The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra — A Destination Too Often Treated as a Stopover

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

The Oberoi Amarvilas is as close as one can come to staying within the Taj Mahal without actually doing so — a palatial retreat overlooking one of the world’s most enduring monuments in a city defined almost entirely by it. Agra is, for most visitors, a day trip. Of those who choose to stay overnight, the vast majority limit themselves to a single night — a decision that feels unnecessarily rushed. Amarvilas is not merely a base from which to visit the Taj Mahal; it is a sanctuary in its own right. A stay of at least two nights allows time to absorb the property’s tranquil rhythm, enjoy its beautifully manicured gardens — filled with the Oberoi’s signature bougainvillea — and explore nearby landmarks such as the Agra Fort without haste. The hotel’s defining feature is, unsurprisingly, its uninterrupted view of the Taj Mahal, visible from virtually every corner of the property. The experience begins the moment one enters reception, where the monument appears perfectly framed across a stretch of greenery. For the best private views, rooms on the higher floor are strongly recommended, and opting for a balcony is well worth it. The gardens and pool area reinforce the sense of calm. Meticulously maintained and visually anchored by the Taj in the distance, they offer a rare contrast to the intensity outside the gates — a place where time slows down, which is precisely why a one-night stay rarely does the property justice. The Taj Mahal Experience — Where the Hotel Truly Excels The hotel’s location offers a meaningful logistical advantage. Guests are driven by golf cart to the East Gate, avoiding the 500–600 metre walk required from most other hotels where vehicles are not permitted. For early risers, the Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise, though queues begin forming at least an hour earlier. The hotel thoughtfully serves coffee and croissants from 5 a.m. for those heading out at dawn. Given that the Taj Mahal is the central purpose of most visits, a more proactive approach from reception in guiding guests through the practicalities would elevate the experience further — ticket booking (ideally online), optimal visiting times (sunrise, sunset, and full moon when permitted), and practical do’s and don’ts. The rules are not always intuitive: preferably no bags, certainly no tripods or additional lighting, and visits are often capped at around three hours due to crowd control. The monument is also closed on Fridays. There is also a broader context to Agra worth noting. Following directives from the Supreme Court of India in the 1990s aimed at protecting the Taj Mahal from pollution, many local industries were forced to close or relocate, leading to widespread job displacement. Today, the city relies heavily on tourism and traditional crafts — a reality that is visible in the constant presence of guides, vendors and photographers around the monument. Hotel tip: One additional refinement would be for the hotel to enquire whether guests plan an early morning visit and, if so, ensure that rooms are serviced promptly upon their return. After a pre-dawn start, coming back to a freshly made room would be a particularly welcome touch — and entirely in keeping with the Oberoi philosophy at its best. Rooms — Charm, Space, and a Touch of Time Travel Built over 25 years ago, the property is remarkably well preserved. That said, the rooms themselves remain largely unchanged since opening. While they carry a certain nostalgic charm — particularly for those returning after many years — some details feel dated. Simple elements, such as the absence of a master light switch beside the bed, mean that one ends the evening switching off lights one by one. Hallway lighting, too, feels somewhat basic compared to the elegance of the rest of the hotel. WiFi is another weak point. It proved somewhat unreliable, and the option to pay extra for faster connectivity feels misaligned with expectations at this level. In today’s environment, seamless internet is not a premium feature — it is a basic requirement. Dining — Relaxed, Reliable, with One Constraint Breakfast is served on the ground floor overlooking the pool. The setting is pleasant, though too low to capture views of the Taj Mahal. The selection is generous, and the kitchen is flexible in accommodating individual preferences. Breakfast service is excellent —attentive and quietly efficient. We also dined at Bellevue, the all-day restaurant, which also serves as the indoor breakfast venue. The online imagery understates it — in reality, the atmosphere is far more inviting and the food very good. A seafood risotto ordered by our daughter would not have felt out of place in Italy, while traditional Indian dishes were equally satisfying. The alternative, Esphahan, offers a more formal fine-dining experience, though it does not admit guests under 18 — a somewhat limiting policy for those staying multiple nights with family. Overall Conclusions Service overall, while consistently courteous, does not always reach the level one expects from the brand and at times feels less polished than in other Oberoi properties. At the pool, towels were initially self-service until staff noticed our arrival. A simple smoothie order took over thirty minutes, requiring several clarifications — including a call to the kitchen to explain a request for almond rather than cow’s milk. A request to reception to rebook the same excellent guide for an afternoon Taj visit also took longer than expected to materialize. Part of this may be explained by the rhythm of the hotel itself. The reception area is often very busy, with a steady flow of arrivals and departures — many guests stopping briefly en route to the Taj Mahal. At times, this gives the hotel a more transient atmosphere than one might expect from a property of this calibre. One cannot help but feel the hotel is somewhat conditioned to short stays — efficient enough for a one-night visit, but less attuned to guests who linger. Ironically, the property itself is perfectly suited to longer stays. A shift in positioning — from stopover to destination — could elevate both the guest experience and operational flow, while reducing strain on the property. The Oberoi Amarvilas ultimately offers something very few hotels in the world can: a direct, uninterrupted relationship with one of the most iconic landmarks ever built. And for those who choose to stay long enough, that privilege reveals itself in full.

