Why We'd Visit Again... Terima Kasih to the the kind folks who took great care of us.....Pak Desu, Pak Cana, Pak Imam, Ibu Sophia (Bambu/in room dining) for the sumptuous meals and exceeding service. Ibu Kadek (pool/kids club), Ibu Palini (spa/gift shop). Faceless friends from guest services (dial "0"). Ibu Cornelia (front desk) once you get her attention. Unsung heroines and heroes from house keeping, gardening and engineering who tend tirelessly to the spacious villas, lush foliage and gardens. Fixable Niggles.... Services at the beach are sorely lacking (a few day beds, a parasol or 2, perhaps bottled water....bring your own towels...). Peak hour check in could be better. A rushed greeting, tagging of baggage, ringing of the gong and a lingering wait on a lobby sofa till we got Ibu Cornelia's attention. Confused green policies...extra towels upon request but drinking water in plastic bottles. Unnecessary and excessive personal data collection for direct bookings. Hard To Fix...... Noise from construction beyond resort grounds, around Melasti Beach makes villa picking vital for a pleasant stay.

We spent four nights at the Banyon Tree at the end of our Bali visit and in many ways it was the perfect place. The hotel is beautifully maintained, cut into a cliff top with a beach just a short (if steep) walk away and a constant view of the sea throughout the resort. The villas are huge with fantastic private pools, luxurious bathrooms and beds and so much space and privacy you can lose yourself in your own little world. All the staff are fantastically friendly and whenever something goes wrong or needs attention they are straight onto it. The breakfast offers a fantastic selection of very tasty food, influenced by destinations all over the world. Just one thing stopped me giving an excellent rating.... the outrageous prices. I don't mean the cost of staying, I mean within the hotel at restaurants and the pool bar. We arrived here having stayed at two different 5* resorts in Bali but hadn't seen anything like the ludicrous prices. £9.00 for a SMALL bottle of Carlsberg, a lager that is considered cheap and poor quality in Europe. £6.00 for a small bottle of locally produced Bintang. Local shops sell large bottles (twice the size) for £2.50. The wine and cocktail price lists are genuinely shocking. Even 'mocktails' are pushing towards the £10.00 mark. Wine is very expensive throughout Indonesia, I assume due to the import costs, but the two island vineyard range that they charge around £40.00 per bottle in the hotel restaurants are sold for around £10.00 in local shops. They give you free water all day but expect you to pay around £6.00 for a bottle of mineral water at dinner. I've stayed in a lot of 5* resorts, in Bali, London and throughout the world and have rarely seen such ridiculous prices. Thankfully we did some research and found some amazing local restaurants where you could get some incredible, authentic dishes with wine, cocktails, beers or whatever you like and return to the Banyon Tree with change from £30.00 (for two). A real shame because in every other way it's amazing. They act like they've got you trapped into the 'campus' set-up and you're only option is to eat in their restaurants and pay their prices but it isn't. Despite all this I would go back because it's a beautiful setting and the staff are incredibly helpful and warm.... just review your bar prices to resemble reality and you've got the perfect hotel.
