Member Spotlight: El Pescador Lodge, Belize A Fly Fishers International member testimonial El Pescador has earned its reputation as one of the premier fly fishing destinations in the world, and it's easy to see why. Since 1974, this lodge has built its name on serious access to bonefish, tarpon, and permit across more than 400 square miles of flats, mangrove channels, and lagoons — a legitimate shot at the Grand Slam in one of the most productive saltwater fisheries in the Caribbean. The Fishing This is the standout. Guides are consistently sharp, patient, and genuinely invested in putting anglers on fish — many are second- or third-generation locals who know the tides intimately. Whether you're a first-timer or chasing a Slam, the guides adjust to your skill level on the fly. The Lodge Beachfront setting, colonial-style rooms and multi-bedroom villas, three pools, and an easy, unpretentious island atmosphere. The bar and family-style dinners are where the day's stories get told — it has that everyone-knows-your-name feel. The Staff This is the recurring theme across nearly every guest account: staff and guides treat you like family, remember names after one meeting, and go out of their way to anticipate needs — for anglers and non-fishing companions alike. The Food Fresh, hearty, and well-regarded across the board — local specialties alongside solid breakfast, lunch, and dinner service built around early fishing departures. Bottom Line A world-class, Orvis-endorsed fishery with a genuinely warm, family-run feel — strong for solo anglers, couples, and groups where not everyone fishes. Highly recommended for FFI members planning a Belize trip. Submitted by Robert Uselton, Fly Fishers International

El Pescador has carved out a real niche for itself. Its combination of comfortable and gracious living in a totally relaxed, outdoor setting is unique and has a charm all its own. When asked by Steve for our suggestions about how to make it better, we were hard pressed to come up with anything substantive.
I don't know whether you embrace all of your guests as you did our little family, but we felt as though we were being welcomed into a wonderfully warm, interesting, and entertaining family that we were only too happy to be adopted by.
