The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

I am a regular visitor to UC Berkeley. I am not sure what is happening with Berkeley accommodations, but the hotel choices are so limited, and the rooms are so overpriced for what they offer (and in some hotels just plane out right dirty, dirty, dirty), that it is insane to try to stay there during a UC Berkeley event, or even on a "normal day". Claremont is by far the best choice in town, but still not quite up there in service and looks to justify the price. I'd stay there more often if the rates were more reasonable. Instead, I often opt for the Hyatt Place in Emeryville. According to some other reviews it used to be even worse! Wow! If you are a real estate developer, build a few higher-end hotels there, keep them clean and well-serviced, and you will be booked up all the time!

I loved staying at this property. I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff and the location. There are several choices in restaurants and plenty of fun activities between Tennis, exercise classes and spa services. The outdoor pool area is large and well maintained. There is also a cafe conveniently located near the pools/gym/jacuzzi which makes having lunch, coffee or snacks really easy and pleasant. Nice staff here as well. This is a well maintained and lovely spot for travelers to Berkeley and environs. They also have a canine ambassador in the lobby which is a friendly touch. I would definitely go back. Breakfasts are large and the kitchen accommodated my very healthy request(s) every day. Drinks in the lobby bar were great and the "nibbles" delicious and good sized. We did not have any dinners on site as we were out with friends who live in the area. Parking is available on site for a fee and it's easy to come and go through gates. Valet parking available as well and the guys couldn't be nicer! "Summer" did a fantastic manicure and pedicure for me. I also had a massage which included the use of bamboo sticks (heated). Not sure if it's for me, but I wanted to try it out. Spa facility is clean and well run. Friendly and helpful staff. It can get busy, but remains calm, which is important. I took two spinning classes, both good and also a total body bosu ball class, which was not for the faint of heart. . . but I love an athletic challenge. Got some great workouts in and loved it! As a hotel guest I could use the athletic facilities free of charge and didn't pay extra for classes, so that was a nice perk. There is an extensive schedule of classes, so something for every level of fitness.

This was my first stay at the Claremont- I loved it! My sister and I stayed for a girls getaway, it was perfect. The food in both restaurants was consistently excellent! The spa and the fitness center were both good. Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious... and we had a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. I love this hotel, the sitting spaces are just beautiful and comfortable. The staff was always kind and friendly. We will definitely be returning. I highly recommend this hotel.

For 15 years I visited the club at the Claremont almost daily to work out. Oh I miss that place. In addition, I sent friends to stay and I've hosted major events at the hotel . I moved away from the East Bay two years ago. I just completed the most delightful two nights as a guest at the Claremont. Boy have things changed for the better under the new owners - the Fairmont. The renovations are gorgeous. The service is first rate. Every single person I encountered was pleasant and helpful. The hotel had changed hands for years. It was tired and the mood was kind of a downer. But no more. I rarely go out of my way to personally compliment management, in this case I did. In particular, I had a wonderful evening reminiscing with a dear friend at the bar of the LimeWood. Bartender Manny steered us to the perfect red wine and appetizers to match. Another night I enjoyed a nightcap at the Merritage with the delightful Van Dyke manning the bar. Jeanne the concierge could not have been more helpful and friendly. I wish I could remember more names. But you can not go wrong here. Additional favorites about the Claremont: - the hotel dog Edie. Yes, edie hangs out on her bed in the lobby. She is beautifully trained to enjoy the attention of children and dog lovers who miss their own pooches. But she will not approach, which is great for people who don't love dogs. (Which is hard to Imagine) -,Clean fresh comfortable high quality linens. Comfortable beds. Beautiful bathroom. - The athletic facilities are worth the stay. Two lap pools. One is warm and one is colder for serious swimmers. Loads of fun classes from kick boxing to yoga to spin and more. Hot tub. Sauna. Much more... - location!!! The weather is better in the east bay. You can walk out the back of the hotel for an excellent and serious hike up to the beautiful wild Tilden park with miles of wooded trails. - location- easy walk to Peet's coffee and world class French bakery. Or east bay favorite comfort food at Rick and Anne's - location - a bit longer walk and you are on college ave in the elmwood Berkeley neighborhood. Many reasonably priced dining options including Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean, and more. Nice shopping options and a movie theater. I can't wait to come back to the Claremont! Good job team Fairmont!!!

The hotel is grand and has lots to offer. I liked the location, the views, the appearance of the property inside and out, and the service. The hotel gives the impression of a very high class of service. I was a little surprised that, for example, that it didn't have an evening turn-down, but the price is in line with what the hotel offers. It's nice to have a view of the SF bay on a clear day -- I understand that not all of the rooms have such a great view. Climate control in the room was very good and simple. Housekeeping was great. Breakfast was good, although the espresso is expensive, especially if you enjoy more than one.
