Anantara Sathorn Bangkok Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand

Anantara Bangkok Sathorn’s greatest asset is its location – right on the edge of Bangkok’s Wall Street, just a few minutes’ walk from Silom Road’s shops and restaurants and a short taxi ride from the riverfront – but its ambiance is anything but bustling. A design scheme built on minimalist lines and muted colors is quietly sophisticated, and views from the rooftop Zoom Sky Bar and Restaurant are some of the best in the city. A secluded infinity pool, more than 100 feet long, connects the pair of towers – a touch of Phuket in the middle of the big city.

Gear up for a morning tennis match on the hotel’s fully equipped courts and improve your strokes with a personal coach. Meander through the neighborhood’s markets. Charter a Manohra rice barge-turned-restaurant for a dinner cruise down the Chao Phraya River, gazing at Wat Arun and the Grand Palace as you sample grilled salmon in champagne sauce.

We had a 2BR suite at the hotel. When arriving, all worked well at check-in and the room was immediately available in the early morning. This was when the good experience stopped. We entered the suite and were shocked about the shabby condition, stains, dirt and mould all over. The place has zero atmosphere, decoration or a sign of any effort to make it cozy, comfy or even nice. The only decoration are a few mass production paintings where nobody even cared to remove the price/item stickers. The furniture was extremely worn out, stains and discoloration all over. The sofa was full of indefinite stains - it was really disgusting! Can't understand why the hotel management did not change it as it was far from inviting to sit on somebody's spills or bodyfluids... The suite has two terraces that have no furniture and are dusty. The rooms were cleaned only very basic in the areas the cleaners could reach without any effort - remote areas seemed to be uncleaned for months, especially in the master bathroom, light switches, doors, glass - fingerprints and dirt from the guests of the last year to proove it. The shower head was full of scale and probably never serviced or properly cleaned, the AC full of dirt and mould. The reason is probably the water leakage in the wall where it starts to take off the paint. There are signs of superficial repainting, the painters did not even care to remove the decorative prints but also covered them with paint. The master bedroom is not for people who like to have a room that can be darkened. In that case you will need to use a sleeping mask or change the room or hotel. First of all, the bathroom attached has no proper curtain so the light comes from the bathroom through the glass doors. Secondly, the interior designer or tailor who produced and hanged the curtains was not able to get the measurements right or did not understand the concept of blackout curtains: The blockout of the light and darkening of a room. This only works if the curtains are long and wide enough, which is unfortunately not the case. The curtains are too small and too short, so the light comes in from all sides of each window. On top of that, the curtains even had holes! So having a nap in the afternoon or sleep out is absolutely impossible if you are sensitive to light. The breakfast in the 2nd floor was ok, nothing special and definitely not on a par with other 5* hotels - especially not in Asia! The service there was extremely slow, we had to wait for cappuccinos and tea for 40 minutes all three mornings. Most of the service staff has only very limited knowledge of the English language so communication was difficult. The pool is nice but there are only sunbeds for 15-20 guests that are occupied after 8am. The location of the hotel is not very good if you use taxis as almost no taxi driver knows where the hotel is. The main road next to the hotel has almost always heavy traffic so plan 10-15 min extra. One night we had dinner on the roof top, we were not impressed at all, there is a separate review. When checking out, we had a very unpleasant experience. While we were at the counter to check the final bill, we asked the front desk guy to make sure the cards are working as it was 12.45 and the in-laws had to go up and change and get ready. He did so, returned the cards, the in-laws went upstairs and he printed the the pre-bill for approval. In the meantime, although he knew that somebody just went upstairs to change, he advised his colleague to enter the room DESPITE his better knowledge and the fact that the room clearly signalled "DO NOT DISTURB". The other guy just went inside, no ringing or knocking and was not in the least disturbed to find guests showering and changing. He did neither leave nor apologize!!! As Anantara automatically sends a guest feedback email after the stay, we commented as wished. The manager himself review this feedback form and replied immediately, which was a positive surprise and appreciated. Unfortunately, the front desk staff had not the honesty to admit his wrong-doing and mistake. He tried to cover his back by saying that we returned the keys and he was not aware that somebody was in the room! Well, we did not only not returned a single key but had given the very same person the two keys to make sure they work, he updated them and handed them back immediately knowing and seeing that the parents went upstairs to prepare! We found this behavior outrageous and actually felt sorry for the manager who looked into our feedback immediately, reported back to us just to discover his own staff lied and let him face the guests with the wrong information - making him look like somebody not in charge of his own hotel and staff management! FAZIT: If you can, try to avoid this place. The rooms, staff, restaurants and location are far from being 5* - especially in BKK you can find so many top notch hotels with excellent service that deliver. Anantara Sathorn unfortunately does not - and has in our opinion nothing to do with the otherwise excellent Anantara group. This stay was a complete flop and definitly the worst hotel stay in Asia ever!

My partner and I were in Thailand to get married. Hands down one of the best places i have stayed. From the guest room, to the excellent breakfast buffet ,to the staff that went out of their way to make our experience so much better, to overlooking Bangkok City 37 stories high with a great vibe, This place is unbelievable for value

Great hotel. Everything is nice and looks new. Comfortable shuttle to bts. The room is big, clean, beautiful and very comfortable. The water in the pool was too cold, we couldn't swim the whole time. Breakfast was ok, I didn't enjoy it so much. Over all it's beautiful and comfortable hotel.
