Service Excellence at El Pescador!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This was an amazing week! Of the four of us traveling, 2 fished and 2 did not and we had equally amazing stays! The villa was spacious, clean and well equipped. The food was AMAZING with the added benefit of a community style dinner each night complete with the ability to interact with management, connect with the other guests and celebrate all the successes of a fishing day. The fishing was professional and well guided. ALL staff members were FABULOUS! This includes all guides, servers, office staff, bar tending, house keeping, grounds keeping, security...we already miss them! They were kind, professional and made sure to quickly learn our names and how to make our stay enjoyable. For those of us who did not fish, staff supported us by helping us schedule excursions (snorkeling, visiting Mayan ruins...shout out to Shamira for coordinating for us!), spa services (can't be beat!) or we just enjoyed the area by golf cart rental and use of the pools. Exceeded our expectations and I would highly recommend. Thank you, El Pescador!

Epic Permit Day

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I just returned from my trip to El Pescador and had my most successful day of Permit fishing ever! I was able to land nine permit in one day. Permit are always elusive and have evaded me on previous trips. But, I have always been fortunate in that the guides find fish every time for us to cast to. Sometimes they like the flies, sometimes they don’t. This particular day, the tides, the wind and the fish all cooperated. Epic day! Also as always, the lodge, staff and food are fantastic. Highly recommend!

Fishing in the tropic with beloved friends

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Went to El Pescador Resort at the recommendation of Orvis. The staff were always very friendly and helpful. The food was well made, and they accommodated dietary restrictions without issues. The housing was neat and comfortable; it was cleaned daily and the laundry was collected and returned without a snag. They were working on the main pool area at the time which brought with it inconveniences (e.g., noise pollution with hammering and sawing at times). We moved to the other two pools on the premises. Fishing was fun and challenging. We had one guide (2 days) that was not the best. He seemed withdrawn and disengaged at times. However, we all felt the other guide was outstanding (Nestor). We all highly recommend Nestor. He was patient, a great instructor, and he made the whole experience both fun and educational. I really enjoyed El Pescador and would certainly consider going back.

Fly fishing in Valhalla!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

My brother and I just returned from El Pescador lodge. What a phenomenal place. The rooms in the lodge are clean, comfortable and air conditioned! The lodge itself is a throwback to simpler times and is of a rugged colonial architecture. It just fits perfectly on the beach. The staff was friendly, the food was amazing and the fishing was great. the guides were all helpful and put us on fish everyday. We hooked up on Tarpon, bonefish and barracuda - all on the fly! But this was far from a fly fishing only lodge, they offered plenty of other excursions. I can't enough about this place.

Poor fishing destination

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Everything said about the resort is true. Fine food, fine staff, fine accommodations. But I cannot recommend it as a fishing destination unless the tarpon are migrating here later in the summer. But there are plenty of places in the States where migrating tarpon can be found in the summer. We fished five days with resort-provided guides. For three days we pretty much fished the same water along with the dozens of other guides that work the area around Ambergris Caye. Our guides, a bunch of local brothers, tended to hit the same spots day after day. After five days of fishing, we landed four small bonefish. Not a great result after spending $13,000 for travel, resort and guide fees and tips. To be fair, there were windy conditions. That is always a challenge. And the guides were fine, sweet people, although not particularly instructive. However, the facts... 1) we did not see feeding bonefish the entire five days. That's 40 hours on the water. The fish we did catch were hooked when we blind casted into mud. 2) The area seems to be overfished. Guide boats were every where. It is my understanding that 40 to 50 boats go out daily in this area. 3) The fish appeared to be heavily pressured. When the fishing director took a couple clients in a canoe in the lagoon behind the lodge, they did find tailing bonefish. No one fishes this spot. Pressure matters. 4) The majority of bonefish here are small. None took us into our backing, as you might wish for in bonefish waters. The guides indicated it was more of a nursery for small bones. 5) One of the guides told tales of his father using gill nets to kill snook. He bragged that gill net catches of snook would often range between 500 to 800 pounds. Gill nets were banned in Belize only recently (2020). There is plenty of evidence that the resource has been depleted. Guides took us to mangroves where residential juvenile tarpon could be found. It's my belief though, and its only a belief, that these were known spots that are beat up regularly by the guides. The tarpon in these spots did not give us the time of day, although people staying at the lodge did catch one now and then based on evening reports at dinner. In the first four days, our guides would sit for two or three hours at select spots, waiting for a known school of permit to show. Sometime there would be four to six guide boats cruising the same area seeking shots at these fish. We did see two schools of permit during our week of fishing and did have about 15 minutes of opportunity to cast to them. Permit are tough, but.... On our last day we were finally assigned a different guide who did put us on juvenile tarpon in the 15 to 20 lb range in different water that we had visited earlier in the week, and we did hook two of them. i am not an inexperienced bone fisherman. I have fished for bones in Andros, Abaco, Crooked Island, Eluethera and Caicos over the past 25 years and caught hundreds on the fly. It is not my intent to hurt the resort with this review. As I stated, the staff, the food and the facility is top notch. Just be aware of what you are getting into, if you are headed to Ambergris hoping for good numbers of fish before the tarpon migration, you may want to adjust your expectations.

El Pescador has carved out a real niche for itself. Its combination of comfortable and gracious living in a totally relaxed, outdoor setting is unique and has a charm all its own. When asked by Steve for our suggestions about how to make it better, we were hard pressed to come up with anything substantive.

I don't know whether you embrace all of your guests as you did our little family, but we felt as though we were being welcomed into a wonderfully warm, interesting, and entertaining family that we were only too happy to be adopted by.
