Travaasa Austin in Austin, Texas

Travaasa Austin may be only 30 minutes from the capital, but in Hill Country it's a different world completely. Come to Travaasa – which derives its name from travel and pravaasa, the Sanskrit word for "memorable journey" – for self-discovery and for meaningful, authentic experiences with Texans who want to share their beloved countryside. Come to feel the wind in your hair while hiking through a field of bluebells, to become one with your breath in a grove of anacua trees, and to Texas Two-Step under the stars.

Heal your soul with the spa's essential oils and plant-based treatments. Dig into a plate of French toast made from agave-sweetened polenta and cabernet cranberries. As the sun bakes the rugged hills, take a hike with an ecologist through shaded trails to Lake Travis, learning about the area's flora and fauna. Strike up a bond with a Palomino filly, taking her for a gentle ride as chickens scurry through the fields of the organic farm. Cuddle up by the fire pit with a bottle of wine.

En-route; when we called to ask for an early check-in a staff member was rude, to say the least. Arrival; we expected something a bit more. The grounds were not as well maintained as other places of this price point. The room; small, not clean, noisy, damp, open shower, not much of a view. The photos are deceiving...the rooms are very small. The room was not as clean as you would expect and I got a chance to see how they handled the towels. We stepped out on the deck to enjoy the limited view and were greeted with the aroma of someone below us smoking...*it is supposed to be a smoke-free property...and the road noise was continuous. When I got into the bed...the sheets felts damp and cold. The bathroom has no tub and no shower door...I am not one that enjoys cold breezes on my body while I am showering. The pool; disappointing, not clean, loud. We stopped by the pool only to find it in desperate need of a makeover, the deck and chaises were not very clean and the noise level was too high to sit and relax. THE STAFF... With the exception of the clerk that was rude to my wife on the phone...THE STAFF WAS INCREDIBLE!!! Great people, the kind that make you feel welcomed and comfortable. I would like to thank the amazing wait-staff at the restaurant..."Statler" keep doing what you do...we appreciate your dedication. My advice is...WAIT...stay away until after the renovation!!! We had planned on staying five (5) days...we check-in at three o'clock on Tuesday and we checked-out at nine o'clock the following morning... During our check-out we shared our experience with the Concierge and were asked "Are you the couple going to the Archer"...I find it hard to understand why no one reached out to us after knowing of our disappointment... *A Note to the establishment...bath mats, soaps, a good coffee maker, bathroom doors that close, nice paint finishes, etc. are expected when patrons pay nearly $600 a night!!!

Travassa is the kind of place where you can experience multiple types of experiences. We went on a business trip with people form all over the world and did a farm tour and dinner. Kim did a great job explaining the farm and its eco-system best practices. Then we had an amazing dinner with food host and bartender who were amazing and I wish I knew their names. The service was so customer centric and with a genuine desire to wonderful to find in hospitality! Then Lorenzo took us in a golf cart to our bus. They just all made it work so well and effortlessly and with genuine care.

We traveled to Travassa with our adult children and spouses. There was something for everyone - golf, spa, pool, classes and hikes. The food was excellent and the setting stunning and serene. We would love to go back!

We stayed on a weekend for our Anniversary. It rained the first half of the first day, but there were still activities to do. We had massages in the spa, cooking classes, and other activities by the farm/barn. Everyone was so nice and helpful! We were able to check in early (before our room was ready) at about 9am, and we used the lockers in the spa to house our belongings and change into clothes for the activities and pool until our room was ready. We were able to maximize the time there and the activities. You can also stay until 5pm on the day you check out, but have to check out of your room by noon. You can still utilize the spa lockers the same way after you check out at noon. I have also been to this location as a day pass, and this was also a great way to spend a "girls day" at the spa. You have to call ahead and book these day passes since they are limited. I highly recommend this resort for both overnight stays and day passes.

I'm from Texas so it's not the rustic vibe at Travaasa that wasn't a fit for me. For $500 a night, I expect 1) walls that aren't thin enough to make your upstairs neighbor sound like an elephant at 1:00am 2) housekeepers who remove the trash from your room when they visit you. The bugs in the room are understandable. The food reviews claim that chefs are "obsessed with nourishing guests" but I had the NY strip and short ribs and they were just okay. Things I was wild for: 1) the pool and view 2) the Thai massage and the in-water massage - phenomenal 3) the yoga classes and 4) the wine list and bar staff.
