Lanikai Beach, which consistently ranks among the world's top beaches, is known for its clear, turquoise water and expanse of soft white sand. This is one of the island's best beaches for tranquil waters and swimming. The two small islands sitting offshore are the Mokuluas, and are protected bird sanctuaries. North Mokulua is open to the public during the day and accessible by kayak, making for a perfect day trip. read more about Lanikai Beach (Mokulua's)

If you're coming to Oahu, at least once during your visit, you must make your way to Waikiki. Take off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the warm, golden sand. The two-mile stretch of beach along Kalakaua Avenue is home to some iconic hotels and monuments such as the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Duke Kahanamoku statue, and the ghostly Nattatorium War Memorial. If you're feeling particularly daring, ask a beach boy for a surf lesson at Queen's or Canoes. As the sun sets, make your way to Duke's Restaurant and Barefoot Bar for a cocktail and to watch the longboarders catch peaceful rides to shore. Then, if you have energy, enjoy the nightlife at the Skybar, Rumors, or any of Waikiki's several night clubs and bars. read more about Waikiki

Laniakea Turtles (Malama Na Honu)

Laniakea Turtles (Malama Na Honu)

Laniakea Beach, just a few miles north of Haleiwa town, is well known to surfers, but is also a favorite spot for viewing resting 'honu' (Hawaiian green sea turtles) in their natural habitat. These resident honu pull up to the beach to bask in the balmy Hawaiian climate. The novelty of seeing these majestic and serene animals in their natural surroundings, swimming and feeding within inches of the shoreline and enjoying the beach, attracts tourists and island residents alike. read more about Laniakea Turtles (Malama Na Honu)

Typically regarded as the most famous and terrifying wave in the world, the Banzai Pipeline breaks over a shallow coral reef and frequently tosses riders over its thick, neck-breaking lip during the winter months. "Pipe," as it is known to locals, provides an extremely dangerous yet entertaining spectacle when the swell is just right. Indeed, there is a very real and very dangerous aspect to surfing Pipe, but it is also the site of the last of three events in the Triple Crown of Surfing, which should not be missed if you are visiting the North Shore in December. read more about Ehukai Beach Park
