Kamandalu Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

The Petanu River carves out a lush valley that cradles Kamandalu Ubud, a collection of villas that immerses guests in the Balinese way of life. “Kamandulu,” adopted from Sanskrit, means “the vessel that holds the holy water,” a moniker that encourages finding inner peace. Built from native wood and stone with peaked alang-alang grass roofs, the resort is a nurturing home base for authentic encounters with the countryside’s shrines, villages and other cultural attractions.

Listen to the sounds of the rainforest from your four-poster bed. Go for a solitary walk, following stone paths past a lotus pond surrounded by frangipani and hibiscus. Quiet your mind until you feel the vibration of a passing hummingbird. Continue your exploration through Tampak Siring villages to the moss-covered Gunung Kawi temple. Tuck into a plate of Javanese fried rice.

We stayed here for out honeymoon in a pool villa and it was amazing. In never stayed any where else in the world where the staff have been so accommodating and friendly. They made it a point to learn our names and room number and we felt like part of the family. I would definitely recommend this place.

We went for our honeymoon to Bali and as a part of the trip we booked the EAT PRAY LOVE package at Kamandalu. It's not cheap, but if you can afford it then definitely go for it. We stayed at a villa with a private garden and a balinese bed. They came at night to make the room for sleeping and give us a goodnight treat. We also enjoyed a 30 minute massage for the two of us (the best of all the massages we had in Bali, which were a lot), had a bike trip through the rice fields, a dinner for two...The hotel is very beautiful with some rice fields in it and the infinity pool is incredible.

We stayed for 3 nights in a one bedroom deluxe pool villa which was very spacious and had a good sized pool. The villa was fully serviced in the morning but in the evening, it was a quick few minute visit to turn down the bed and leave a biscuit on the bed - they did not replace used towels or empty bins of an evening. The villa rate included breakfast which was served in Petulu restaurant. The food choices were good. We had an Indonesian set meal one evening in this restaurant and that was very good with excellent service. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The exterior of our pool villa was on several levels and had a large pavilion daybed on the upper deck and two sunbeds on a lower deck next to the pool. The pool wasn't heated and was a bit chilly for us so we only had one quick dip during our stay. We could have had our breakfast served in our room but since we were so far away from the restaurant, we thought it would be cold by the time it arrived so we went to the restaurant each day for breakfast. The hotel runs a complimentary limited hourly shuttle service into Ubud centre which can take from 10-35 minutes depending on traffic and road diversions. There are lots of shops and restaurants in Ubud centre and it is certainly worth a visit. The hotel offers a range of chargeable activities and dining options such as lunch or breakfast in a rowing boat on their lagoon or breakfast with sparkling wine served on a floating tray in your pool. There is a complimentary yoga session each morning or other paid activities include a Balinese cookery class, village trekking, rice paddy walk, guided bicycle tour, bird watching or a guided morning walk to a temple. There is also a spa. Guests staying in pool villas are allowed access to the village club. This was a nice air conditioned room where they had comfortable seating and some newspapers and magazines and complimentary computer access. They served complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day and you were allowed a maximum of two soft drinks from a limited selection. They also had a very limited range of snacks and you were allowed one cocktail each evening between 6-8pm from a limited list. We ordered the same cocktail on each evening during our three night stay and the quality was very variable - the first night it was watery with almost no liquor content but by the third night, the barman who made our drink did us a great cocktail. Overall the village club was very disappointing in terms of its restricted complimentary food and drink compared with so many other hotels we have stayed at, especially since we paid ยฃ435 per night for B&B at Kamandalu. We did get a complimentary mini bar in our room that is only supplied on the day you check in and not replenished during your stay. The minibar contained a couple of tins of beer, about 4 cans of soft drink and a few bottles of sparkling and still water. There were tea and coffee making facilities provided and supplies were replenished daily during the morning room service. Was this hotel good value for money - definitely not as we booked their top of the range one bedroom villa. I think it would be better to book a basic room by the lagoon and use the main pool at the hotel which was warmer as it was a large water expanse with lots of direct sun on it.

Shy to write a review about this place as it would be sad for it to get too busy & loose its charm. Get the Experience Package and add on Cooking School. Was a perfect get away & chance to experience the resort & Balinese service/food. Lovely calm setting, pleasant staff. My only complaint would be spotty wifi; having to keep logging on in different locations... only because i had to do some work, but otherwise would have preferred to be off the radar. Breakfast included was amazing for taste & selection, and if something wasn't there, we asked & it arrived. Fruit juices, fruit, Balinese food, etc... YUM! Yoga in the morning was breath-taking. Don't forget the rice field cycling tour as part of the package! We will be back, next time with pool villa...
