Villa Le Maschere in Barberino di Mugello, Italy

Located in the Tuscan countryside, just a short ride from Florence, sits the fashionable Villa Le Maschere. Its stately exterior and luxury status comes from a mélange of centuries-old tradition and cutting-edge hospitality. The building dates back to the 18th century and its architectural features - the stunning frescoes and Venetian plaster - are proof positive. Inside, a new day has dawned with a collection of modern furnishings designed and produced on Italian soil. There are 65 minimalist-style guest rooms that rest beneath hand-painted ceilings, housed in either the Chini Pavilion or the main villa. Crisp color schemes are infused with bold splashes of red, sage, eggplant and ebony, and billowy fabrics frame canopied beds and windows. Bathrooms are cloaked in cool Italian marble and outfitted with large and inviting soaking tubs. Public spaces are equally striking with ultra modern embellishments.

Italy is known for its stunning gardens, and Villa Le Maschere is no exception. A sweeping staircase leads from the terrace down to sprawling park-like grounds, where a pair of swimming pools provide a refreshing escape on warm seasonal days. There is a delightful restaurant where elegant buffets are laid out for guests to enjoy a leisurely meal. The intimate bar is a place to retreat in the evening for an aperitif and conversation. Villa Le Maschere is near Lago di Bilancino as well as the small village of Barberino di Mugello. You can also spend the day in Florence scouring the many renowned museums, piazzas and public markets - or seek out a lush vineyard for an Italian-style picnic. For a revival of tradition with a contemporary twist, experience Villa Le Maschere.

Gorgeous grounds but lousy front desk manager, Fraceska. Rude and unprofessional. She made the stay a bummer. Food was ok. Will not go back to do front desk staff- not helpful. Had a problem in the spa and never did get resolved by the general manager. There is a reason they don't command more money per night.

This is a gorgeous place to spend a few days. It is a beautiful building in a glorious setting. The staff are very helpful and friendly. I will be returning. Perfect for a few days and to be combined with a few days in the city centre.

Villa Le Maschere exemplifies the grand Tuscan villa. It is located in beautiful surroundings in a lovely part of Tuscany. The accommodation is first class, our large room was well appointed and had great views over the swimming pool to the expansive garden. The original 15th century establishment was allowed to run down until major renovations in the 1990's transformed it to the 5 star venue it is today. It is probably now due for a minor make over as some wear and tear is starting to appear; no doubt it's popularity has contributed to this over the last quarter of a century. It still retains some of the original character with narrow passages keeping you on your toes when looking for some of the Villas facilities. Initially it was difficult to get on the internet; more a symptom of communications in Italy; a problem the staff quickly sorted out. The downstairs breakfast room looked out onto the garden and provided an excellent range of dishes, typically with a strong emphasis on "sweet" pastries and cakes. They did make a good cup of tea! The main dining room offered a very high standard of service, food and wine. Throughout the hotel the staff were very professional and friendly making the whole experience at Le Maschere most memorable. Spoil yourself!

We had the pleasure of staying in the beautiful Villa Le Maschere in Tuscany. This is an outstanding area of natural beauty in Italy.... a real jewel in the crown for the country. The hotel is magisterial.... a fusion of style and elegance that befits the Renaissance elegance and its 5 star rating . Built in the 17th century in classic Renaissance style. The standards of the hotel are very high: the food, service and ambience are all outstanding. The room we had, whilst quite basic, was spotlessly clean and well attended to.... staff were always attentive to our needs and asked us if we needed anything. Indeed, all the staff were trained to a high standard; unfailingly polite, attentive and efficient. Their standard of English was also very high ( A lot better than my Italian!). The outdoor swimming pool was excellent (if a little too cold) and my wife enjoyed the excellent spa facilities. In short, this hotel was magnificent and I would unreservedly recommend it to anyone who wants class, style and a certain Italian swagger!
