Amandari in Bali, Indonesia

Designed to mirror a traditional Balinese village, Amandari blends luxury with insight into everyday local life. The name means "peaceful spirits," and you'll indeed find soothing for your soul as you linger in this idyllic property set on an escarpment overlooking the Auying River Gorge. Relax in the open-air lobby designed after a wantilan--village meeting place--or unwind in the spa, where open-air bales surrounded by a lotus pond seem to float peacefully above the water.

Here, just outside the country's artistic capital of Ubud, sumptuous accommodations climb the scale of lavishness to reach a pinnacle in the five-pavilion Amandari Villas with its own two-tiered swimming pool. Crafted largely of teak, The Restaurant opens onto fresh breezes as it gazes over the green-tiled pool and gorge. Between savoring appetizing nibbles and indulgent spa treatments, escape to the trio of modest shrines at the sacred spring-fed pool nestled between the resort and river below.

Very nice hotel. Love the landscape and the location of the hotel which is slightly away from the busy Ubud central. Very helpful and friendly hotel staff which never failed to make you feel welcome. The room needs a tea or coffee machine. Nice room but needs a little upgrade. Breakfast menu needs to have more choices for guest who stay more than 3 nights. However the fresh fruit juice was great. My partner and I enjoyed the Yoga session provided by the hotel. We also love the little surprise gifts from the hotel. We also like the idea of the hotel working closely with the local community. We enjoyed the stage show performed by the local villagers at the temple nearby. Is also a brilliant idea to have a few ladies from the local villages preparing some local tea and snack for the guest during team time at 4 to 5 pm. Overall, is a hotel that you must consider if you are coming to Ubud.

Staying at Amandari is part staying in a big terraced garden full of flowering bushes, part feeling like a corner of an old temple, divided up by atmospheric old stone walls. The dining area and pool overlook a cultivated green valley and has a view you could gaze at all day. The grounds and the staff feel part of the community around it, rather than walled-in and cut off. I like the simple local wood and rattan feel of the room, and its spaciousness. Welcoming us in the evening were local scented flowers that perfume it beautifully. I was taken with the little gifts on the pillow come evening time, and the iPod in the corner of the room playing addictive Balinese percussion music. But it's quite a while since an iPod has been cool. And this is my criticism of the hotel. For the price and the aimed for level of comfort, I think there needs to be a little investment in amenities. There isn't coffee/tea making facilities; I'd like a soft-glow night light so you don't stub your toe on the furniture at night; and I'd like small individual bottles of branded shower gel, not an anonymous ceramic container of the stuff that has had countless fingers dipped in before you. I don't think I'm being unreasonable, as I recently stayed in the Jakarta version of a certain Canadian luxury hotel chain, and these were all there. There is a good range of activities like evening theatre and music that feel local, authentic and deeply felt, and was really quite eerie. And we also enjoyed the morning yoga by the fish pond, which was another good memory of our time. The breakfast menu was a bit hit and miss, and we didn't enjoy everything on it (note to self - don't eat quinoa as breakfast cereal again as it doesn't work) but the juice selection was good. But the staff all personify the Balinese traits of friendliness, gentleness and welcome, and are very attentive and quick to help, and we had a super and relaxing time in Ubud that went far too fast.

First visit to Bali and we were very spoilt. The Amandari is a unique resort and a perfect place to relax and chill out. The experience started withe complimentary airport meet and greet service and then check in at the resort was in the villa (upgraded - thank you). Staff so polite and helpful and the facilities faultless. Looked at but didn't use the gym (better to lie down). The villas are individual and very spacious. Infinity pool staggering and the restaurant, overlooking the pool, was a joy. Menu selection and food presentation was as one would expect for such a place. Very visible and friendly general manager. Definitely one for the bucket list!

Peaceful and perfect - Amandari is a true slice of haven! The setting, food and service ticks every box, and the traditional inspired rooms make you feel like you are truly in Bali. Make sure you get a river fronting room to soak up the amazing views!

The Aman's hospitality is always guaranteed. The general manager and always attentive to the needs of their customers. Unfortunately the rooftops of the rooms are in straw and smelly, this would be the only reason I would not go back
