Our first stop in CR as we arrived late afternoon after a long flight from the UK. They arranged for a car to pick us up - probably more than we would have paid in a taxi at $33 but an easy start to our stay. The hotel has a stunning look out back towards SJ, high up in the hills, and overlooking a large garden. All the rooms seem to look out over the same view and our room was huge with a large and fairly private balcony/patio. I would not say its a posh hotel but it comes with 2 pools and a spa. The restaurant looks out over the valley and you see the lights of SJ in the evening. Service was excellent we thought the servers were very friendly and professional. Food was very good as well which is helpful as there didn't seem to be any other local choices. If you have time there are some walks to the small waterfalls in the grounds. The only disappointment was staying for 1 night.

We stayed here on the first night of our holiday to Costa Rica. The grounds are amazing to walk around the views are stunning. My children loved the sunset pool and jacuzzi. We ate in the restaurant in the evening where the staff were very pleasant and helpful and the food was lovely. Breakfast was a small selection but was nice. We especially liked the home made granola bars and banana bread. The only downsides for me were that there were not enough towels provided at the pool and we also only had two towels in our room. Check in was also a bit slow as a few of us who were all on the same flight had arrived st the same time. I would also recommend taking ear plugs as you can hear the planes flying overhead and we were woken several times in the night by dogs barking. However, these are only minor points and I would definitely recommend this place for a quick stopover if you are arriving into San Jose as it is only 25 minutes by far from the airport.

Xandari is a lovely, upscale resort with great service. All of the staff was super - gracious and friendly and after a week they felt more like friends than simply hotel staff. We were looking for a place to relax and this was perfect! We had a very spacious prima plus villa close to the reception and restaurant and delighted in the beautiful garden paths and musical serenades provided by birds and crickets. There are three pools, which we did not use, as we simply enjoyed lounging on our large veranda with its wonderful vista. The grounds are beautiful, but for those with mobility issues, we would not recommend exploring, especially down to the waterfalls. My husband did go down the hill while I was at the spa and even though he is very fit, it was a challenge, as there are about 325 steps down to see four of the waterfalls and another 60 or so after another extension from the main trail to the largest of the falls. The spa has a wide variety of services, and the treatment rooms are individual jalapas with a view that overlooks the beautiful Central Valley. It is a downhill walk from the main area, but for the return, one can get a ride back in a golf cart. The restaurant also has a beautiful view of the Valley, and for most of our meals we sat in the covered open terrace. The included continental breakfast was much more than the basic fruit, baked goods, and coffee, and the lunch and dinner menus have a good selection, but are somewhat overpriced for some items. While Xandari is a bit removed from the town of Alajuela and we would have enjoyed a bit more variety for restaurants, we will definitely be returning.

We loved Xandari so much the first time we stayed here that we returned for a second visit. It's perfect for a first or last night's stay in Costa Rica since the location is only about twenty minutes from the airport. They were late picking us up at the airport, but the relaxation began the minute we stepped onto the property. Our villa was spacious and beautiful with a king-sized bed, a large patio area with one lounge chair and a small table with chairs, a gorgeous view, a nice bathroom with shower, and even a mini refrigerator stocked with complimentary bottled water, sodas, fruit drinks, and snacks. There's no air conditioning, but we didn't miss it. Lots of nice little details like bathrobes, a room safe, and a blow dryer were also included. We had a wonderful dinner in the beautiful open air restaurant, and the view of the Central Valley below was stunning. Our waiter was very kind, and the service was excellent. Temperatures were very moderate when we were there, and we were able to get out and explore the trails, orchards, gardens, and small waterfalls on the grounds. The landscaping, colorful buildings, and cool architecture make this a beautiful, luxurious modern retreat. The next morning we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast which included hot items like scrambled eggs and gallo pinto, as well as tropical fruits and juices, and a number of homemade baked goods. We had met the architect/owner the last time we stayed here and were sorry to hear that he has passed away, but what a wonderful legacy he has left behind. This place is very special, and we feel lucky that we had the opportunity to stay here.
