Amandari in Bali, Indonesia

Designed to mirror a traditional Balinese village, Amandari blends luxury with insight into everyday local life. The name means "peaceful spirits," and you'll indeed find soothing for your soul as you linger in this idyllic property set on an escarpment overlooking the Auying River Gorge. Relax in the open-air lobby designed after a wantilan--village meeting place--or unwind in the spa, where open-air bales surrounded by a lotus pond seem to float peacefully above the water.

Here, just outside the country's artistic capital of Ubud, sumptuous accommodations climb the scale of lavishness to reach a pinnacle in the five-pavilion Amandari Villas with its own two-tiered swimming pool. Crafted largely of teak, The Restaurant opens onto fresh breezes as it gazes over the green-tiled pool and gorge. Between savoring appetizing nibbles and indulgent spa treatments, escape to the trio of modest shrines at the sacred spring-fed pool nestled between the resort and river below.

My wife and I recently spent three nights at Amandari to celebrate our 40th anniversary. It was our first trip to Bali and a surprise one for my wife. I had given the hotel fairly detailed instructions and everything just turned out to be perfect. From the meet and greet at the airport where we were whisked through the immigration and customs lines to arranging the various excursions and events everything was perfectly arranged. This was our third Aman after Amanpuri in Phuket and Amanjena in Marrakesh, and it is gratifying how the Aman experience always replicates perfection. The settings are always spectacular, the accommodations luxurious without a trace of bling, blending into the local culture and architecture and the service! Always the service! Understated and subtle, anticipating your needs at every stage, you leave your room for half and an hour, and the room has been made up, you want something gift wrapped, no problem. The hotel is almost thirty years old, and wears it’s age with charm with moss covered walls while all the infrastructure is beautifully maintained. It was also clear that the long serving staff take pride in their work, and Aman’s contribution totheir communities and to conservation is also noteworthy. A beautifully kept establishment with great staff and part of a hospitality group I have always admired.

My partner and I spent 3 days at Christmas at Amandari and could not have had a more wonderful and relaxing time. Amandari is amazing and as it is the second Aman hotel in the Aman group of hotels. It has had over 20 years to become even more charming, with moss and foliage creating the appearance of an old temple in may areas. Our room was huge and had every comfort needed. The only negative was that there are no tea making facilities in the rooms, although I am sure that it’s quite easy to call and order from the main house, I just like to have access to tea easily whenever I travel “being English” by birth. Thanks for the amazing time Jaan and the Amandari Team. I hope to be back someday.

The Aman group has always set some of the highest standards in world class resorts, the Amandari wears that badge in beautiful tropical splendor. Upon entering the villa, you smell a wonderfully woody scent that comes from the thatching that they use in the roof. Each come elegantly appointed with floor to ceiling teak and teak furniture, a private garden and your own plunge pool. Service is efficient and discreet. The hotel's grounds, especially the lobby, is beautifully lit at night. Though the property is officially in Kedewatan. The famous Ubud Town center is but a ten minute car ride away.

The property is situated in an incredible location overlooking the lush Ayung River Valley. Our visit happened to coincide with the eruption of Mt Agung which closed the DPS airport. As the other reviews note, the service here is incredible - but it really made a difference when we decided to leave Bali and make our way to the nearest open airport - located 14 hours away via car-ferry-car in Surabaya, Java. While the entire staff pitched in to help, Asrami did an amazing job arranging all the complicated logistics for the trip, including having the car stocked with breakfast for our 3am departure. Everything went off without a hitch. We should mention that before we left we enjoyed the spa, one of the best you’ll experience, and dinner specially prepared by Nick the head chef. When the going gets tough - a great staff really makes a difference. Thank you, Amandari!

The staff is an amazing person, they were very helpful. It made my job so easier . This place is absolutely recommended to do your wedding day especially if you are blocking all the room. Can't wait to do another wedding to this venue...such an busy experience to do lovely thing in lovely place.
