About the Hotel

Located off the west coast of Scotland is a private 300-acre retreat called Isle of Eriska Hotel, Spa & Golf. Built as a home in 1884 in the Scottish Barional style, this singular hotel on the island houses just 50 guests and is steeped in history. While the building has had a succession of owners and enhancements over the course of its lifetime, it has changed very little with age. The rooms are capsules of luxury adorned with tasteful appointments and regal bursts of color. In the main house, a former billiard room and courtyard have transitioned into a pair of spacious bedrooms, while the addition of a conservatory has enhanced the overall ambiance. A nearby annex is surrounded by lush foliage and features spa suites as well as two-bedroom cottage suites offering some serious seclusion with private gardens and bubbling hot tubs.

Very disappointing experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

We went here with my daughter as a treat before her wedding , we had been before and really enjoyed it and the room we sat in was stunning with beautiful glass windows . To our disappointment when we got there we were directed away as there was refurbishment going on . In mind we booked this back in March and spoke a few days before we came to prepay everything . No one told us this , if they had we would booked our second choice . We then went to champagne afternoon teas . My daughter bride to be is coeliac. When we arrived we were told her cakes would be nothing like ours and wouldn’t be what you would normally get . So you can imagine our surprise when the only difference on her plate to ours , were 2 strawberries!! We asked and they said no they are ok , but after being told one thing them another , she went safe and didn’t eat any of them , tea was cold . This hotels have stunning views a conservatory. At first we were served in the reseption area , we asked to be moved and were out infront if the fire z, which was ok but no windows !! The service was very poor although they were polite . This experience cost us over £500 , what a joke

Excellent break.

We took advantage of a special offer and booked a lodge for 4 nights, but were delighted when we were upgraded to a Hilltop Reserve. From our photo you can see the magnificent views from the lodge over the loch to Lismore . The lodge itself consisted of a large well furnished lounge and bedroom with the most comfortable bed we have ever encountered. On arrival we were greeted by the manager, Callum, in a friendly and helpful manner. He also looked after us each breakfast time in a very efficient and cheerful manner. Moreover, we found the service at breakfast and dinner to be of a very high standard with all waiters helpful and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed the locally sourced food and found it to be of an excellent standard.Portions were not over large which suited us perfectly. We must admit that we were blessed with wonderful weather and were able to greatly enjoy our walks on both Eriska and Lismore. Overall, we considered it a perfect holiday. Our thanks to all the staff, especially Callum and the young waitress going to study Law at Stirling University in September. David and Liz Davenport.

The Perfect private island Escape

This property is Stunning and the staff could not be more brilliant. We spent 3 nights here and our only wish is that we could have stayed another 3. The building is refined, the finishings and amenities are of the highest order, the staff ultra professional and the food is to die for. Large indoor heated swimming pool to relax in and miles and miles of untouched beaches and island walks. I cannot recommend it more Highly and we will certainly be back!

Problems at Group Level

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

This is not a good review, but there were aspects of this stay that were positive. The staff were good. Some were in training, but it was good to hear the more senior staff explaining clearly what was expected of them, guiding and pointing out some of the less obvious things that a hotel of this standard should do. The food, too, was excellent. Three nights in the main restaurant provided a menu with an adequate choice for us to vary our meals each night. There is a problem with the senior management of the group, however. Making offers they cannot uphold, offering services that are unavailable, having major renovation work done while guests are there, and finally, being disrespectful to their own staff. This makes me wonder about the new ownership of the hotel. (I had a look at the recent reviews of other guests on this site- it's very telling that 5 star reviews get a nice reply note from the hotel. Below 5 stars, they don't seem to care very much- nada.) This was a stay on the west coast, in March- The criticism regarding water ingress does not relate the Scottish weather, but the hotel’s ability to cope with it. In order, here are our disappointments of our stay. 1- A ‘non-refundable/ non-transferable’ deal we accepted in September 23 was later cancelled by the hotel, who asked us to change our dates. I’m sure this one-way deal is in the small print this is allowed, but disappointing. 2- Our booking requested dinner bookings for each night- given the remoteness of the location, this is pretty well essential. This was not actioned and was corrected only when I made contact to challenge what seemed to be a discrepancy on the acknowledgement. 3- In February, we were told the deck restaurant, with it’s ‘incredible transformation’ won’t open until April. This was the first notice we had that it would be shut while we were there. 4- Five days before our arrival, we were told that the pool, sauna, and steam room of the spa hotel would be out of action throughout our stay. 5- Despite having paid nearly £700 for a non-refundable room, the hotel obviously has a problem with trust regarding their guest population. The hotel took a single pound from my credit card on arrival. 6- The weather on our first evening was pleasant. Our walk round the grounds was spoiled by the piles of building material, old fittings, and skips blocking the paths on the way to the Jetty. 7- Our first morning saw rain. This has been a wet year so far, so was surprised to discover water dripping from the roof of our sitting area. We may have been the first to experience it as explained by the manager, but given the recent storms, I would be surprised. At least they gave us wine buckets to catch the water rather than plastic ones. The roof was fixed that day because the builders were on site. (My wife’s spa massage was not charged for, by way of compensation) 8- Having arrived in a plug-in hybrid car, I tried to charge the vehicle at the hotel. This failed. The new chargers are apparently being delivered in the next few weeks. I was offered a ‘granny charger’ if needed. As I was able to use the petrol engine, I was fine, however someone with an electric car would have had a problem. 9- A minor incident happened at breakfast on our final morning. While eating, a senior member of the company (possibly HR or some other senior role) introduced two new members of staff who were going to be working tin the restaurant to ‘…the person I think is in charge of food and beverages’. He was able to gently correct her and say that he was the Restaurant Manager. This meant that 1- she showed she did not know (or particularly care) what his role was, undermining him on day one. 2- This was the new-start’s boss 3- She did this is a restaurant in front of the guests. This was unprofessional in any organisation, but unforgivable in hospitality. The restaurant manager remained extremely calm and made positive efforts to get to know the new employees, in a manner that was consistent with what had been seen throughout the hotel on other occasions. I haven't had to number my issues before, for any review. This is not good. The overall impression is of good staff trying to make the best of bad planning

Wonderful relaxing weekend break

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We went for a one night stay. The staff were friendly and accommodating and made sure that everything ran smoothly. The food and drinks were well up to standard and we also used the spa facilities where I had the best massage treatment I've ever had. The mood was always calming and relaxed and we came away feeling much the better for the trip. We do a lot of travelling around Scotland and we've seen both the good and the bad but we'd happily recommend Eriska to you.