The Hotel was amazing, the overall ambiance is pure luxury. I understood it to be a 5 star hotel, but I'm ready to give it 10 stars. The view of the Taj Mahal from the suite bedroom was the icing on the cake for me. I totally enjoyed the stay. The massage is a must indulgence, that you owe it to yourself to get. Overall the stay was a 10/10....who knew!

The best. Bar none.

Perfectly located as the closest proper hotel to the Taj and with jaw dropping views of this special monument from every room the Oberoi could be forgiven for resting on its considerable locational advantages. But I can say without fear of hyperbole that the service at the Oberoi is every bit as special as its views. Service is a state of mind - and the best know just when to intervene and when not to. The Oberoi delivers on all fronts - with outstanding and proactive service delivered from every member of staff from top to bottom. Special mention to Arpan whose boundless passion for his job and generosity of spirit were infectious and genuinely made a substantial positive impact on our stay at this magical hotel. With the very grateful thanks. Dan & Rachel Heron.

Beyond expectations

I hardly know where to begin. This is my first review of any Oberoi property, having stayed at several during our trip (Delhi, Jaipur, and now Agra). I’ll start with Agra, because the Taj Mahal is undeniably India’s most iconic sight—and The Oberoi Amarvilas is, hands down, the most perfect place to stay while experiencing it. From the moment we arrived, we felt like royalty. The welcome at the entrance was warm and flawless: smiling staff greeted us curbside, and as soon as we stepped inside, we were adorned with beautiful flower garlands. Then, to top it off, we were led to the stunning balcony overlooking the Taj Mahal itself, where a welcome drink was waiting for us. Pure magic. There’s no way I can thank everyone individually in a short review, but I have to highlight a few people who made this stay extraordinary: - General Manager Mr. Rohit Kukreja - Mr. Apran Rawal - Mr. Ripudaman Yadav - Ms. Jublee at the front desk - Rohit Sharma from housekeeping - The wonderful waitstaff who made our private balcony dinner an unforgettable romantic evening (highly recommend this for couples!) …and so many others I’m surely forgetting. You are the heart of what makes The Oberoi Amarvilas feel like true six-star hospitality. A special shout-out also goes to our incredible Agra guide, Mr. Kishore Gupta, recommended by Oberoi. He’s a true gem—deeply knowledgeable, extremely professional, born and raised in Agra, and a master at managing time and logistics. If you’re visiting Agra, do yourself a favor and request him—you won’t regret it. And I can’t finish without mentioning our fantastic driver, Mr. Girwar, who was with us the entire journey through Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. An absolute gentleman, an excellent driver, and just a wonderful human being. Finally, huge thanks to Mr. Mohit at Exotic Vacations, who flawlessly planned and coordinated our entire trip. To everyone we’ve mentioned (and those we unintentionally missed)—thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You made us feel truly special and deeply happy. This isn’t goodbye—it’s “see you again soon.” Namaste. 🙏
