We are just back from a short holiday in Mauritius during which we stayed at So Sofitel Bel Ombre. The Resort as such is located in the southern coast of Mauritius and is a great place if you are looking for Peace and serenity amidst lush Greenery. We arrived late night and was extremely tired after a long flight . We were met by the buggy driver at the entrance who said we could check in to the room and the Check in staff would complete the formalities at the room which was indeed a blessing. Score 1 for So Sofitel. However, I have other qualms that bring down the rating for this Hotel. Only two restaurants and only one restaurant serves breakfast La Flamboyant which when you are staying for a week tends to be get a tad boring . We tried lunch at La Plage . Although by the beachside, we were swarmed by flies making it almost impossible to enjoy your meal. My 8 years old son wasn’t pleased and wanted to retire to the room. Dinner was at LA Flamoboyant which was decent enough and one night we were lucky to enjoy the Mahashivartri special cuisine and lovely dances at the Takamaka Bar . The staff at the restaurant were nice and courteous but we noticed that the staff worked rather long shifts and you could see they were really tired which also probably explains the poor room service both in terms of food and housekeeping. We had two days where the housekeeping just forgot to clean our rooms ….Annoying!Several calls layer , issues were sorted. Toiletries were not replaced as you would expect from 5 * hotels. This was quite a surprise as we had lovely experience with Sofitel in Dubai. Rooms---- The Lushary Rooms are spacious with a huge bathroom that comes with an outdoor rain shower .There is also an outdoor tub if you feel like soaking away your troubles. We had a room that was in the perfect location close to the Kids club , restaurant and spa . Kids club has a kids pool which was quite popular with the kids . The staff at the club were really nice and got the kids involved with activities . I still think the kids club needs an upgrade as compared to the ones we had seen elsewhere. The Spa offered free sauna , relaxation Lounge and a plunge hot tub .My Husband and I treated ourselves to massages that was sheer bliss. Something to keep in mind…there are different offers every day and we got lucky with a 30% off on one of the days. Beach and Pool--- The Pool was temperature controlled and was lovely but there were no life guards on duty which I strongly think is a definite NO NO for a hotel that calls itself a 5* . The cocktails and mocktails served at the pool side was refreshing and the pool itself was clean. Lots of lounge chairs and Beach beds . The beach was clearly my favourite place on the property.Although it was hot and humid , we enjoyed our time and walks at the beach. There are no convenience stores nearby so that’s something to keep in mind.  Overall we enjoyed our time there but it could have been a lot better !

So much I could say to make this a long winded review but I will keep it short. Beautiful resort kept in great condition, staff couldn’t do enough to make you feel like a VIP at all times, Giresh (bar) Quinsey (waiter) and Raj and Dinesh (Butler service) all stood out. A good selection of food was offered in both restaurants and the bar menu was fantastic too. Rooms are wonderful, large and clean and come with all the amenities you will need. 100% recommendation Thank you to all Sofitel So Mauritius staff

Service was the outstanding point for this tranquil place, couldn't be faulted! Nothing was too difficult. Food was varied. Great location with a beautiful reef at your fingertips! Suites were basic but very comfortable. Plenty of activities to keep every type of guest happy!

We travelled as a family of 3 including 1 elderly. We stayed in the Family Prestige Suite comprising 2 "sections" divided by a sliding door. The room is spacious and beautifully decorated. The cleaning staff did a wonderful job; they appear twice a day - once in the daytime and the second time in the evening to make up the spare bed (sofa turns into bed). During the evening turndown service, they leave chocolates dotted around the room which is a nice touch. While we were visiting it was Chinese New Year and the hotel placed a special emphasis on this; Chinese lucky red packets were placed in the room and there were other little thoughtful touches around the hotel to celebrate this festival. While here, we ate at the large buffet restaurant, pool restaurant and Ming Court. We were not disappointed with any them. Ming Court was particularly good. We did the half board option which covers breakfast (buffet) and dinner where you have a choice of 4 restaurants to choose from. The beach (which is actually public) is nice, although when we visited, there was some rain and so the shore wasn't as "pristine" as it might be (lots of seaweed and other bits of plant floating around) and the water was slightly choppy. The staff here are all courteous and friendly. There is a kids club and a shallow part of the pool, so this resort is clearly targeted towards families with children. A couple of things that would have improved my experience and therefore prompted me to give this hotel a better rating: 1. I woke up late one night to visit the ensuite bathroom and almost slipped over in a large puddle of water. When I switched on the light I could see that the ceiling of the bathroom had been leaking profusely. It was too late to call Reception so I just covered the large puddle with a bath towel and informed them the next day. They immediately sent a maintenance guy to fix it; apparently it's the air con that leaks. A tube was blocked and the guy unblocked it and drained the water. It seems clear from the markings in the ceiling that this is a recurring issue. I find it potentially hazardous, especially if the guests staying in that room are elderly or not particularly mobile; they could slip and injure themselves. Management needs to address this safety issue. 2. In the main restaurant where buffet breakfast is served, there is a lack of air conditioning. We visited in the summer, and the air was quite stifling. I have not experienced this in any other hotel of this standard. We looked around and there seemed to be a lack of air con machines and fans. I was surprised by this given the hotel is 5 star.

This holiday experience at So Sofitel was fantastic! The staff were so lovely. To name a few, Sendy who greeted us at reception and ensured everything went smoothly for us, Raj the concierge who checked everyday that we were good and the bar/ restaurant staff Praveen, who makes the best rum coffee, Giresh who always remembered what we liked to drink, but most of all a massive thank you to Yiannik. Yiannik looked after us at the poolside. I happened to ask why nobody was actually drinking the coconuts that were growing off the trees. Within minutes he turned up with two fresh coconuts, which he then offered to slice open once we had drunk the water. After that every morning he would greet us with the coconuts and even bottled some for us to take back for our journey to the airport. We had an amazing time here and what impressed me was that we were all inclusive so everything had already been paid for, however even after we had checked out we told to go and have a quick lunch to set us up for our flight onto Dubai. The rooms were lovely with a large outdoor bath and complementary bath salts. The drinks and cocktails were delicious as was the food. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
