Extremely disappointing Wedding Experience at Soori Bali – Poor Management, Service and Maintenance

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

We chose Soori Bali for our intimate overseas wedding (about 60-70 guests) due to its beautiful secluded black-sand beach, rice-field views, and elegant design. As a Leading Hotels of the World property with rates around USD 1,000–1,200/night (as of 2025), we expected strong service. We did our due diligence: we flew in early to do a site visit, taste the menu, and meet with the team to confirm all details. Unfortunately, the reality did not match the expectations at all. From check-in the day before the wedding onward, things started going wrong, and the issues piled up over our 3-day stay, affecting not just us but many of our guests. Key problems we encountered: • Poor internal communication & handover issues – Our original wedding contact had left months earlier with no notification or proper handover, causing repeated misunderstandings. After paying the full balance as required (3 months prior!), we received an unexpected additional payment demand just 1 month before the event. • Defensive staff attitude — Key personnel (Resort Assistant Manager Hengki Adnyana, Wedding Manager Paul Xu, and the French executive chef) often responded to concerns with excuses or minimization (“only one group affected”) rather than solutions or apologies. Language barriers with Paul Xu (who primarily speaks Mandarin as his mother tongue) further complicated matters and highlighted poor internal communication with the local hotel staff. • Check-in delays — Despite confirming 3 PM check-in for all guests, several groups waited until after 4 PM in the lobby. Complaints were downplayed instead of addressed promptly. • Understaffing & poor training — Staff were unable to answer basic questions (e.g., restroom locations) and admitted temporary hires received minimal briefing. During heavy rain, guests in formal wear/heels were told to walk instead of using buggies, leaving many soaked. With 60+ guests, only 3 buggy rotations were scheduled that evening—waits exceeded 20 minutes in pouring rain. • Food quality and consistency issues — Meals were expensive yet very ordinary. Menus repeated identically over 3 days becoming monotonous quickly. Wedding banquet steaks varied wildly in doneness despite our pre-agreed well-done preference for elderly guests—indicating kitchen coordination issues. • Maintenance shortcomings — 1. rain revealed neglected upkeep: multiple rooms had leaking ceilings, bathroom seepage (near-slips reported); 2. hairdryer provided by the hotel require extra adapters we had to supply; 3. broken door locks; 4. unclean bathtubs; 5. ants and rubbish in the rooms; 6. stale snacks in the in-room bar; 7. rusty glass water bottles; 8. broken umbrellas; 9. additionally, after the previous wedding group checked out, rooms were not thoroughly cleaned, old wedding run sheets were left behind, leaking other guests’ information… These problems didn’t arise overnight—they stemmed from deeper systemic issues. The signs of high staff turnover (including our original contact’s unnotified departure), chronic understaffing during peak events, and what appeared to be a vacancy or instability at the Resort General Manager level all point to significant management accountability gaps. At a premium-priced resort like this, leadership should ensure stable teams, proper handovers, adequate resourcing, and a culture of proactive problem-solving rather than deflection. The stunning location couldn’t offset the management gaps, understaffing, and lack of accountability. Instead of enjoying our wedding, we spent much of it resolving problems and apologizing to guests. As a high-end property charging premium rates, the level of service and attention to detail fell far short. I share this not to discourage anyone from Bali weddings, but to urge couples to carefully research recent experiences—especially for events like weddings where reliability matters most. There are other beautiful venues in Bali that may better match this price range and promise. STRONGLY do not recommend Soori Bali for weddings or special events based on our experience.

Luxury at its best

Soori Bali is a luxury resort nestled on the beach within a traditional Balinese village. The buildings blend nicely with nature and they are taking great care in matters of sustainability and they are giving back to the community. The villas are awesome and impeccably serviced twice a day, the staff is knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. We had a wonderful 2 night stay before we had to go back to the US, thank you for a wonderful stay

Unforgettable experience. Would not recommend any other place in Bali!

Our group of 10 couples had an absolutely unforgettable experience at Soori Bali. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us like family and made every detail feel effortless and special. The team arranged incredible experiences for us including a private temple visit, a traditional water cleansing ceremony, helicopter tours to see the island, surf lessons, and one of the most memorable days of the trip bringing in 10 convertible Volkswagens to take us on a scenic drive to a beautiful waterfall where they had an incredible private lunch waiting for us. What truly separated Soori Bali was the level of care and attention to detail. If anyone forgot anything, they somehow already had extra clothes, supplies, or whatever was needed ready for us. Everything was beyond thoughtful and consistently above and beyond expectations. The dinners were extraordinary. Three of the evenings included amazing performances that were spectacular, immersive, and completely unexpected. The food, atmosphere, and service were all world-class. We stayed in the main home, and the staff coordinated everything for our group daily with such professionalism and warmth. They even helped us move through the airport quickly, with a personal guide assisting us from the moment we stepped off the plane until the moment we boarded to leave. I’ve traveled to incredible places all over the world, and no place has ever catered to us the way Soori Bali did. Bali itself is magical, but this property and team are truly one of a kind. We will never forget this experience and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Bali.

My wife and I stayed at Alila Villas Soori for 4 days and we truly loved our time there. Our ocean view villa was so beautiful that we did not want to go out of it - even for food! Loved the attention to detail that was displayed. The service (hosts, chef, manager, reception) was excellent throughout our stay. My wife was 5 months pregnant when we visited. The chef and manager were extremely accommodating to our food requests. We requested for a motorbike to go around the neighboring town. Not only was our request met quickly, but we were given directions as well as a local cellphone in case we got lost. How cool is that! We had a chauffeur pick us from central Bali on the day of our check-in. He also dropped us off when we were ready to leave. The chauffeur is very respectful and helpful, making sure you are comfortable through the journey. When you are at Alila Villas Soori, you truly feel like royalty. It is an amazingly beautiful resort.
