Amankila in Bali, Indonesia

Amankila is a tranquil beachside haven on the remote east coast of Bali. The resort, set against the dramatic backdrop of distant strato volcano Mt Agung, is enveloped by lush vegetation and overlooks the Lombok Strait. Its layout features a serene, three-tiered pool tumbling down the hillside like a cascading rice field. Elevated to maximize sea views and joined by meandering walkways, Amankila’s Suites appear to float amidst frangipani and bougainvillea trees. Inside, coconut wood and furniture inlaid with pearl complement the thatched roofs. The ocean-view Restaurant focuses on locally sourced ingredients. Traditional local techniques are combined with contemporary cooking styles for revitalizing cuisine.

Drawing on the energy of east Bali, the Spa’s therapies aim for complete relaxation and presence in the moment. Natural ingredients are used in traditional Balinese baths, scrubs and wraps – available in the privacy of guest Suites, the massage pavilion, a beach bale or secluded open-air spot with tropical canopy. Scuba divers and snorkellers will find wonder in the unspoiled coral reefs, and the waves attract surfers and kayakers. The island emanates with crafts, culture and a royal past; and evenings are perfect for romantic dinners on the beach.

One of my favorite resorts I've ever stayed in and had I known, our trip would have spent double the time here. We stayed in four 5 star resorts during our three week trip to Bali and Amankila was unquestionably our favorite. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the chef, which was a first for me. As a person who puts a lot of value on dining experience, I very much appreciated it and it made me feel like we were in for great dining experiences. The cuisine was great. The pictures online don't do it justice. You have to witness the panoramic views and see the villas to appreciate this resort. There's so much positive to say about this resort and I don't want to leave out the staff. The only criticism I'll list is outside of the resort's control. A large oil distribution facility exists south down the coast. While looking over the edge of the beautiful infinity pools, you sometimes have to look at multiple oil tankers coming into port that doesn't promote the positive energy the rest of the resort does. Again, nothing the resort can control and this would not stop me from returning. Would I go back? Absolutely and you should too. Stop searching and book your villa now.

We did a two-week tour of Southeast Asia, staying in a number of luxury hotels throughout. Here is what we loved about the Amankila: Stunning pools and surrounding pool areas, luxurious rooms, great air-conditioning, attentive service, beautiful scenery, lovely flower arrangements, peaceful setting, relaxing cabanas by the private beach, delicious food. We were slightly less impressed by: Very expensive drinks, lack of surrounding amenities (there is really not anything to do outside of the hotel), beautiful but not jaw-dropping beach, pretty private pools that were nice but not as nice as others we had seen, and a lack of privacy between rooms. It almost felt weird to swim in your private pool, because anyone could walk right up to it. I wish I could give 3.5 stars, because it was truly a beautiful, well thought out, well curated, restful, and luxurious hotel. It just paled a little bit in comparison to the other places we stayed throughout the region in terms of scenery, surroundings, and interest.

Amankila has always been out very favorite hotel around the globe, a smooth enclave of style, elegance and outstanding service provided by the most kind team ever. As the most evident proof, our recent stay in March was out 18th visit in this hotel gem but after our four nights and with a painful regret, I have to say we found this hotel diamond slightly less sparkling for several reasons. It's really hard to say something not as positive as it has been since I'm a fellow amanjunkie and I've always considered Kila as the best place where to relax in this world but, at a point, an electroshock is needed to make management aware and ready to make everything possible to maintain amankila at the highest position. We stayed at usual in suites 23~24 at the top of the resort and straight after check in we have been disturbed by a strong and annoying bad smell coming from the pipes. After several complaints and as many checks by the staff, they didn't notice anything wrong but finally offered to move to the top suite installs and a suite next by, nice offer we declined because we were too lazy to re-pack our luggage. We just hope all necessary will be done. We have been quite surprised as well about the Kila family. If before they were all smily all the time and so friendly. This time most of them looked tired and sad like affected by a kind of melancholy. That said they are still providing a first class service but without this little touch which is making all the difference. Consequently there was a lack of atmosphere and very surprisingly it took one full day for us to deal with and feel ok. We even considered to leave which has never happened before but finally stayed and found the way how to be ok. The area where Kila is located is simply stunning and far from massive tourism footprints. We had everyday a wonderful walk crossing villages, rice fields, rain forest and with always breathtaking views on the ocean. We highly suggest the guests to try one of the Aman experiences to enjoy in style this unique environment. We had only one dinner at Kila with the lovely regional manager Ian and his wife and we did like it even if we miss the previous executive chef who was perfect for Kila introducing more innovative and always perfectly executed dishes. Breakfasts are still very good with a very yummy bread with fruits and nuts and the very best mie goreng ever. Something we didn't appreciate is how old and not impeccably clean were pool and beach towels. All of them were, to our point of view, a bit dirty and didn't show the excellence of aman we have always loved. And in 2017, not having tea facilities in the suite is a problem... Finally, departure hasn't been emotional. We can't count how many times we left amankila with tears in our faces but this time, check out has been quickly done in between other guests who were arriving. Staff was busy and even forget to give us the usual "cake de voyage". We realized at this moment that the Aman DNA is vanishing and this is now an other page of the Aman history. We missed the time Adrian Zecha was the chairman...

Just to sit by the poolside, either down in the garden or the 3 pools up by the hotel is worth every cent. Tranquility and excellent service. The staff is super friendly, even a bit too much for me, almost everyone asked me for my name, where I come from, etc. Too much at times. The food was correct for their European prices. The brownie with ice cream is a must.
