Immerse yourself in a unique tropical haven with your stay at Casa Bonita. In beautiful Barahona, on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, this fabulous family-owned lodge welcomes you experience the natural beauty of the Caribbean. Adjacent to the only ecological reserve in the country, Casa Bonita sits on a hilltop with stunning views of the surrounding forest, mountains and sea. Twelve idyllic cabana-style rooms are perfectly set against the scenic backdrop, and boast a modern yet tranquil atmosphere, and an illustrious infinity pool provides a perfect way to relax and soak in the sun.

Head down to Bahoruco Beach - about a 10-minute walk from the hotel - for a day of swimming and sunning on the bright sands, or hit the waves for an exciting day of windsurfing or kite boarding. Hike in the tropical forests of the Sierra de Bahoruco or tour Jaragua National Park near the Haitian border. See the lagoons, caves and petroglyphs of the renowned Bay of Eagles, and gaze out over Enriquillo Lake, where crocodiles, iguanas and flamingos thrive. Take to the open ocean on a luxury yacht cruise around the coast, a sailing trip into the sunset, or a deep sea fishing excursion sure to make the big catch. Dive at stunning underwater sites off the coast of nearby Pedernales, where some of the best reefs in the Caribbean can be found. Stop at the truly unique Magnetic Pole of Cabral, and be amazed in wonderment as gravity seems to distort itself in front of your very eyes. After a day in the mountains or at the beach, return to the hotel for a beautiful sunset dinner. Delight your palate with fresh fish and shellfish, caught that day, and prepared with local ingredients that soar with flavor. Sip a nightcap as the stars begin to shine over the sea, and drift off to sleep, lulled gently by the waves washing ashore just outside your room at Casa Bonita.

The room was small, dark and somewhat worn, however very clean. The bathroom was modern and had nice toiletries stocked for use. The hotel is part of the Small Luxury Hotels collection, but is not as nice as the other hotels in this group. Given the limitations of the Dominican Republic and the other hotels available, this one definitely had its charms. The staff was attentive. Internet was good. View was very nice. Food was fresh. It was rainy when we were there, so we needed bug repellent. It is a good place to be a base as you explore the nearby national parks and beaches. The driveway is deadly. I was told that it always looks washed out. We appreciated having an SUV. We were there for a birding trip and there were a lot of interesting birds on the property - we did not need to travel far.

This resort is not in one of the touristy areas of the Dominican Republic. It takes a few hours to get there, but well worth the effort. The surrounding areas and villages are one of the few "old Caribbean" experiences you can find. Rural, rustic and exceptionally friendly people. We went to several beaches and we were the only non-locals. The resort itself is well-maintained and modern. Wi-fi in the room was fine. The view from the infinity pool is as good as it gets. Breakfast is good. We only had dinner there one time but enjoyed it immensely. The best part of the whole experience was the people. Every single staff member demonstrated a true friendliness. They don't just want to serve you, they become friends. Everyone that comes into direct contact with you will greet you by name and shake your hand. Ramon, the guest services director, personally showed us around the local villages and even took us to meet his family and friends. He will be a friend for life! If you want to experience the Caribbean as it was and should be, without all of the influence of mass tourism, yet still be in a modern, luxury resort...this is the place to be!

In this part of the DR you will not find a better romantic place. Food is far above any restaurant as well. Peaceful, quiet, romantic. Spa is impressive with great staff, rooms are elegant, textured. Staff have been there for many years and know how to treat customers right. Been visiting this gem for 20 years.

The hotel is pretty clean and tiddy overall. Food is quite decent, taste wise. Althou the menu is really limited. The personel is really charming and customer oriented! Wifi was awful. Rooms have hot water and the view is beautiful. Be aware that mosquitos may be around since the rooms are near a mountain. But in my case there was mosquito repellent on the room.
