This is a very beautiful oasis that puts you in the feel of being one with nature. We stayed in one of the ultra villas (room 22) which is the best set up in my opinion. Fresh air always. There is no AC and it is perfect without it. We loved every moment. The food was spectacular. And I would like to highlight Oscar, who was our server, as he was very hospitable and a great overall host during breakfast and dinner. Make sure to walk the trails on the property. It is a beautiful property with nice trails and waterfalls. If you are not used to being in a higher altitude, please prepare your body to adjust to walking distances as getting winded faster could happen. Again this is peace and reconnecting to nature and self at its finest. Open the patio doors and listen to nature’s orchestra.

Relaxing spot outside of San Jose

Lovely, quiet, relaxing. A great starting point for the rest of our upcoming adventures. Lovely private villa with view over the jungle and town. Huge bed. Private deck. Dinner in the veranda of the restaurant was beautiful. We enjoyed the waterfall walks and the 3rd infinite pool with views was especially delightful.

Good for the airport but inconsistent facilities

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We stayed for just one night before we flew home. Our check in, after a long drive from Monteverde, was smooth and efficient and came with a complimentary and welcome coffee. However, that feeling of welcome was slightly undermined almost immediately when we informed that we had to make reservations for dinner and breakfast, which tends to signal that the waiting staff and kitchen might struggle if you just do what you want and appear for meals when it suits you rather than the staff. Reservations don’t seem to matter at lunch when we just asked for a table and was given one with no issues. Even giving a reservation time seemed to test the kitchen as at all three mealtimes we ate in the restaurant it took some time for the food to appear. The meals were good but nothing exceptional. They were also relatively pricey. The view over San Jose and the airport from the restaurant is fantastic though. Breakfast was Costa Rican themed, with plantains, Gallo Pinto and eggs brought to your table, and a good buffet of fruit, juice, pastries and cereal. The grounds of the Xandari Resort were nice, with different gardens and pools, you get a great view from the Sunset Pool. We walked the jungle trails to see the waterfalls and it’s a real workout, with lots of stairs, uneven and slippery paths and hot, humid conditions. There is a lot of insect and birdlife. The grounds also support the ecological theme of the hotel with vegetable and salad grown on site and a henhouse. There is a small gift shop in Reception and a small TV Room. Most of the staff seem to speak very good English. Our room had a big patio balcony overlooking San Jose so you can spend a lot of time watching the planes taking off and landing at the international airport, the planes leaving fly right over the hotel, and the natural flying from the birds that settle in the trees in front of your room. Or room was huge with a minbar with complimentary snacks and juice, a safe, good Wi-Fi, no TV but drinkable water, a large wardrobe and lots and lots of room. There were lots of sockets and chairs, tea and coffee and glasses. The artwork is very bold, bordering on the psychedelic, but waking up bathed in light from stained glass windows in the room was nice. There were downsides to the room. If bugs are not your thing you will struggle here as our room had a variety of insects from beetles to a huge millipede in it that we had to deal with and humanely remove. The bathroom was bizarre, with no doors other than on the separate toilet and no ceiling. It was built like it should be outdoors, with an open shower. None of the windows were frosted, we were told not to worry as no one could see us (the room had a sort of front garden with a high wall and lockable gate, so we had to trust this was true. The biggest pain about our stay was the set of double doors by the shower as they blew open twice in the windy night with huge bangs both times, rudely waking us up. The catch was evidently not secure on them. The bathroom area also had a good sink and the wardrobe plus for no real reason, making getting ready more hassle than it needed to be as I tried to retrieve dry clothes or valuables at the same time that my wife was trying to shower and vice versa. Really inconvenient. The bed in the room was really soft and saggy and needed a new mattress. Our flight was after check out time, we asked for a late check out, but we were told this was not possible as the hotel was full. Instead, we were told we could shower at the spa. We tried the night before departure and the day of departure to find someone at the spa who could show us the showers, but no one was there, and it was all locked. After a couple of attempts of trying to find someone by the Spa (the Xandari Resort is built on a steep slope where the Spa is downhill and Reception at the top) we gave up and went back to Reception to ask if someone could give us access to the Spa after check out so we could shower before flying home. A different receptionist told us we could not use the Spa, it was for Spa bookings only, staff were only present when appointments were made (so if you have a sudden impulse for a facial or massage forget it- it was unclear where the Spa staff were if you decided to make an appointment at short notice). Instead, we were told to go further down the hill to the Sunset Pool, where there was a shower with soap and shampoo (only true in the Gents as my wife said there wasn’t any in the Ladies) shower there, taking the pool towels from the room we had vacated (which we did with no issue) and we could get a golf cart back up to Reception, so we didn’t undermine or showering. We realised when we got to the pool that there were no staff or phone around to summon a cart so we walked back up the hill, got very warm and undermined our having a shower before our flight. The Lobby has no air conditioning so if you wait there you get very warm unless there is a breeze. Considering all the Europeans and half the Americans at the Resort were waiting to be picked up and taken to the airport, the Xandari Resort could become a real favourite by having an area available where people could shower and change in the cool before the airport, leave their bags etc., because the spa/pool/lobby alternative is not a great one. The location of the Xandari Resort is quite isolated, there are no shops, restaurants etc. nearby. The airport is a 25-45 minute drive though, depending on traffic, so it is convenient to stay there at the start or end of your trip.

We love Xandari. You have the perfect combination of elegance and comfort, without the pretension and over solicitousness of other comparable hotels.

You have created wonder and magic, and have topped it off with a friendly and gracious staff.

We have never been to a place where the imprint of human creativity is so well balanced with the beauty of nature.

My experience at Xandari has been more than value...it's about personal warmth and touch. Gentility is a rare treasure in the service industry. Costa Rica offers this on many levels and Xandari exceeds it.

“Travel Dates: March 24-28, 2013 Room: Villa 3 We are from the States. We chose Xandari based upon ratings from the trip advisor website, its proximity to the San Jose airport and its centrally located position (w/r/t to the country as a whole). We chose to rent a vehicle (easy to drive in Costa Rica as long as u have a 4x4 vehicle and a GPS)- would recommend limited night time driving. Xandari was an oasis set on the hillside with beautiful views of San Jose. The first night we arrived, we were greeted by the bellman and hotel desk staff. We were quickly whisked away to our room. We had an Ultra villa, which was more than enough room for me and my wife. The room had a small collection of ants near the screen door (my wife is terrified of bugs so this was more of an issue for her). The staff was extremely apologetic and quickly made arrangements to transfer us to another room. They did so within 15 minutes and we failed to have another complaint. Service at the restaurant was great, especially given the laissez-faire attitudes of most Costa-Ricans. The grounds were well maintained. The staff was extremely attentive and responsive to any request. The rooms were cleaned well by the maids. The bed, at least in my unit, was comfortable. Things to note: No air-condition, but they do have fans upon request (it gets quite cool at night, so this wasn't a significant issue for us). No TVs in the room, but they do have one in the main house (more of an issue if u like to keep up on your sports, etc while on vacation). Mild-moderate amount of insects outside of your rooms, but keep in mind the resort is set in a hill side jungle, replete with water falls, etc so this should be expected”
