We initially chose Xandari for its proximity to the airport. Airport hotels are very expensive in San Juan. We chose Xandari 25 minutes away and were very pleased! What we loved: This is a safe, comfortable property, beautiful gardens, 3 pools, jacuzzi and walking paths, lovely rooms and jaw dropping views. Golf cart service will transport you up to the restaurant if desired. Mini-bar has juice, water, coffee, snacks, all free! The rooms have a sort of kitchenette, w a sink, plates, glasses, cups and cutlery. The little fridge has a small freezer with ice, which we loved. Rooms have divine rear patios with chaise lounges and views of the city/valley. The private front gardens can also be enjoyed from the large glass showers, making you very close to nature. The hotel was initially owned by Americans, the wife was an artist. Her kitschy art is evident throughout the property, with a prominent palette of rainbow colors. The walls inside and out are rainbow, tile is rainbow, decor items are rainbow. It’s bright and fun, if you love color. Lots of nice detail in each room, books to share, comfy beds, robes provided. The Lavender/Mint lotion is fabulous and I was sad to learn it wasn’t for sale. Please add it for purchase! I know many reviewers have been critical of the complimentary breakfast. We enjoyed it very much, scrambled eggs have been added. It’s well beyond a standard continental breakfast! One morning we shared an omelette (for purchase) and it was awesome. Amaurice our dinner waiter prepared a tonic for my stuffy nose-honey, lime and salt, his grandmother’s recipe. That and his kindness helped me feel much better. Staff were all very attentive. We requested a power strip for CPAP machines and it was promptly provided. What we didn’t love: The neighbor’s non-stop barking dogs, primarily affecting the rooms near the spa and front gate. I’m sorry to have to even mention this, but I feel responsible for my fellow travelers. It’s really not something the hotel can solve, I realize. If you’re a light sleeper, get earplugs or request a room higher-up near the restaurant. I saw several of the rooms. Some have apparently been updated, others are in need of it. Paint in some of the bathrooms is looking really tired and chipped. More disturbing was our shower-ugh. The maid service is adequate and everything is clean, but the shower tile/grout looks pretty nasty and dingy. Regrouting might be the answer to freshen up the nice large bath areas. Why are there no paper towels in the lil kitchenette? With dishes and a service sink, please, they’re necessary. Love the lil fridge/freezer but a microwave would make the set-up much more functional for longer stays. The Wi-Fi is not a problem in the upper rooms, but a huge issue in the lower rooms. When we complained a supplemental router (?) was promptly delivered and immediately fixed the issue. As the problem is very well known, it’s puzzling and frustrating that a router isn’t already being provided in lower rooms. My final nit and it’s a big one: no real hangers in the closets. Please, please replace those horrible faux breakaway hangers! I wanted to hang a garment nearer the shower for steaming but absolutely couldn’t do it. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t hate those non-hangers. They are only found in really crummy, budget hotels and of course, this property is much, much better than that. Lots to love about the Xandari and it’s likely we will return. Some rooms are looking a bit tired and I’m sure refurbishment can be expected. The hotel, restaurant and pools are beautiful, the vast gardens expertly manicured. The location is awesome! A nearby MUST SEE is the Toucan Rescue Ranch about 1/2 hr away. Have a personal visit with Sloths, Birds, otters, wild cats etc being treated/rehabilitated there, don’t miss it! The Paz waterfall park is also fabulous, maybe 90 minutes away. Hope to enjoy the Xandari spa next visit. The great staff and our room’s delightful patio really made our stay relaxing and enjoyable. We will be back soon!

The room was very spacious, staffs were helpful... Up in the mountain area so quiet and peaceful . Beautiful trails with 5 water falls inside the hotel area . I would give 5 star for the facility but overall 4 star....restaurant food wasn't that good for the price and the deep tissue massage was a disappointment for both of us.

Great room and facilities but the restaurant made me disappointed, poorly seasoned and not very well presented or cooked. Serves other cuts of meat instead of tenderloin for example. When I asked why they said they were sorry and filled up my glass of wine but still charged full price.

I spend the most amazing week at Xandari over Christmas. It was a time of relaxation, reflection and finding yourself. The nature is all around you with so many beautiful waterfalls and gardens to explore. The pools were intimate and picturesque and the spa was incredible with individual huts with private views of the ocean and outdoor whirlpools. Xandari is an incredible place not only for it's wonderful creative rooms, and excellent meals and fantastic location, but because of its staff who invited me into their home. I will be back again...and again!

This hotel is closer to the international airport than central San Jose. IMO it makes more sense to stay here than travel into the capital, which to be honest is pretty ugly and should be avoided. the Xandari has exceptional rooms and gardens. We had an entry-level room that was massive with a balcony and a great sunset view. You can hike to three waterfalls - see attached pic of the largest one. It's quite a steep climb so only for the reasonably fit. The gardens are beautiful. We spent our first day just wandering around the hotel grounds and covered over 10km. There are 3 pools with jacuzzis, one is a sunset pool. Whilst our room rate was great, beware the food and drink costs. The food was good, but you are paying over the odds. I resent paying London prices where the costs are obviously lower. $7 for the local Imperial lager when it’s $3-4 everywhere in the country is taking the mickey. Good cold healthy breakfasts are included, but you had to pay extra for hot items. The food/drink costs have lost you a point.
