Kamandalu Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

The Petanu River carves out a lush valley that cradles Kamandalu Ubud, a collection of villas that immerses guests in the Balinese way of life. “Kamandulu,” adopted from Sanskrit, means “the vessel that holds the holy water,” a moniker that encourages finding inner peace. Built from native wood and stone with peaked alang-alang grass roofs, the resort is a nurturing home base for authentic encounters with the countryside’s shrines, villages and other cultural attractions.

Listen to the sounds of the rainforest from your four-poster bed. Go for a solitary walk, following stone paths past a lotus pond surrounded by frangipani and hibiscus. Quiet your mind until you feel the vibration of a passing hummingbird. Continue your exploration through Tampak Siring villages to the moss-covered Gunung Kawi temple. Tuck into a plate of Javanese fried rice.

This spa offers an exclusive treatment designed to alleviate tired muscles and other jetlag symptoms. To mark the beginning of the treatment, a foot bath therapy came with an aromatherapy. It was supposed to bring up the sensual spirituality, but didn't work for me. Next up, a traditional Balinese massage brought me a deep relaxation while hearing the sound of the forest around me. Spoiler alert: you may want to prepare some efforts to reach at this spa.

My husband and I stayed at the resort for 5 nights and we had an amazing time. The pool villa was beautifully furnished, exceptionally clean and peaceful. We loved the private outdoor shower and the bed was very comfortable. The location was perfect for a quiet and relaxing break so ideal for couples. The grounds were magnificent and well maintained. The restaurant offered an extensive buffet breakfast and we enjoyed a very special Valentines dinner with great food and entertainment. However, what really made our trip unforgettable was the service we experienced. Every single member of staff was friendly, helpful, warm and genuine. We felt that everyone wanted us to enjoy our stay and nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely recommend Kamandalu as the best in luxury in Ubud.

We stayed at the two-bedroom villa with a private pool over this past Christmas. The resort is stunning and service at an excellent level. Our luggage had been delayed and the resort staff assisted us by calling the airport on our behalf many, many times to secure our luggage before we moved to our next resort. We couldn't thank them enough, and I have to say the service here is at an exceptional level. The food is a bit pricy but absolutely delicious, breakfast buffet is fantastic with tons of selection. The forest spa is a must do experience and the swing makes for fantastic photos. Overall, we loved our experience. However, I had requested when we booked six months in advance to have a villa that was higher up with an infinity pool (Villas 124, 125 and 126) and was assured that would be done, but we were instead put in Villa 121 when we arrived. Although it was still beautiful, for the extremely high rate we paid I was expecting better in terms of the pool. Our pool was very small, and was not an infinity pool as I had requested. The view looked out over other villa rooftops, and wasn't the jungle paradise I had imagined when booking an exclusive and very expensive resort. Although this may seem like being overly picky, it was a special present for my mother-in-law and was a huge let down to not be in the villa we requested. When I asked the front desk about changing to one of the ones I had requested, they informed me they were all full. I would advise the Kamandalu in future to make sure that guest requests are upheld, especially when someone has booked so far in advance and was assured by management that those villas were available. For that reason, I would probably choose to visit another of the many stunning Ubud hotels for my next visit. For how expensive the villa was, I expected perfection, and it was slightly lacking.

We stayed at one bedroom villa with a pool and it was very nice and clean. The view from our villa is sensational. All staff were so welcoming and went above and beyond. The yoga lesson in the morning is a must. Amazing buffet breakfast and afternoon tea, beautiful hotel with infinity pool, pool bar and rice field. We had dinner at the hotel and it was super delicious with live music. Free shuttle buses from/to the hotel to/from the city centre. Will definitely stay again.

Me and my family stayed at a two-bedroom villa with a pool. Staffs were all very friendly and helpful . The yoga lesson in the morning is a must ! Villa itself could use a little improvement: not sound proof , not enough power outlets .
