NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi in Amalfi Salerno, Italy

Seemingly molded into the side of a jagged cliffside is the Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi – part of the LVX collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Teetering high above the Amalfi Coast, this former 13th-century monastery is now a glorious hotel situated along the Italian seaboard. Impeccably restored to its original splendor, yet not without expected conveniences, the Grand Hotel features just 53 tasteful rooms and suites with a white motif and latte accents. French doors push open revealing Juliet-style balconies encased with ornate iron balustrades and million-dollar seascape views. The hotel's crisp alabaster color scheme is infused with brilliant hues courtesy of blooming bougainvillea, leafy emerald plants and azure reflections from the sea.

While it is tempting to want to luxuriate behind the doors of your exquisite chamber, there are plenty of public spaces that deserve accolades as well. An infinity-edge pool has a Romanesque feel with a tiled deck, ample-size loungers and incredible ocean vistas. The wellness center features a hammam and an array of spa treatments. There is also an on-site 13th-century Norman-Arab cloister and spectacular loggia with stunning vistas that is a favorite subject of plein air artists. Grand Hotel's Dei Cappuccini restaurant is a wonderful discovery, again with amazing views, coupled with rich, Italian flavors. The hotel's beach is open from the early morning until dusk and features a barefoot bar and restaurant plus complimentary umbrella, sun beds and towels. Among the hotel's many assets is its romantic location. The charming terraced towns, eye-catching confetti-colored buildings, and la dolce vita attitude will stick with you long after you have left this paradisio.

I have to say this is one of the best Hotels I have ever stayed at period! Arriving at a cliff side hotel, with a car where it is very hard to find parking on a narrow two way street can be a challenge , BUT the staff at the NH hotel made it a breeze. From Valet parking to reception to exceptional room service, attention and professionalism; this is a great place to stay.

Pros: Great view of the bay (which we paid extra for) and having breakfast on the terrace is unparalleled. Service is great and hotel is clean and comfy. Spa massages were great. Good location with a short walk down to the town of Amalfi, although not for the faint hearted due to sharing the walk with cars and scooters Cons: Over-priced.

Right from check in you are made to feel special. They do not keep you at a counter waiting to check in, they escort you to the bar area and give you a glass of champagne while they get the paper work, keys and so on. Great way to start off a stay. That is the kind of service you can expect for the entire stay. Having been a convent a long time ago, there is a beautiful active church still within the walls. While we were there a wedding was taking place in the outdoor courtyard area which looks classical as all around it is very old. The entire hotel is perched on the steep hillsides above Amalfi. The entrance off the road is small and tricky for drivers (very small parking area). An elevator wisks you up a number of floors to get you to the hotel itself, then off to another elevator to the reception floor. Then you may be taking a third elevator to the rooms. Not a big deal but necessary with old places like this that were converted. Because of the steep hillside, nearly everything faces the sea. Whether it be most of the rooms, the bar, the restaurant or the pool. Walk past terraces of lemon trees to get to the compact but nice pool area. You can order drinks and sip them in the pool right at the infinity edge. Just hanging out there gazing over the Amalfi harbor and sea itself is very relaxing. Our room was huge. We had a Jr Suite with sea view and large terrace. The terrace itself was twice the size of our large room. Awesome views of course. The bathrooms have been updated; marble, nice but not big shower etc. Bedrooms were very clean, traditional look. Nice but maybe not the best (no real complaint though). The terrace was really spectacular though. Not private as the rooms next to us had a low hedge between the terraces. Did not bother us. It had 2 garden chaise, a table/umbrella with 2 chairs, and a huge 2 person round lounger that was quite comfortable. We had breakfast every morning there and ate dinner once during our stay. All were very good with a nice selection. The service is what set them apart. Everywhere you went EVERYONE was courteous and offered help in an unassuming way. Maritza (I think was her name) was particularly helpful at the front desk. She arranged for a car service from Positano when all buses were full and no ferry service ran. She also arranged for a private boat hire for a day which was fantastic - highly recommended (I'll write about that separately). The place may be very expensive (we were there at the height of the season by the looks of it, but it was our 30th anniversary and it was well worth it.

We stayed 2 nights here. Everything about the hotel is perfect. The views, the bathrooms, the architecture and the location. A special mention to Flavia who made our stay that much more special. Can't wait to return!

We have visited NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi for the third time and are still discovering new things. Surprised by the warm welcome by the staff and the wonderful sea view room. The hotel offers a selection of workshops for the guests to attend. We have participated in the pasta workshop (how to make your own pasta), the limoncello workshop (how to make limoncello) and the wine & cheese tasting (tasting of local wines and cheeses). We have enjoyed the workshops from Sous Chef Alfonso, Davide and Sommelier Diego and learned some useful tips and tricks for at home. The best feeling in the world is waking up and opening your window or balcony door and see the sea and the beautiful Amalfi coast. For us this place is magic and we really feel at home in the Convento. There is always a reason to come back to this beautiful hotel, experiencing the true hospitality by the staff and discover new things in the hotel and the entire Amalfi Coast. Grazie mille for an another unforgettable experience e a la prossima! Ciao and best regards, Jochem & Jacqueline
