The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

Booked the Claremont for my husband's birthday. We checked in to find that our room was upgraded to the "tower suite". The views were amazing and we had our own private balcony. Shortly after we arrived the staff delivered a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries as a "Birthday Treat". We had cocktails at the bar, which were very tasty, and breakfast in the morning. Everything was great, beautiful room, great staff, we had a great time.

If the rest of our stay goes as well as our lovely greeting by Makiva at the front desk this might end up on my top hotels list. So far great location, views. Room is small but well appointed with beautiful view to the San Francisco Bay. Rain shower. Only complaint was noisy air unit.

I have stayed at the Claremont since before Fairmont took it over, and have been here four times since July. While I have always found it over-priced and over-rated, it was a lovely and relaxing location and the best option in the area so I went ahead and paid the premium. This time, however, I learned that a new company has acquired Fairmont and the property, amenities and quality have deteriorated even more dramatically. First, and probably of greatest impact, is the closing of the hotel restaurant. The Meritage had a great breakfast - full menu, properly prepared food and good service. It always seemed busy and there appeared to be a lot of locals meeting for drinks or meals. Now, the only place to eat other than the bar (limited menu), is the Limerock - which is a glorified diner. Two out of three days my breakfast arrived cold and tasteless. On the night we arrived there were no tables available for dinner so we had to shiver outside on the patio. A request for adding grilled chicken to my salad yielded a curt "no" (despite the fact this was available from room service - a true 4-star restaurant would have accommodated the request). Most of the staff are outstanding, but few will go the extra mile. You need to request a newspaper - the clerks don't offer one - and in some rooms you need to do the same for turndown service. The linens are of very low quality - think Courtyard Marriott - and bring slippers since none are provided and the carpets are totally gross. Unfortunately, there are limited choices for upper-end hotels in the area so I'll probably stay there again, but at least next time I'll know to lower my expectations. Fairmont should be ashamed.

I travel frequently for work. Over the years I have made wonderful connections everywhere I stay however at most hotels it one particular front desk manager or even the doorman. The folks at the Claremont take personal service to a completely different level - every team member is amazing! Every stay I am bowled over by the courtesy and warmth of the employees. During my recent stay I was warmly greeted by a maintenance staff member, two housekeepers and every member of the valet team. Jason -- the newest doorman -- was so warm and enthusiastic about joining the Fairmont team he made me want to apply for a job! Martin helped me navigate Uber when my phone GPS failed me and finally just sent me off in a car when the app wouldn't behave. I also can't say enough good things about Jeanne and Jennifer at the concierge desk who know Berkeley well and can answer any question I have about a good spot for a meeting or work dinner. I am suspicious that Frank (Francis Flynn) who is the front of house manager has no small part in making the Claremont such a stunningly welcoming place. He is the rock that keeps the team humming along and he is the reason I keep coming back. (Oh and the rooms and the amenities are excellent). I travel on a budget and am always delighted how often I can find affordable rates at this world class location

My husband and I stayed here for one night last month (which happened to be the night before I went into labor with our second child) and for one night five years ago when I was pregnant with our first. We chose the Claremont because even though we only live about 45 minutes away, it still gave us the feeling of a luxurious getaway. Both visits were wonderful but this review will focus on our latest visit since that's the easiest to remember. The hotel is beautiful, it was recently remodeled, I believe. The front desk staff was very helpful and when we were taken to our room by the bellhop we realized we'd forgotten to ask for a room with a big tub (a must for a woman 5 days from her due date!). When we mentioned this to the bellhop, he immediately called the desk and they gave us a new room assignment right away, no delay, no problems. The new room was even more beautiful and included a bathroom with HUGE bathtub and a separate shower. Oh, and view was gorgeous . . . we could see the Bay and the Bay Bridge from our room. Once we got settled, we went downstairs to the bar for a snack and drink before dinner. We ordered the charcuterie plate which was delicious, and I had a iced tea and my husband ordered a scotch. The service was very accommodating and friendly. We went to dinner but came back early enough to hang out and enjoy the room. The bed and linens are so comfortable and soft. We ordered late night room service, which was wonderful, a cheese plate and a creme brûlée. My only complaint is that the menu is a little confusing and it looks like you can order certain things that actually are not available late at night or that are required to be ordered well in advance, which I found odd. Regardless, what we were able to get was delicious. We had a very good night's sleep then I woke up in the morning and enjoyed the deep tub which filled faster than I expected since it was so big. The complimentary in room coffee enhanced my soak time in the tub. We also ordered room service for breakfast, french toast, egg benedict, everything was very good. We also requested and were granted a late checkout time, which was lovely. I wish I could remember the name of some of the people who waited on us while we were there but having gone into labor less than 24 hours after we left the Claremont, I'm lucky I remember anything at all! LOL Overall, it was a wonderful night away, a night of being pampered and waited on which is just what I needed at the time. We would definitely go back!
