We have stayed at Xandari and our recent stay reinforced our prior opinion that this is the best option for a short stay after arriving in CR and before returning home after enjoy other sites all over CR. The staff is warm, efficient and helpful. The villa are a delight. The restaurant is excellent and the view throughout the property are stunning. We always enjoy roaming the seemingly endless walkways through the property with beautifully maintained gardens and forests. The 2-3 hour hike to the 5 waterfalls on the property is an adventure we always enjoy although more challenging with the passing years.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel on arrival in Costa Rica at the suggestion of our travel agent as we aren't keen on city hotels but our flight from the UK was due to arrive too late in the afternoon for us to travel directly to the Pacific coast. We originally thought we would visit the Poas volcano nearby but it's unstable at the moment so closed. Instead we spent a hugely enjoyable day exploring the trails in the grounds of the hotel, hiking down to the river view points and then along to the various waterfalls. It's a tough hike rather than a gentle walk due to the steepness of the valley and numerous steps but taking our time it took around 2 hours. Plenty of beautiful butterflies as a distraction! Higher up around the hotel itself the gardens are beautiful and attract numerous colourful birds (ask for their checklist if you are a bird watcher). We stayed in villa 17 which was very spacious and comfortable with that lovely view over the valley. We could see the planes taking off at the airport but our surroundings felt a world away. We could sometimes hear dogs barking in the distance as referred to in some previous reviews but it wasn't too intrusive to keep us awake. On our second evening we used the spa and booked a couples massage preceded by half an hour in a private jacuzzi at sunset with that vast view in front and with a glass of wine each. Wonderful way to relax after a long haul flight. We also enjoyed the heated sunset pool - sharing it with swallows/swifts? who were flocking to dip in to drink as they flew across. Facilities seemed quiet perhaps because most guests only spend a night here in transit. Food was good and the restaurant terrace is an attractive spot. The hotel sits on its own so there's nowhere else obvious to eat unless you take a taxi back to the suburbs.. The first night we just had a starter each as we were shattered after the travelling but their shrimp cocktail was huge compared to anything you would see in England. Their shrimps were enormous. Breakfast was a nice buffet plus a menu of dishes you could order at extra cost but scrambled eggs and the Costa Rican staple of rice and beans were included so we stuck to that with cold meat and cheese and fruit. There was also bread and cake. We also had lunch and dinner that day and the menu offered a good selection and it was good quality and nicely presented. Our only minor issue was that the reception seemed understaffed when we arrived at 6pm with just one member of staff handling 5 couples checking in at the same time plus other guest queries. They were very courteous and it didn't take too long but we were second in the queue. Otherwise a great choiice for our first experience in Costa Rica and with the temperature around 25c coming from 0c in the U.K. It was a good way to acclimatise before we faced 35c on the Pacific coast further south!

We have stayed in a lot of spectacular hotels around the world. The Xandari Resort & Spa is one of my favorites now, by far. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. The staff was great, the food was great, the grounds were magnificent and Katherine in the spa gave me the best pedicure that I have ever had! We actually tried to change our flight for a couple more days so as to stay longer. Best night in Costa Rica after 6 weeks of being there

This hotel is not far from Alajuela so it makes a perfect place to stay after getting into the country. We stayed 2 nights before heading to Guanacaste province and couldn't have picked a better place. A contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city, it is peaceful and quiet. The villas are very spacious and overlook the city below which offers a nice backdrop for relaxing on your own veranda, especially at night. Food excellent, staff very courteous and helpful. I would definitely recommend to anyone for staying at the beginning and end of a trip to Costa Rica, or as a base from which to explore areas such as Volcan Poas, LaPaz waterfalls, etc. We didn't use the spa but with that as an amenity it could serve also as a destination. We hiked the trails to the resort's waterfalls and I wouldn't refer to them as a walk as much as a hike. Hike is definitely worth it! This seems more of an adult resort with the relaxing atmosphere and spa.

We stayed here for the first 3 nights of our trip to Costa Rica. In retrospect i would also have liked to stay here at the end as well, It would have made a stunning finale and has the perfect situation of being 20 minutes from the airport yet feels, quiet, private with awesome views over the central valley. The gardens and the architecture were for us the standout features. Beautiful room, artfully decorated with a small kitchenette, bedroom/sitting room and a balcony to die for overlooking the upper gardens. we spent half a day walking the grounds, following the trails to the waterfalls, seeing the orchard, the animals and the vegetable and herb gardens. Yes, all of this within the hotel grounds. We counted 3 pools in the grounds (but there could be more!). The sunset pool is the most beautiful and you can decent lengths in it whilst admiring that view. The service was absolutely fine. We arrived after a 25 hour journey to discover our agent had made a mistake with the booking and we weren't expected for another 2 days. No problem. Another room was found and was immediately ready. Dining. The breakfast was continental and cooked was extra. This wasn't the case in other hotels we stayed in, but it wasn't an issue to us as we don't major on full cooked breakfasts. The home made granola bars were a delight and the fresh fruit lovely. Dinners. No issues. Overall experience. Brilliant. Lovely relaxed atmosphere for such a stunningly beautiful hotel.
