Kamandalu Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

The Petanu River carves out a lush valley that cradles Kamandalu Ubud, a collection of villas that immerses guests in the Balinese way of life. “Kamandulu,” adopted from Sanskrit, means “the vessel that holds the holy water,” a moniker that encourages finding inner peace. Built from native wood and stone with peaked alang-alang grass roofs, the resort is a nurturing home base for authentic encounters with the countryside’s shrines, villages and other cultural attractions.

Listen to the sounds of the rainforest from your four-poster bed. Go for a solitary walk, following stone paths past a lotus pond surrounded by frangipani and hibiscus. Quiet your mind until you feel the vibration of a passing hummingbird. Continue your exploration through Tampak Siring villages to the moss-covered Gunung Kawi temple. Tuck into a plate of Javanese fried rice.

This hotel is a gem. Nestled amongst the rice paddies and rain forest is this single story bungalow style hotel with the most gorgeous gardens. Everything about this hotel is beautiful including the staff who literally could not have been more caring or efficient or fabulous. Our room was really spacious and lovely with views of the resort but the best part is the bathroom which has a wall of windows and a door leading to a private outdoor shower area. At night to stand under the stars smelling the frangipanis and watching the lizards dash about was truly heavenly. The resort felt like we had it almost to ourselves - not sure if that is because May is not the busiest time (and therefore the best time to go - and the weather is great) or whether it is just that sort of place . We loved our stay and will definitely be back.

Wonderful experience at the resort...a complete resort which includes every possible things n very well trained staff. One thing I missed which is gym (as I was informed by hotel staff-no gym available here)

We had a wonderful time at Kamandalu and we will cherish the memories. All the staff were absolutely wonderful. Our drivers, Pandi and Esa are truly wonderful people. We thank Kutut for a wonderful cooking class we learned so much and loved the class, we highly recommend taking the cooking class. The Butler staff will be sure that you want for nothing. We loved our stay, thank you!

Every morning I would open our bedroom curtains to paradise. I would recommend going just before or just after high season, when the resort is a little quieter. We stayed in May which was perfect. A magical stay, I would highly recommend.
