I am writing this review from an over water bungalow in the Maldives Island. This makes country number 60 in all my travels. I have seen literally dozens of hotels and villas in my life and I can truly say that Banyan Tree Ungasan is the very best I have experienced. My fife and I just left there yesterday (December 13, 2017). We stayed at the cliff villa 218 and it was perfect. The architecture, the attention to every detail, minor things that would go unnoticed. I was most impressed with their laundry service. When our clothes not only came back very clean but packaged as if they were just store bought, perfectly ironed and folded with individual sheets of papers within, delivered in wicker boxes containing each a sachet of potpourri. Let me say service well appreciated. The price was indeed above our usual but was worth every penny. We are set to return in August 2018.

After the New Year Eve's diner in this resort several years ago, we wanted to stay in this resort one day. We stayed five nights in an ocean view pool villa during the 2016 Christmas days when we had holiday in Bali for the second time. The resort is comfortably big with beautiful garden and ocean view. The breakfast was nice with quite many varieties and there were always something new and different from the previous day. The waiting staff for the breakfast were kind, attentive and polite. The villa was specious and comfortable with excellent layout. We had spa for two times as we found the massage therapists were excellent and immediately booked next spa after the first one. As a matter of fact, spa was just one of the reasons we had chosen this recort as the spa from Banyang Tree had never let us down. It might be a big cost to upgrade all the facilities in the resort but it is necesary to replace the old towers, hangers, napkins and iron board etc. All of these stuff we had used were poor and old. Jumana, the restaurant we had liked so much before, was unfamiliar to us. We had Christmas Eve dinner in Jumana but the food taste was terrible. We really had the concern whether the chef had any basic skill and knowledge to cook the food. We also had the hygiene concern over the food from this restaurant as my wife had terrible diarrhoea and stomachache for the whole night after the dinner. Despite the old facilities and the unpleasant experience from Jumana, we enjoyed our stay in this resort and hope to see the improvements for the next time.

Highly recommend this place. One of the best breakfast buffet you can find. Very secluded if this is what you are seeking for. I don't think the beach in front of the resort is know much to tourists. It is actually much much better than other beaches in Bali in all aspects. (Especially in the morning, during low tides) Be sure to go down to the beach. You can use the resort's golf cart to get there. Although the resort is located in the out of nowhere, it takes about 30 min ($20-$30) to get to Kuta or other shopping areas. Kids program is a bit lame, so Kids might find this place a bit boring after one or two days.

We stayed at a villa with direct ocean view, which literally gave us front row seats to beautiful sunsets. The infinity pool was big and the jacuzzi had slightly warmer water for colder evenings. We were so amazed at how much space was given to the bathroom and loved it! For meals, we dined at Bambu for breakfast and lunch, ordered in-villa dining a couple of times, and also had dinner at Ju Ma Na restaurant - all of which we thoroughly enjoyed! If you're looking for a spa retreat, please treat yourself to one of the treatments here. We did a Balinese massage + body scrub and were so impressed by the professionalism and technique of the staff! I don't even like massages so they must be really good to make me want to book another Balinese massage! Most importantly, and also the main reason why I'm writing this review - kudos to the amazing team at Banyan Tree Ungasan! A big thank you for your warm hospitality throughout our stay. There were some concerns regarding the airport being closed due to the situation at Mt. Agung but you made us feel right at home - from the buggy drivers to the housekeeping team to the friendly staff at the pool. Unfortunately I can't remember everyone's names - only Selly, the Guest Service Officer who checked us in, and Cana & team at Bambu. Appreciate if you can send our best wishes & thanks to everyone! We already can't wait to plan our next trip back (:

We stayed here for our baby moon and planned to spend the whole week at the villa with in-room-dining. Overall we had a good stay, however for the price we paid per night I expect the service and quality to be really outstanding at all times. It was about 85% of the time, however there were a few issues that I feel should not be found in a property charging premium prices. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, the only issues some times is that they do not seem to understand my Australian accent and just ignore what I say or assume something completely wrong. Simply put, if you are not sure what your customer is asking please just say, sorry may you repeat the question. This issue caused a few incorrect room service orders, which when you are waiting for them to correct an error the 10min we wait the food has gotten cold. We ate lunch and dinner in-room-dining for 7 days so the food was of a good standard but not exceptional, over this time the food got a little repetitive, to their credit they allowed some modifications to the menu at no extra cost. However if you are not in-room-dining to much it should be fine. The in-room-dining cost was not expensive which was well appreciated. We ate one lunch at the cliff edge restaurant which was very nice and great quality but a bit to heavy on the pricing i felt. The villas themselves were very nice, great layout and large infinity pool. The view from our room was sensational, we were 2 villas up from the cliff restaurant. If we return we will be staying there again. The breakfast was reasonably good with a decent selection of food and prepared eggs etc however I stay at the Sofitel often and find there breakfasts to be a higher standard consistently. Again though we suffered a few occasions where they took our orders and seemed to have forgotten or got completely confused. Being someone who likes to enjoy a hot coffee with breakfast I found it irritating that on the second morning they took my coffee order upon arriving and after asking 3 times throughout breakfast it arrived about 35m later, after i had finished eating. They Gym is well equiped but quite far out the way with no real view. Maybe bring an ipad and watch a movie while running. The main pool by the breakfast place looked very nice and had a good options for lazing about. Lastly the beach is very close by if you want to go for a stroll or run anytime of the day, it is public. To finish up, I would like to stay there again and have no issue paying the rates if the standard consistently reflects the price. I think next time I will take more time to be explicit with some of the staff on our orders etc.
