The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

Stayed here for a quick staycation and loved everything about this property. Grounds are absolutely beautiful. Pool, tennis courts are absolutely great. Didn't feel like leaving property. We had some amazing food in both restaurants at a hotel. Great food. Can't wait to return!

We are visiting in the Oakland, California area. We had dinner last night at Claremont. For such a beautiful hotel and location. We had the worst meal ever. They don't even begin to offer 5 star food. I had shells in my oysters, my husband had under cooked chicken. My salad was supposed to have roasted vegetables instead they were boiled. We have visited California at least seven times. This by far had the worst food.

My wife and I took advantage of a Friday business meeting in Berkeley to spend two nights at this fabulous, beautifully restored hotel. The hotel is gorgeous inside and out; the public areas are very classy without being stuffy. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a suite with a fabulous view of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate, etc. And, even though we overlooked the tennis courts, the soundproofing was so effective that we never heard any noise from the courts. Our room was luxurious and comfortable. The Club has an excellent fitness facility, locker rooms with whirlpool, steamroom and sauna, and multiple outdoor pools (we had 80 degree days and the pools were overflowing with kids). We did not get a chance to eat in the restaurants but on our late arrival we had a late dinner in the lounge and the food was excellent. We took a rigorous hike to the top of the hill (trailhead an easy five minute walk from the hotel) behind the hotel, for some great views of the Bay Area. Service was friendly throughout the hotel. All in all, this is a 5 star resort experience; it is expensive, but you get what you pay for if the objective is to luxuriate in a very fine hotel environment.

Service, service, service. What you would expect from a Fairmont and more. This property is unique that it's 100+ years old and just magnificent. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The lobby, the restaurants, and the spa/pool area were all exceptional and kid friendly.
