The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

My husband and I stayed here for one night last month (which happened to be the night before I went into labor with our second child) and for one night five years ago when I was pregnant with our first. We chose the Claremont because even though we only live about 45 minutes away, it still gave us the feeling of a luxurious getaway. Both visits were wonderful but this review will focus on our latest visit since that's the easiest to remember. The hotel is beautiful, it was recently remodeled, I believe. The front desk staff was very helpful and when we were taken to our room by the bellhop we realized we'd forgotten to ask for a room with a big tub (a must for a woman 5 days from her due date!). When we mentioned this to the bellhop, he immediately called the desk and they gave us a new room assignment right away, no delay, no problems. The new room was even more beautiful and included a bathroom with HUGE bathtub and a separate shower. Oh, and view was gorgeous . . . we could see the Bay and the Bay Bridge from our room. Once we got settled, we went downstairs to the bar for a snack and drink before dinner. We ordered the charcuterie plate which was delicious, and I had a iced tea and my husband ordered a scotch. The service was very accommodating and friendly. We went to dinner but came back early enough to hang out and enjoy the room. The bed and linens are so comfortable and soft. We ordered late night room service, which was wonderful, a cheese plate and a creme brûlée. My only complaint is that the menu is a little confusing and it looks like you can order certain things that actually are not available late at night or that are required to be ordered well in advance, which I found odd. Regardless, what we were able to get was delicious. We had a very good night's sleep then I woke up in the morning and enjoyed the deep tub which filled faster than I expected since it was so big. The complimentary in room coffee enhanced my soak time in the tub. We also ordered room service for breakfast, french toast, egg benedict, everything was very good. We also requested and were granted a late checkout time, which was lovely. I wish I could remember the name of some of the people who waited on us while we were there but having gone into labor less than 24 hours after we left the Claremont, I'm lucky I remember anything at all! LOL Overall, it was a wonderful night away, a night of being pampered and waited on which is just what I needed at the time. We would definitely go back!

We stayed here for a family visit and it became a comfortable, relaxing oasis. Our room was comfortable and the two restaurants we used seved a delicious menu. The food counter where you can grab a coffee and criossant is a great addition. The Hillary Tenzing Room is a wonderful tribute to those explorers and is a fantastic place to have a drink and review the day's adventures. And the staff is superb at everything they do. They really pay attention to you and what they are doing. The hotel is also a nice walk to several good restaurants, some shopping and a movie theatre.

Had a fantastic experience staying at the Hotel. We had a suite overlooking the bay and could watch the sun set behind San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. I spent a lot of time in the gym and pool areas while my wife found the spa to be one of the best she has visited. The location of the hotel enable us to visit Oakland and the surrounding areas without spending a lot of time driving. I would highly recommend the hotel for anyone who would is in the Oakland area for business or pleasure.

As you arrive you can’t miss the Historic Hotel nestled in the Berkeley Hills, this majestic property doesn’t disappoint, the updated Lobby with the beautiful decor along with the amazing views will make you feel right at home. The restaurant Limewood is a great place to have a delicious lunch or dinner, the amazing city views make it the ideal place to enjoy a cocktail and appetizer, The relaxing design and professional staff will make you want to have one more drink while you watch the sun sink into San Francisco Bay. The real gem of this property is the Club, with knowledgeable trainers and state of the art training systems you can slide into your workout routine and then go soak in the Salt Water Hot Tubs or do a couple laps in the Salt Water pool. The professional staff at the Club will answer any questions and made our time there memorable. I would recommend The Claremont Club and Spa to anyone visiting Nor Cal we truly enjoy our time there.
