The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

A wonderful hotel that I shall revist when I have a chance. It has a lovely location and ideal to stroll around Berkley village.Rooms are very good and gives a wonderful view over San Francisco Bay. They have a first class resteuarant and a nice bar. This is value for money and I recommend this hotel, even if is a little pricy.

Stayed here only for 1 night, it's a pretty old property but looks to be well maintained and rooms and common areas are updated to elegant modern style. Did not have time to check out the spa, but looks lovely (and pricey!). Staffs were helpful and friendly.

Luxury comes at a price, but it's well worth it. Nestled into the hillside with stunning views of the Bay, this hotel is beautifully redecorated. It is amassed with well appointed amenities, and the staff was very accommodating. This hotel gives you all the style and elegance one could expect from a luxury hotel. I can honestly say this hotel is in my opinion the grand dame of Berkeley!

We have stayed in many first class hotels in the US and Europe and we were looking forward to staying at this alleged five star property while visiting family. The public spaces are really spectacular, but they belie the lack of good customer service that lurks within. The valets were friendly and directed us to the front desk. We were told that our request for an upgrade was successful and for a modest additional charge we had a suite in the spa wing. Little did we know that getting to the room required two elevators and two long hallways. The room was very nice, although housekeeping was a little spotty. We left for the afternoon and upon returning found that our upgraded suite did not include turn down service or bottled water. After apologies, we were assured that it could be expected the following night. We went to one of the bars for a night cap. My Tito's rocks tasted like tequila because it was poured into a jigger that had not been properly rinsed. Next morning: room "service". Service was awful. The food and beverages were left on the cart, not placed on the dining table as requested. Coffee was not poured, no butter for the cold toast and he forgot the ice water we requested. Tip added to the check: 22%. Two trips later, he got it right. Next night: trekked to the room. No turndown. Really annoyed. The staff person on the phone was super apologetic. Went for cocktails while waiting for housekeeping. Drinks were better. Next morning: room "service". He brought the teapot but forgot the tea and sugar. Really! Left for the day. The valets are very nice. No one else on the staff makes eye contact with guests. Third night: you guessed it, no turn down, no water. This is a Fairmount Hotel! You would never know it!! Did speak with a manager. She was very apologetic, and offered to refund my resort fee (we didn't use the "resort") and parking. I accepted. Left early the next morning for SFO. No time for room "service." Sadly we will not be returning to the property any time soon.

Everything was great, would highly recommend the Claremont. The highlight was the staff, everyone was incredibly friendly - I think more friendly than any hotel I've ever stayed at. Facilities were classy and now over done, with nice sized rooms. Very nice having such a large sports club attached, I went to the gym multiple times and sat by the pool. Great view as well from the hotel, and can walk easily to Berkeley.
