 acres, the Ritz-Carlton Resort includes a private club on the white-sand beaches of nearby Lido Key as well as an 18 hole championship golf course, located a little more than a dozen miles away. Often listed as one of the top 10 golf courses in America, it was designed by Tom Fazio. The Ritz-Carlton is close to downtown Sarasota and all that goes on there, as well as the galleries, shops, and restaurants of St. Armand's Circle. It is difficult to describe all that the Ritz-Carlton offers its pampered guests. Those who stay there will undoubtedly talk (brag) about the experience for years to come.

Cafe Continental Patisserie

Cafe Continental Patisserie

  • Siesta Key, 34242

Sarasota's Siesta Kay is blessed with enough hotels, rental condos and rental houses as well as a sufficient number of excellent restaurants to keep vacationers happy for weeks.  One favorite place to eat breakfast, brunch or lunch is the Patisserie Continental Cafe, which is relatively new. Run by an English couple, they offer Continental fare. Enjoy a variety of delicious dishes including a Belgian waffle, American style eggs, or an English breakfast plate that keeps one feeling happily full well into the afternoon. That meal includes crisp bacon, sausage, eggs (any style), delicious sauteed chunks of mushrooms, a perfectly buttered English Muffin, and half of a perfectly braised tomato. Salt to taste and then sit back and savor your food. Their luncheon soups are homemade. There is parking in front of the cafe and adjacent shops, and more free parking around the corner off Canal Road. Possibly a tad hard to find, the Patisserie Continental Cafe is just across from the Seven Eleven on Ocean Boulevard.

If the Ritz-Carlton Hotel has a strong competitor in Sarasota, it is the Hyatt Regency, located at 1000 Boulevard of the Arts, in the heart of the city's renowned cultural district. Known for its excellent water views, The Hyatt recently has undergone $22 million in renovations, including new carpets, 32 inch flat screen TVs, luxurious linens on the bed with other improvements to its 294 guest rooms. The good news, rates also are a bit more modest than at its high end competitor. Recent guests report the four star Hyatt Regency service remains superlative, as could be expected. Stroll from the lobby down to the theater, enjoy the pool with its waterfall, ride the complimentary shuttle to the beach, or spend a morning shopping at St. Armand's Circle. If you arrive by water, call ahead and dock your yacht in the hotel's 32 slip marina, which can  accommodate 55 foot yachts. You may want to wander through the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens with their magnificent collection of orchids. Or visit the Concierge desk to arrange for 18 holes of golf, to spend a day fishing in the Gulf or to stretch your legs on a rental bicycle.

Sea Spray Resort

Sea Spray Resort

While highly praised by elite visitors, when one drives by the Sea Spray Resort isn't exactly what one would call impressive. It would be fair to say it is a small and rather nondescript, older series of buildings, rather crowded together, some with high walls and small private swimming pools. But it does win the praise of those you would expect to prefer to spend a vacation week in a high rise hotel or in a sleek condo overlooking waves washing across the white Gulf of Mexico beach. With a price very close to $200 a night and booked up for weeks ahead, the Sea Spray Resort must be doing something right. One can walk a few blocks to Siesta Village for a meal or a drink, and the resort is truly a storied "hop, skip and a jump" to the impressive Siesta Beach. If you want to stay there during the high season (winter and early spring) you need to make your reservations well in advance. read more about Sea Spray Resort
