Top 10 Bars and Clubs in France

Destination(s): Cannes

France really has something for everyone when it comes to bars and clubs, which range from small, decade-old cafes in the bohemian quarters of Paris, to hip and contemporary Lyon clubs and good old Irish pubs that are very successful all over the country. If your budget allows it, you should definitely have a go at one of the clubs in Cannes, with the best DJs and a very posh crowd to take you through the night. One of the best places in Bordeaux is the Spanish Bodega Bodega, which comes with very original decor and great tapas and Sangria - a perfect alternative if you get tired of the local wines or the great Guinness they serve at Le Connemara. A cool Parisian crowd of young artists and hipsters gathers every weekend at the jazzy Caveau de la Huchette, while locals and tourists alike fancy the great atmosphere at Lyon's Q-Boat. read more about Top 10 Bars and Clubs in France

Located in the historic area of Old Lyon - on the tourist brimming Rue Saint Jean – Saint James Irish Pub is the place to go for a taste of the emerald isles in the heart of Lyon. The Victorian interior of this friendly pub fits well with the old cobbled streets of Saint Jean, so you won't ruin an Old Lyon experience by stopping off here for a drink. You can even order a glass of local wine if you're worried you might lose the French touch, or you can choose from a fine selection of Irish whiskeys, international and Irish draught beers and stouts, including (of course) Guinness by the half or full pint.

Saint James' opens late morning or early afternoon and stays open until 3am over the weekend. The clientele is generally a cheery mix of local students, tourists, expats and travelling business people. The bar staff speak English and French (French spoken with an Irish accent is a real attraction of the bar), so Saint James' is a great place to go if you're getting tired of your French not being understood by the locals.

If you get bored of coffee and croissant for breakfast while you're in Lyon, you can get a full Irish breakfast from Saint James' Irish Pub that will prepare you well for a day of discovery in the Old Town. In true Irish style, breakfast includes a plate crowded with sausage, beans, tomato, egg, mushrooms, black pudding and toast, all for 9€ or 11€ including coffee and juice. read more about The Saint James Irish Pub

Q-Boat

Q-Boat

  • 17 Quai Augagneur
  • tel:+33 4 7284 9898
  • Lyon, 69003

Moored on the bank of the river Rhône, at the smartly renovated Quai Victor Augagneur, the Q-boat is in a prime location for getting noticed. Quai Victor Augagneur, which begins under the central Pont de la Guillotiére, is a hotspot for riverside activity, particularly in the spring and summer months when the place comes alive with outdoor musical performances, street art and even the odd public film viewing. The Q-boat, formerly called 'The Fish', provides a swanky terraced area during the day when the weather is good. This is a great place to sit back and watch the action of the quay while enjoying a drink or a light meal. By night, the Q-boat opens its spacious interior and turns up the volume attracting Lyon's young clubbers, who come to dance the night away to house and techno music. Entrance is free, but the bar is a bit pricey. read more about Q-Boat
