Reviews for El Pescador
My sister treated me to a wonderful saltwater fly fishing experience. I had a momentous birthday (60) and I'd always wanted to go to Belize for fly fishing. We were delighted with every aspect of our stay at El Pescador, just north of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. My sister is not a fly fisher (or fisher, for that matter) and she STILL had a great time. The amenities at El Pescador are superb. Rooms are very comfortable and the swimming pool and bar are relaxing gathering spots after an intense day of fishing. The meals, served family style, were delicious. (The picnic in the boat was plentiful and yummy- I was so busy fishing, the guide had to encourage me to stop for lunch). We met the very nicest folks: other guests, staff and management, alike. I fished with an excellent guide, Jeo, for two days. He was quite skilled at putting me in the position to catch fish. We waded, stalked and caught bonefish and also blind-casted in channels and caught them, too. He and Isa (fishing director) really helped me with casting. Jeo answered every flora/fauna/historical/cultural question I asked. He found permit and I missed them. I am happy to say that I have been practicing since I've been home and I will be a better caster when I return thanks to his help and hints. Ken, the GM, truly has the well being of his staff at heart. He really seems genuine in his intent to provide his guests a quality experience.
The reviews by others give an accurate picture of El Pescador- I cannot think of much else to add. We were there for 7 nights and chose to have guided fishing on 3 days. This was our first experience of salt water fly fishing. On our “free” days we explored the nearby town of San Pedro, or relaxed at the Lodge, and took a snorkeling trip. The staff were excellent, friendly and professional. The food was delicious so too the packed lunch to have on the boat. The teaching from the manager and the instructor as well as our guide enabled us to be successful and we are looking forward to our next visit. We met many nice people who were not all fishing as meals were eaten family style. We booked through Yellowdog. The Lodge offers two for the price on one at certain times during the year- an offer that can’t be beaten.

Wife and I spent 6 nights, 5 days at El Pescador 1/18 with 4 days guided fishing booked by Orvis Travel. Fly and baitfishing excellent for bonefish, jacks, snappers and almost got several tarpon. Very experienced guide and all tackle provided by lodge. Also snorkled - safe, great fun. All lodge meals very good to excellent, free beer and rum drinks with our package. Room large, comfortable bed, nice bathroom except we were instructed not to flush toilet paper but place soiled toilet paper in trash bag which was collected daily, unlike at least 3 other nearby resorts which do not have this restriction on waste flushing. Staff very, very good - always helpful and friendly. Isa Rodriguez fishing director and Marine, his sister especially wonderful. Limited Wifi only in dining, reception area.
We tried to get into El Pescadr for New Year but left it too late so sadly only had 4 nights but it was still worth it. We did not go full board as we like to try other places to eat and so only ate here twice but meals both times were very good. They did a very good pic-nic for the fishing and breakfast starts at 5.30 so plenty of time to eat before leaving at 6.30. The room was huge (we were in one of the apartment type villas) and had a great view over the beach to the sea. Very comfy bed (firm) and clean room. This was also the only place we stayed where there were mosquito nets over the windows so you could sleep with the windows open. Service was very good and all the staff made you feel welcome. They all wear the same "uniform" with a white T shirt with "El Pescador Family" on it which was good as there was not uniform distinction between the office staff, waitresses and groundsmen so everyone was equal to the guest. Well done for doing that - it made a big difference. We will hopefully be back for more Belizean hospitality and fishing.

El Pescador is a special place. Its focus is certainly fishing, but there is so much more to do (snorkeling, diving, parasailing, exploring the island and mainland, etc.). Don’t expect Ritz-Carlton-style luxury; that’s not what EP is about. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed, but there is a worn-in and rustic appeal to the lodge in general. But what sets EP apart is the staff. EVERYONE is beyond friendly and helpful. In addition, the staff is very detail oriented. You might think there would be an “island time” mentality, but the front desk is on top of all the details that affect your stay. The kitchen doesn’t aim too high, but the food is solid family-style fare that fits the place. And if gluten is somehow an issue, you’re in good hands here. As for the fishing, don’t expect guarantees; flats fishing is notoriously tricky, especially with a fly rod, and the variables are many. But the guides know their stuff, and the flats are beautiful. We were also very impressed by Belize itself, where everyone is friendly, and services and attractions are well run. We will return to El Pescador.
