Kamandalu Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

The Petanu River carves out a lush valley that cradles Kamandalu Ubud, a collection of villas that immerses guests in the Balinese way of life. “Kamandulu,” adopted from Sanskrit, means “the vessel that holds the holy water,” a moniker that encourages finding inner peace. Built from native wood and stone with peaked alang-alang grass roofs, the resort is a nurturing home base for authentic encounters with the countryside’s shrines, villages and other cultural attractions.

Listen to the sounds of the rainforest from your four-poster bed. Go for a solitary walk, following stone paths past a lotus pond surrounded by frangipani and hibiscus. Quiet your mind until you feel the vibration of a passing hummingbird. Continue your exploration through Tampak Siring villages to the moss-covered Gunung Kawi temple. Tuck into a plate of Javanese fried rice.

We traveled to Kamandalu on our honeymoon. The staff did everything possible to make our stay special and comfortable. The breakfast was very good each day, with a fair amount of selection. I highly recommend the trekking trip - and not the Tegalalang one. Our Kamandalu guide took us to rice paddies that were quite close to the hotel, and it was honestly a far more authentic and peaceful experience.

Kamandalu Resort has stunning views and surroundings. Having travelled to different places in Seminyak and the Gili Islands, we felt like we had arrived on a film set! While the resort, swimming pool and main reception building is beautiful, our room felt a little dark and musty. We had booked a garden villa but from the photos I was expecting a bigger garden - it was very tiny in comparison! The room however was very clean and had great Balinese decor. The staff were extremely friendly which is typical of many people in Bali! They would do anything to help us and ensure we enjoyed our stay. The free shuttle into central Ubud was useful. The food however is Kamandalu's weakest point. Breakfast was good with a good variety on offer across the buffet. However on our first night, we decided to eat at the pool bar which wasn't very good. The food took a while to appear, and was very plain and felt as though it had been heated up! We had also paid for an additional candlelight dinner experience. While the surroundings were beautiful, particularly for honeymooners, the food was below average. It was a 3-course dinner but there were no options for you to choose (they didn't check if we had any dietary requirements). Starter was beef salad, main was a chicken breast with some cherry tomatoes, and dessert looked like the end of a Cornetto! Fantastic resort which I'd definitely recommend, but worth eating out in central Ubud for sure!

Well, first, thanks to Agoda, we had an amazing deal so we paid for way less than what the rooms usually cost for. So please note that my review is based on my experience, but also on the value for money that I received. The concierge and butler service that one would get along with the private-pool villas are excellent. It was amazing to learn that all drinks and snacks in the room were complimentary, even the ones in the fridge! Ubud, however, is in the hills and therefore the temperature won't be as hot as by the beach, and depending on what time of the year you go, the pool (all pools have the same temperature) might be a bit too cold to truly enjoy. The bedrooms and bathrooms are clean, but does need a bit of a facelift or upgrade especially when it comes to the LOOK of the place. Even though it was still nice, but for the amount of money you'd normally be paying for that room, one would have been expecting to walk into luxurious yet rustic rooms with top of the line amenities like those you'd find in 5-7 star hotels. The interior look and even the door of the villas are a bit outdated. It's nice to know that you can have breakfast in your room as an option if breakfast is included. And the tours or activities offered by the hotel is commendable, as well. If you're staying for more than 1 night, it might be fun to look into 1 or 2 of those activities. For families traveling with children, please be aware that the bed height can be an issue because they are very tall (or at least the one in my room was), and for someone like me (5'3" or about 160cm) you need to use the ledge they provide beneath the bed to climb up.

After spending eight days in Nusa Dua it was time to try something a little bit different and head to Ubud for four days of relaxation, the idea being to do nothing but unwind. Kamandalu resort turned out to be exactly what we needed and at and affordable price. Being in the low season, May/June there were not that many guests, on check in we were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to the next level room. The accomodation is modest but clean, the outdoor shower was a great experience. This resort is great to unwind as it has a very relaxed atmosphere but if you are mobility impaired it may not be the place for you, there are no lifts at all and with the terraced layout if you are on the lowered villa area there are quite a few stairs to navigate, the staff were by helpful though and arranged for a car to pick us up at the service entrance on the lower area and drive us round to the front office, a good effort but still not the best . The swimming pool also is not mobility impaired friendly, there is no ramp or stair access to the main pool, just ladder steps down the side. That is the only negative that I can say, the food was excellent, the breakfast coked fresh and good variety, the manager Pak Agus was very attentative to his guests and I promise Pak when we next return we will share that bottle of wine we talked about. Definitely a place to u wind and one to return visit.
